Great players dont make great coachesĀ

Agree, if you mean great players don't alwaysĀ make great coaches. Some great players have been outstanding coaches, such as Ron Barassi and Leigh Matthews.

Just out of curiosity, I've looked at other coaching records to see how Neeld compares. It is interesting that of all coaches to have coached 33 or more games (33 being the number coached by Neeld), four have a worse record, measured as percentage of games won. More interestingly, three of them were unquestionably great players - Royce Hart, Brian Dixon and Kevin Murray. The fourth is Allan Hird Senior.Ā

The view was the Dixon was a poor coach.

However, a past North player who played under him, had aĀ  lot of respect for him, and toldĀ meĀ that the main legacy of Dixon'sĀ time was that he brought a professional approach to training and preparation and that this period laid a foundation stone for Barassi and Norths success. He said that prior to Dixon's time, the players were unfit and poorly prepared. The players did not love him but respected him because he was a past great and member of one of the most successful teams in the history of the VFL. The ex-player commented that the aura of Dixon's and MFC success had a profound impact on the players and administration.Ā

North subsequently acquired three ex-captains of their respective clubs (Davis, Rantall, Wade) under the 10 rule and together with Kekovitch and a group of talented young players they went on an upward trajectory. .

Would Tom Gillies go down as the only player in recent memoryĀ to play for the MFC and not lay a single tackle?Ā

Minimum requirement is two games if anyone goes searching.Ā

He's in the negative for laying zero tackles but giving away one goal from throwing an opponent into the fence.

Ā

Apparently he tells people that the throw was a ā€˜technical tackle’
