Wagner doesn't seem to have any particular strengths - he isn't fast, he's not strong overhead, he's not a brilliant decision maker, he is only average one on one and his disposals skills are a work in progress - but he may develop into a solid and reliable backman given time. I hope so because its a critical role.

 

 

Well commented. There's hope he'll become good enough to be a regular as with many. One of my concerns is over playing developing players in the first team. When we have Pederson, Hannan, Brayshaw (back this week) and Tmac not playing. So when I see Wagner on, i'm frustrated.

Aside from noticeable skills improvements and reading the play more intuitively, Wags has become a far better team man, hitting up targets and feeding teammates with regularity. Who'd have thought a player who just ticked over his 25th game and getting some continuity of footy after a full preseason is finding his feet. Not everyone needs to be or can be a superstar. If anything the great teams all have their role players who no one quite gets how they keep knocking up games but it keeps happening. Usually their best attribute is discipline. They do exactly as asked, get the most out of themselves, have a small variable between their best and worst and sacrifice their individual game for the greater balance of the team. I suspect Wagner is that type of player. He may get overtaken in our back half to change dynamic or if we continue to improve and have low injury rate. I also think there is just as much chance of his ongoing improvement and seeing him there at the end of season is also not unexpected.

I am not often moved to comment on this site but this contribution of your’s big red fire engine(had to type your name in full because auto spell insisted you were Brie), but I think you have perfectly described the dynamics of both footballer and football team. Very well written.

Seems to totally lack any aggression or physical edge to his game.  Reminds me very much of Col Garland.  ATM he is a back up player & not in my best 22 but still handy to have.

Would love to see him develop a bit of "mongrel'.

As i noted before round 1 he is every chance of cementing his spot and if he does (which he almost has) his confidence will grow and we will see a big improvement in his kicking. I think his kicking will become a real weapon.

So taking your standard of measure binman: if a player is regularly selected by the coaching staff, he is a good player. It's just the "fans don't see how good they are"?

Your thoughts on recent players Rohan Bail, Matt Jones, Jordie McKenzie, Daniel Nicholson and Jack Grimes? These players immediately come to mind as being regularly selected by the coaching staff for years prior to their delisting. They were each creditable players worthy of a list, but were they "good players". 

Let's be straight here, Wags is a good depth player. We need all our depth players. Let's not talk them up to be higher than their station and skills deserve.  Where MFC is at, we need the Wags and the Billy's to be firing and ready to go, if our best 22-24 suffer injury and that is their role.

Playing AFL games is good for all in the top 23- 30 mark to ensure they all know the standard being demanded at AFL level and possibly lift them into the Top 20. It makes them better players and us a better club.

 

whatever happens from here - I'll always love him for his tackle on Selwood in the 3rd in round 1  - and the pain and anguish displayed.
