A Day at the Races

Hang on a minute Wadda

For a start Oliver gave the horse a near perfect run.  Sat just behind the leader on the fence and then got the dream run on the inside.  The horse never left the rails.

But then the horse didn't go ... it was later reported that the horse has a hot spot in it's foreleg.  If serious the horse may well be retired.

So how on earth can that possibly be the jockeys fault?  I get it,  you did your money but that's no reason to blame the jockey.

We've had this discussion before anyway ... you need to factor in that jockeys aren't perfect and that sometimes your horse gets an imperfect run in any given race.  That's racing.

Besides all that,  2 young female jockeys just lost their lives and their families and friends are grieving.  So there's a time and a place.

I knew there was something wrong with the horse as soon as it didn't have that kick.  I didn't need confirmation.  I did my money too so you're not alone.

Go back and have another look at the race Wadda.  I understand that you may be hearing about the possible injury to the horse for the first time so thus the cross wires.

Not what i was saying at all Macca.

I was just commenting on the photo and having a bit of a laugh.

The people in the picture ie owners are the ones that did their money, not me. They are obviously asking for an explanation from Oliver for which they are obviously not liking what they are hearing. Has got absolutely nothing to do with other jockeys being killed? think thats a bit of a long bow mate. Cheers.

Sorry mate ... I was jumping at shadows.  I thought you were having a go at the jockey.  I misunderstood the joke.  Apologies.

When it got the inside lane I thought the horse was home.  Wouldn't surprise me if they retire Vega Magic.  It's a 7 year old and a Group 1 sprinter that's won nearly $4Million.

It's done enough and it looked quite incapacitated in the straight.  It should be noted that the horse only had 1 run.in the Autumn and was beaten 20 lengths at that only start.

There is something wrong with the horse and I believe it's health & well being related.

Its ok mate, its Sunday!

Ill tell you a funny story about Mr Oliver and how i actually saved his butt once. I was co- managing a Sports club back in the early 2000s in Melbourne and Damien was at the bar and was refused service by one of our staff because he didnt have ID. Well hed just won the Melbourne Cup 3 days before on Media Puzzle the one where he saluted the heavens after his brother had died. The entire bar and most of the population of greater Melbourne knew who he was except our staff member who obviously didnt follow the races. The look on Olivers face when the staff member asked if he was 18 was priceless. I quickly stepped in and suggested to our staff member if he would like any more shifts that week, hed better give the young star a beer on the house!

A nicer guy than Damien you would not meet. You wont hear me ever saying a bad word about him.

It is fair to say that Oliver is better than most at his trade.  For instance,  he gave Alizee every chance but the horse just didn't quite have that finishing speed we've seen before.

But he rode the horse a treat all things considered.  Had every chance.  Same for Vega ... and he was smart enough to ease the horse up when the horse didn't respond in the straight.

It's hard to fathom losing your life as a jockey.  The families of the 2 young female jockeys must be besides themselves with grief. It really is an extreme sport in a lot of ways.  A very sad weekend for racing.

Vega Magic out for the Spring

They can't figure out what is wrong with the horse but the horse is being sent home to Perth and might run in the Winterbottom in the Summer (at Ascot)

My best Exhilarates mv race 5 no 1

A really top days racing. I think lots of favs will get up at the valley and randwick.

The Concorde is a ripper. Is nature strip too short? Quick but I think I'll trust the handicap and go with redzel, even though it hasn't won for a while.

Best value: kenedna (a horse i can never seem to snag. I hope that changes to today)

Best roughie: a the between ashlor and mister sea wolf.

Good punting fellas

Redzel is back hey?

Nature Strip just can't be trusted but Waller is training the horse for 1200m.

It will probably win its next start and the odds will be better.

Audio only for me today!

I h as he listening to dees games on the radio. Don't mind races at tall though. I can visualise the race and have listened to so many races that it feels more natural somehow.

Good day to trust form. Snagged dreamforce and fatinaah for handicap, track and first up form reasons. I like tbat.

I won early and late ... various types of wins too.  Got a double at Morphettville thanks to JJ. I had Dreamforce & Faatinah in exactas and Gator got me a couple of winners as well.

Looking forward to watching all the replays and the review shows tomorrow morning ... the Sky app & Racing.com apps both allow one to watch their racing shows either live or on replay.

Best Bet Strike Rate

16: 3 - 3 - 3

Australian Group Racing Calendar

Out of the wash-up from yesterday there were some impressive Stakes winners in 'Dreamforce',  'The Inevitable',  & 'Ehhilarates' whilst 'Libertini' found a way to win.  All are black-bookers in my opinion.

And here are the replays of the other 4 feature races from yesterday.  'Avilius' lacked that finishing burst,  'Nature Strip' over raced,  Eduardo had every chance,  'Homesman' very impressive & 'Surprise Baby' raced well first up.  They all get another chance.

Great day's racing this Saturday.

One of my favorites days on the calendar. Group racing in both NSW and Vic and good horses prepossessing to their grand finals in both states.

Mystic journey is the real deal, but i can't quite bring myself to back it. An insight into my punting psyche is that the reason is that on prelim final day last year i flew to Perth and when doing my form on the plane i though to myself Mystic Journey is surely the vibe bet.

Logic won out and i picked something much shorter. But the vibe was the go as Mystic Journey won at very long odds.

And has cost me money since! For example in that new ballot race in the Autumn where i convinced myself he would get rolled.

Annoying the winning post comes on Fridays (it used to be Thursday) so i can't do my form until tonight and tomorrow morning (i'm a creature of habit and always use the WP).

Will post my best as early as possible tomorrow morning.

So annoyed i went with kenedna last week. I only marked three in that race, Homesman being one - a horse that i have backed in all its previous wins. Went with the fear of missing out on Kenedna again (Santa Anna Lane is another of my bogey horses). Never looked like it and as i have posted I  love leaders and Homesmen won out front like a good thing.

Lets hope Homesman and Mystic Journey square of in the Cox Plate. Winx was great but not much fun for betting

Ok, fair enough creature of habit is fine, but if it comes out tonight? Could you put your pick in tonight? Its just that people are often busy Sat morning.....its only 1 pick.

Feel free to post anything else at any time day or night!

I only know my best for the day one I've done full form for Vic and new and assessed prices and determined who I will ultimately select.

But i can give a less researched best easily enough and will put one up tonight.

Thanks Bin, much appreciated. I will put it with our group best on the thread. Cheers.

Put up anything else you like tomorrow as well. Always interested.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
