While I think of it,  here's the line up for the Perth Cup next Monday (Jan 1) ...

Racenet.com.au Race 8 Ascot (Perth Cup)

16 runners so it isn't a small field ... Pounamu,  Material Man,  Trap For Fools,  Royal Star,  Dark Alert & Zarantz have all accepted and because of the extra distance & handicap conditions,  the race could well be fought out by the aforementioned horses and a few others.

And I'll be looking out for the Zephyr race at Sandown on Saturday too! (if it runs)

By the way,  Racenet.com.au is a more than decent website for form & odds (Thoroughbreds only by the looks of it) The site provides a few interesting links and the race fields,  form & odds are up a number of days in advance.

Thanks Macca, Dan is running on Saturday.

https://www.racenet.com.au/racing-form-guide/sandown-20171230/ladbrokes-info-hub-handicap-race-6

Michael Dee to ride, he's had success on the horse previously and comes in at 54kg. Juicy odds at the moment.

3 wins from 7 rides by Michael Dee according to racenet.  Of course the 'Dee' in the jockeys name doesn't go unnoticed either!

Quite a good open betting race too - Tri & F4 dividends could be healthy.  I'll be including the Zephyr in my multiples D77.

Spot on Macca,  the "Dee" rode him to 3 wins in a row in the early part of 2016. The horse was red hot back then.

Lets see if he can recapture some of that form on Saturday. I'll also be concentrating on the multiples for that race. He will add some value if he lands in the first 4.

Yep ... that's the idea!

There's a meeting at Doomben on Saturday which has a few feature races on show as well - including the listed Bernborough Handicap - 1600m $300.000

There's also a couple of Group 3 events for the 2yo's & 3yo's on the card - both races are lead-ins to the mid January Magic Millions meeting on the Gold Coast.

I might leave the latter 2 races alone but the Bernborough Hcp has a half-decent field ... I like the 1600m races too.  The formline is a bit easier for me to read in the middle distance races - I like to compare times & weights over the distance (more so 1400m - 2000m)

Whats the inside scoop from trackside at lakeside D77? It certainly is a good betting race, 6 dollars the field. I notice Robert Hickmont has a horse in as well. Its the first time ive ever seen one of his in a 1400m race. Maybe hes got some more license as a trainer since he left the Lloyd Williams camp.....I will certainly put him in a few multiples...

Waiting for the latest as we speak, I know connections are happy to have the "Dee" on board.

As far I know they will push forward again but unsure if they will lead with him at this stage.

Hopefully I have some news soon.

2 scratchings so we have a field of 9 Wadda.  However,  the multiple dividends can still pay well with the right combo.

A number of horses can win whilst all of the runners are genuinely capable of running a place or in the first 4.  I do like Ozi Choice to win though.  Thelberg is another to watch out for ... ran 2nd to Ozi's Choice last start and will only carry 51kg again.

Spot on as usual Macca.....im off to the TAB. Actually England are 6/1....if they can get Smith out soon its game on there as well.

Agree with you Macca, I've also come up with Ozi Choice and Thelburg as my top 2. After the claims they both meet Dan better at the weights again.

An interesting runner according to the market is Lite'n In My Veins. Former WA horse and didn't really flatter in two spring runs but he was contesting group and listed races over in the West.

The topweight has claims as well given it's great record but meets this lot with a big discrepancy in the weights.  The race being only 1400m helps 'Burning Front' though

But we need the Zephyr to feature D77 ... Go the Dan!

Belated update, the Zephyr is in good order, track is playing evenly. Hoping for 1 out 1 back sit during the run and a long overdue win.

Drawing against England is like a win given the circumstances ... and it looks like we're going to get out of this match with a draw

Losing anytime to England is like the Demons losing anytime to the Pies,  Dons,  Tiges,  Blues,  Hawks etc etc etc!

Not long to race time ... let's hope we all get a collect!

He looks relaxed going into the barriers....

No good again, disappointing run in the end. The winner just played with them.

Winner had no weight, listening to Weir just before the race, he was very confident. The Zeph just looks like he needs a rest, more or less the 6th run of the campaign time to hit the paddock for a well earned rest. The 3rd placegetter 6 duck eggs before this run, just shows its a matter of finding the right track and race

The winner looks a decent horse ... running good times too.  The horse looks like it now knows how to win after being in contention for a lot of it's runs.

Bad luck for the Zephyr .. never really in it but the horse has had a lot of runs of late.

Had the winner but didn't have the 2nd or 3rd horse ... ah well,  it's on to the Bernborough Hcp Doomben 5.40pm

Yeah, it's been a decent prep. I think his best is behind him but we shall see where they go from here with him.

A winless year for the Zephyr, now we move on to Doomben for the rest of the day.

.....um thats a list of Australian Cricket Captains, not sure who the winner would be but the top weight could use a few more runs.....hehe

....and actually, just reading through it, thats quite an amazing list. Looking at you can see what happened when WSC came to be.....BoB Simpson coming back after 10 years, the sheer number of matches the later captains AB and Greg Chappel and Ricky Ponting played. Quite amazing.

Vale the Zephyr for 2017 ... may he come back and sweep all before him in 2018.

In the "old" days there would perhaps be talk of putting him over the jumps but alas no longer

Ha ha ha!

That's probably a more interesting link Wadda ... sent the link out to a mate who follows cricket fairly closely.  It is a good extensive list in that it breaks up the captaincy records series by series.

Here's the proper link (fingers crossed) ... Bernborough Hcp Doomben 5.40pm

For what it's worth my top 3 picks are the 2,  3 & 6

Terrific finish to the Cup Macca, couldn't be any closer. Once again your selections filled the places.

Pounamu can certainly chase hard.

Pounamu was a good thing beaten wasn't it?  Definitely worth following if it comes over to the East - looks a Flemington horse the way it powers home.  It's a 6 year old but it's found it's true form.

I got a percentage of the Tri as I changed my mind on Material Man - took it to win as well as Pounamu & Trap For Fools instead of Royal Star to win.

But it was a grandstand finish and a fairytale ending for the family involvement of Material Man.  A great story.

Yes it was, got stuck behind some traffic, hemmed in at stages and when a run presented, it finished off like a train and missed by centimetres.

I thought the trifecta paid ok considering 2 favourites filled the top 2 spots. If they bring Pounamu here I will be jumping on the bandwagon.

Always a great story when there's a family involvement and Ms L Warwicks' post race interview was a good one too.

‘’I was out in front a long time by myself – it’s a massive straight.’’

She said things were ‘real quiet’ but she kept telling herself that ‘no, he’s coming’.

Ha ha!  Again,  just a great story D77.  As much as it's a gambling sport, the stories that surround the winning & the losing of these major races is very real for the participants.

I really do like seeing people achieve their lifelong ambitions.  It's part of what attracts me to these group races ... they are quite literally life-changers.

Anyway,  we've got the Magic Millions coming up on the 13th of Jan but I may have a nibble at Japan & HK next weekend (there's 3 or 4 Group 3's on show - all with very healthy prize-pools)

And for those who haven't seen the Perth Cup,  here it is as well as the interviews afterwards et al ...

  • NON-MFC: Round 09

Round 9 kicks off out west with the Dockers hosting a Collingwood side resting several stars. Fremantle need to make a statement on their home deck after some disappointing form on the road, while the Magpies will be keen to maintain their Top 2 position. Friday night sees a must-win clash between two sides desperate to stay in touch with the eight. St Kilda have shown glimpses while Carlton are clinging to relevance after a flat start to the season. Saturday’s twilight game at Marvel pits the Bombers against a struggling Sydney outfit. Essendon can’t afford another close match against a lower-ranked side, while the Swans risk sliding down the ladder even further. Up in Darwin, the fourth-placed Suns will look to extend their stay in the top four. The Bulldogs have hit their stride with three big wins on the trot and will be very keen to consolidate on their momentum. The always fiery Showdown looms as pivotal for both clubs. Adelaide are eyeing a spot in the Top 4 with a win, while Port Adelaide’s season could slip away if they drop another game and fall further behind the pack. Sunday begins with a yawn fest between Richmond and West Coast. The Tigers need to bank the points to stay clear of the bottom two, while the Eagles are still chasing their first win of the year. The Giants face one of the league’s toughest road trips as they travel to GMHBA Stadium to face the Cats. With GWS at risk of a third straight loss, Geelong will be eager to consolidate their position inside the eight and start their climb up the ladder. The round wraps up with the top-of-the-table Lions heading to Ninja Stadium to take on the second-last Roos. The Lions should easily take care of the struggling Roos who might be powerless against the best in the comp. Who are you tipping and what are the best results for the Demons?

  • PREVIEW: Hawthorn

Melbourne and Hawthorn who face off against each other this week have more in common than having once almost merged and about to wear a blue jumper with a red v triangle and an embroidered picture of a bird on the front. They also share the MCG as their main home ground, their supporters are associated with the leafy suburbs of Melbourne and in recent times, James Frawley graced the colours of both teams. Even more recently, both have bounced back from disastrous five game losing streaks to start off a season. Of course, the Hawks turned their bounce into a successful leap from the bottom of the ladder into a finals appearance, making it to the semifinals in 2024 and this year, they’re riding high in third place on the AFL table. The Demons are just three games into their 2025 bounce back, and are yet to climb their way out of the bottom four although they are sitting a game and percentage out of the top eight. However, with the current sportsbet odds of $3.90 to win this week’s encounter, it seems a forlorn hope that their upward progression will continue much longer.

  • REPORT: West Coast

On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.
