In the Oliver article on the MFC website this little gem was thrown in...

The AFL is cracking down further on dangerous tackles this season, with umpires and the MRP instructed to apply a stricter adjudication and interpretation of tackles made with a lifting, slinging or rotating technique ( emphasis is mine)

How about the AFL publish on the website what "stricter adjudication and interpretation of tackles" actually means before we start watching competitive games !

Many were rightly complaining that Oliver was fined for a tackle that he should not have been fined for. I believe that the laws have actually changed and ANY slinging action will land you in trouble whether arms are pinned or not, or whether or not there are two motions.

afl don't change the laws of the game,nut, just the interpretation - lol

just wait, during the season it will be re-interpreted a number of times. those caught during a redacted time will of course get no redress later

you are right ...but it does appear that they have changed the interpretation and I would suspect the clubs would know or the MFC should have challenged the Oliver decision.

theyll have a crack down for 6-7 rounds and then relax the interpretation and then at some unknown point later in the season will go hard again and wonder why players are confused

what a joke the AFL and umpires are.  its the one thing i dont miss about footy - pulling my hair out at the inconsistent, rubbish umpiring.  Umpires should have to have played the game for 5+ years in my opinion.  its too fast and complex a game to read about in books

They unfairly invented this rule midway through 2015 after being told to crack down on dangerous tackles. Umpires shouldn't be calling something dangerous. They should be looking at whether there's a push or contact to the head/throat, that's it. Tackling is meant to be dangerous rather than basically a hug in a pack causing stoppage after stoppage. The ridiculous thing is how easily it can go one way or another. A player can lay a ripping tackle where the player drops it but just because he gets slung at the last second it can go the other way!! Disgraceful. I don't want to see Oliver second guess himself

Total BS. The only time it should come under question is when both arms are pinned and head damage occurs (i.e Darren Milburn on a Richmond player a few years back).

Absolutely nothing wrong with the Oliver tackle and it's totally ridiculous he was fined for it.

Tackling is tackling, re-educating players to considerately hug the opposition instead shouldn't be the future.
