I heard Cordner explain what happened to him in his last couple of seasons at the Dees. It was a shocker. He went over on his ankle and the Club Doc diagnosed it as a bad sprain. He came back after some recovery time and he would start alright but as soon as he warmed up it would be agony. He fought it for nearly two seasons then went to a specialist who discovered he'd actually torn the tendons off the bone. Because it had been misdiagnosed it was too late to operate on and it basically destroyed the rest of his career.

Wish i had kept all those 70's Footy Records....

I was a teenager and had high hopes for Glen Swan.

He was a tall forward with a monster kick. He was a good mark and his kicks were long and high, most likely flat punts and torps (not many drop punts in those days).

One day at Waverley against Essendon he took a mark between wing and half forward about 70 meters out. I announced to those around me that he would kick it and some Essendon supporters laughed. It went through easily. A few minutes later he marked in the same position but missed.

I may be wrong but my recollection is that he was close to Sheffield Shield selection and gave up footy. I think a back injury also had something to do with it.

Whether it be Seddon, Reynolds, Cordner, Tilbrook, or Swan, it's amazing how few lived up to expectations. Then we get a player like Warren Dean, who was tall, agile and could kick it a mile, only do succumb to injury.

The truth is that Tilbrook couldn't cut it in the big league. He was a star in Shitholaide. Unfortunately that was a country league compared to the VFL in those days.

We can now mark the stats on the team sheet 40 odd years on, in terms of goals scored for the respective clubs off the field. I'm talking father/sons - there were 3 for each side out of this game who had sons who played.

Melbourne: Chris Sullivan (27 games), Darren Bourke (St Kilda, 0 games for us), Michael Clark (1 game).

Geelong: David Clarke, Tom Hawkins, Matthew Scarlett. Also Tim Clarke played for Hawthorn.

Definitely not physical and ducked his head when going for a mark and opposition teams picked it and worked him over. RDB also picked it and lost faith in him

He was super casual with concentration issues . I can remember him interacting with members of our cheer squad when play was in the other half .
