Players to target at the end of the year

And not sure what we offered Dom (not much I'm guessing given he's barely played) but I'd gladly offer $600k for Shiel. He's Josh Kennedy all over.

First round pick and chip compo if he leaves for sheil and treloar?

Jeremy Howe for zac Clarke

Wont happen but I like it

Tyson is a better player than Shiel... Shiel has been struggling at AFL level, while he is promising, he is definitely struggling

If treloar wants to come to vic we need to throw the sink at him I rate him much higher than shiel probably only behind Cameron at GWS

Not only is that a ridiculous overvaluation, I also think you're overestimating Shiel's size.

He's much smaller than JPK.

Here is my updated take on what we should do at the end of the year. We definitely have a few promising options

If Frawley does leave (which would be via free agency), i would completely skip free agency. If we lose Frawley than this would compromise our compensation pick, which is not something i want. I would assume well get around a pick 5 for Frawley (depending on where we finish) and this is something we could either hold or trade.

If Frawley doesnt leave than we should have a serious look at a few players.

Free Agency players to look at:

Matt Rosa

Todd Goldstein

David Mckay

Shaun Higgins (but he is VERY injury prone)

The trade table then becomes interesting, especially if we lose Frawley.

If we lose Frawley i would certainly look to trade on of the top picks.

Here are some players i feel we could entice or certainly make offers to, regardless if we fail or not.

Luke Parker- He would bolster basically our midfield to being something feared. He is a player with grunt than Sylvia would only sometime display. Viney and Parker would be exceptional in the midfield together, both love the contested ball and are absolute bulls at the contest.

Nathan Fyfe- This would be a bigger lure than Scully was to GWS. We would probably have to trade our top 2 picks and get there pick 15th on in return. It could be something that Fremantle would look at, considering there are a few good talls at the top end of this years draft.

Jonathan Patton- Patton is in a similar boat to Fyfe, he would have to be offered a hell of a lot of money and GWS would need some serious picks in return. It is a no brainer what Patton would do to bolster our forward line. He is one of the most impressive young forwards in the game and in a few years will be a nightmare for defenders. Lets hope we can get him and he doesnt become a nightmare for Tom Mcdonald in future.

Adam Tomlinson- He is a half forward who can also go back if needed. He is atheltic, good hands and can kick it a long way. I liked him in his first 2 years, he showed alot of promise. Unfortunately, like many of the GWS talented players, he has a hard time getting into the team full on talent and top draft picks. Would be great with Hogan, Dawes and JKH for future

Jonathan O'Rourke- Another top draft pick from GWS struggling to get a game. He would be good and i do not think we would have to offer all that much to get him, obviously still something reasonably high. He could be a good midfield prospect.

Zac Clarke- He is a player who doesnt get a big enough role because of Sandi. He would be good as a permanent ruck and would mean that our tall forwards wont need to ruck very much, if not ever. (i despise that when clubs put there forwards in the ruck)

I think there are more players that could be worth a look, but that would take all day to analyse.

The draft obviously has some really good promising forwards and i would be really keen to finish 2014 with 2 new tall forwards at the club.

If we could get one from another club (already developed) and one from draft.

I assume you mean Tania Hird in the context of teaching the pirouette?

well you could say that.

but james hird did ballet as a youngster. & with his recent escapade's, & dragging others into his poo, I thought he worthy of leading the new Mixed AFL game.

Was very highly rated as a young player, we would have to give up next to nothing, one of those players that could pay off bigtime and if it doesn't it hasn't cost us much

he's been a big disappointment, but if he cost nothing, he could be worthy of development, Roos team style.

We've got Fitzy who doesn't cost us much either, he comes with the 2nd worst ball drop in the game. Butcher has that covered easily. I think Fitz offers more as depth than Butcher.

Different styles, Fitzy can grow into a follower, & IMO will.

butcher is one dimensional in todays game. if he could kick, he could be taught to play back?

Tyson is a better player than Shiel... Shiel has been struggling at AFL level, while he is promising, he is definitely struggling

IMO Shiel's game is built on power, a bit like DMartin? he'll grow into his gamestyle I think. he could also play anywhere from back-pocket to forward-pocket

he's a beaut.

Not saying he is Kennedy CURRENTLY, but if he keeps on track with his development, in 5 years he'll be a hugely impressive midfielder with great physical presence and grunt.

He reminds me a lot of where Kennedy was back when he left Hawthorn and was targetted by Roos. In Roos We Trust, his recruitment has an exceptional track record.

Fair enough. But physically he is a lot smaller than JPK.

Which is where a great deal of JPK's influence comes from - pure size, strength and power.

Also think $600K is not only over the odds, but doesn't play to Roos' team philosophy.

Players won't get peanuts, but there'll be a fair and reasonable distribution.

Paying Shiel $600K at this stage wouldn't adhere to that.

$450k- $500k max. Maybe. Not sure Shiel is worth it.

He has looked good until recently, but may be carrying injuries.

I wonder if Dom's injury history was a reason GWS were happy to let him go? Arguably Patton and Shiel have had similar injury concerns, might help us lure them back home.

GWS are trying to lock in their best 22 and anyone outside that will be looking for a one way ticket home. They'll try to land another big fish at the end of this year, given how much they have spare from the Buddy deal that never happened.

If Dom hadnt of gotten injured, he would probably have comfortably been in their best 22.

So his injury did in a roundabout way make him trade bait

People wrote off Pederson before this year and roos has him playing well , the only difference is butcher has far more upside and would cost us even less, maybe we could even get him as a rookie

Dom Tyson was touted constantly, about heading back, to Richmond.

well we got him.

there will be others from GWS wanting home. we need to be aggressive at the trade table for quality.

Too bad Richmond were making inspired recruitment choices like Petterd and Hampson. :P

butcher was an excellent mark & mover in the Tac cup comp. I hadn't noticed his kicking back then, but the pace of game may have an influence, but he was an excellent competitor.

can his kicking be rectified, I have no Idea what the Roos team could do for him.

the other one is Vickery, under achieving at his beloved Tiges, but has talent. if they get impatient with him we should watch closely.

It's not the pace of the game when he has a set shot, it's the ball drop.

...and forget Vickery, a waste of space.

Wouldn't go near Vickery with a barge pole. Goes missing for long periods of time and has never given 100% effort for 100% of the game.. wouldn't be the only Tiger guilty of that though.

yeah he's awkward there, but if its only set shots, then that wouldn't be too bad to work on?

I don't think so, re TV,,, has talent, but maybe too comfortable in his surroundings. needs more urgency; & a better culture to work within.

  • REPORT: Collingwood

It was yet another disappointing outcome in a disappointing year, with Melbourne missing the finals for the second consecutive season. Indeed, it wasn’t even close, as the Demons' tally of seven wins was less than half the number required to rank among the top eight teams in the competition. When the dust of the game settled and supporters reflected on Melbourne's  six-point defeat at the hands of close game specialists Collingwood, Max Gawn's words about his team’s unfulfilled potential rang true … well, almost.
