Are we tanking?

Featured Replies

I'd take Whitfield over Viney, absolutely.

Will GW$ take the risk if we finish that low? I doubt it.

The problem for me comes in if GW$ were to do a similar trade with the GC as 2011 for the #1 compo, thus ending up with picks 1 and 2. That then becomes problematic as they could still take Whitfield and bid for Viney with pick 2...

There is no guarantee that we will finish above GWS; the way we are playing I doubt we would beat them.

But then you'd get whoever was going to go pick 2.

You'd get 2012 Trengove instead of 2012 Scully.

Much of a muchness really, and I don't think it's realistic to entertain ideas of not taking Viney.

It's gonna happen. We'd like to think we'll get away with getting him for a 2nd round pick, but it's very very unlikely.

f/s selections happen before the trade period. They'd have to bid for Viney before knowing if they were to get their hands on the #2 pick in the draft.

Nothing to prevent teams from negotiating a trade pre-trade period.

We did it with McLean, and made it public.

Yeah, I think Neeld's working his way through the list too.

Seeing who can and can't win contested footy, to weed out the ones that can't, and they simply won't last in his system.

It seems contested footy is a non negotiable, and if you can do the rest, great.

But if you can't win your own footy to begin with, you're gone.

That's how it looks to me.

Yep, look at Bomba thompson at the Cats. they nearly finished him before they had a realisation. And that was after Blight & Ayers, down at [censored] hollow.

We have been soft since Norm Smith was shafted, save for a couple of players dotted here & there, & also the time when Barass/Jordan took over /& developed and new culture. And it killed them as well. Northey took the reigns of a new stallion & instilled a togetherness.

We have been becoming soft again since, for decades...

This is a Major job Neeld has undertaken, mark my words. The culture is more than our players deep.

It's gotten into the fabric and the woodwork of our very club soul. In like staining a bit of Hoop Pine. It's a job & a half to remove/change.

Contested footy is a must. The start of it. Head over the ball or bugger off.

All the great teams have always played tough footy.

The Hawks of all successful Era's. The Sheedy Teams. The Matthews teams. The Cats now do it...

I wish we were tanking, it would provide a reason as to why we are so [censored].

GC are playing better than us FFS! A second year team and they have their [censored] together more than we do. If we are tanking (which I don't think we are) we are an absolute disgrace and we will never actually learn how to win. It's not as easy as flicking a metaphorical switch and just going well it's time to win now..

Many delists at the end of the year and they are quite easy to figure out. Smart drafting and stick the tank where the sun don't shine!!!

I don't think we would choose this year to tank, with GWS and Gold Coast in the same boat as us. (although they have an excuse)

But if we are tanking, all I have to say to Melbourne is STOP tanking and START [censored] winning

Back on topic I would be very dissapointed if this club ever tanked again I am ashamed that I ever cheered for my team to loose thinking it was best for the future! Well guess what getting all the best draft picks doesn't automatically mean you get the best afl footballers. I want this club to want to win every game they play no matter who they play no matter were they play at all costs! Draft picks mean nothing to me anymore!

Have you ever had to Unlearn something, to do a skill the totally opposite way to which you intuitively do it? Try writing with the opposite hand.

And then try under pressure on an unstable surface.

The lack of understanding by some supporters is palpable...

"But we have a new coach! Isn't that supposed to instantly solve everything?!"

Makes you wonder - across the board terrible performances and totally off the pace. There is something wrong - whether its exhaustion, or lack of training on basic skills.

I hope it is exhaustion from putting extra work at training during the week....and that is why we are shot after half time...geez I hope that is the case

Yeah, alright Jose. You think we are tanking do you?

Not at all.

I've just been watching the 3rd Qtr, & to my surprise, the boys intensity was fairly good, but we were chasing shadows as the Tigers had been and gone.

They were ontop of us & their game. They started to move the ball quickly, & left us in their wake.

We were behind them mentally, and that makes things tough. They had the continual initiative.

The "giving up" mentality is difficult to see on the television. You need to look at the entire ground to see our spread from contests drop off after half time.

Maybe more bewilderment than giving up. Frustration > pissweak...

It happens when a team changes method & it doesn't click. the whole team gets frustrated & rattled.

i did see on the replay something that made me take notice. It wasn't so much about the player as the thought it gave me. To do with our culture/workrate...

I thought I saw one of our boys stop working in one situation, I thought workrate... & then I thought culture, & then I remembered the quote about our players thinking we worked too hard over summer. & then I thought culture again.

I think I can see the common theme. And it's decades old...

It's one that Nee'ds overhauling.

The MFC should tank because we suck and we need good new players before we become fitzroy 2

Sorry, which is it? Care to get that right?

We suck.......... OR we should tank......

The 2 are kind of mutually exclusive.

We are Fitzroy 2 right now...tick tick

Spineless comment.

Hyperbole at its best, wyl. Our situation both on and off the field doesn't compare to the 90s Lions. If I remember correctly, they had less than 5000 members in their later years, and were completely unable to retain their talent. Scully might've walked out the door for the coin, but Mitch Clark walked in - that would never have happened at Fitzroy.

I'll also remind you of Carlton's run through the 00s:

2002: 3 wins

2003: 4 wins

2004: 10 wins

2005: 4 wins

2006: 3 wins

2007: 4 wins

An average of 4.6 wins over 6 seasons. (How good was this, btw? I loved seeing them down there.) We'd have to win zero this year to equal their average through that run - that isn't going to happen. So we're not even the worst team since Carlton 00s, let alone since Fitzroy. Their turnaround was also quick after that absolute horror run - they suddenly won 10 in 2008 and have been on the rise ever since.

Ha. Comparing Carlscum to the MFC. They at least know how to win & were always going to recover.

Hide your head in a paper bag if you wish Nasher. This club of ours is in serious trouble.

  • REPORT: Carlton

I am now certain that the decline in fortunes of the Melbourne Football Club from a premiership power with the potential for more success to come in the future, started when the team ran out for their Round 9 match up against Carlton last year. After knocking over the Cats in a fierce contest the week before, the Demons looked uninterested at the start of play and gave the Blues a six goal start. They recovered to almost snatch victory but lost narrowly with a score of 11.10.76 to 12.5.77. Yesterday, they revisited the scene and provided their fans with a similar display of ineptitude early in the proceedings. Their attitude at the start was poor, given that the game was so winnable. Unsurprisingly, the resulting score was almost identical to that of last year and for the fourth time in succession, the club has lost a game against Carlton despite having more scoring opportunities.

  • CASEY: Carlton

The Casey Demons smashed the Carlton Reserves off the park at Casey Fields on Sunday to retain a hold on an end of season wild card place. It was a comprehensive 108 point victory in which the home side was dominant and several of its players stood out but, in spite of the positivity of such a display, we need to place an asterisk over the outcome which saw a net 100 point advantage to the combined scores in the two contests between Demons and Blues over the weekend.

  • POSTGAME: Carlton

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.
