Keeper League

Touched on earlier by OMR and it is something I am keen to implement. This year, unless the idea receives an overly negative response, will be the beggining of our keeper league.

Basically it means that come next year you will keep 4 players from this year's list. These players will be selected before the draft which will then be made up of players not already kept in a team. Which adds an interesting dynamic to the upcoming draft because some of the players you pick may be 'your' players for several years to come.

I had thought originally to keep players from last year for this year but ultimately I feel that disadvantages some teams who might have weaker teams so it is best to start from a clean slate.

Why 4? It has to be an even number because of the draft system. The risk with more, say 6, is that if a team lucks out and gets 6 high quality players it may be years of them being very good which reduces the incentive for the others to continue on. 2 Just doesn't feel like enough.

Trading becomes an interesting proposition, teams that know they are out of the finals race can spend the latter part of the season attempting to trade some of their second tier players for better ones they can keep for the following year. Keeping in mind that round 17 is the trade deadline (2? weeks before the finals start). So it could keep the bottom half involved towards the end of the season and allow them to 'rebuild' their list.

This also takes the edge off long term injuries, good players injured for the remainder of the year can retain some value on the trade floor. It may also bring in the potential for 'off season' trading, but we can get to that in October.

So i'm taking the view that we will implement it from now (ie. keep players from this year for next year) but I am always happy to hear alterntive views. I know there are some here who have been involved in some similar fantasy leagues from different sports, I would be interested to know if they have been able to successfully implement such a system in case I have missed anything.

Could be good fun.

7 spots left in Demonland 2 - thanks to all those that have joined so far. We can set up a discussion on the message board within the league as to the preferred time, so we don't clog up the thread here.

Good work IWAP!

Happy to help if you have any questions in regards to set up.

I avoided captains for our league. Could add an interesting dynamic.

Thanks Jackattack. I like the extra strategic element with the captains. In our league last season, most people had a Pendlebury / Swan type as captain - while others used it for their ruckman or goal kicking forward to try and win those categories. Sometimes in won them the round.

I apologise in advance for the next few paragraphs,

Can't believe we're related...

On that post, the scoring categories, like OMR I'm leaning towards scoring being the tie-breaker. Having said that, my vote would go into the "don't care" box... since either of those two options achieve a similar result in the end, making score more important, slightly.

I do like the idea of weighting certain stats as more important than others. but that's a MASSIVE headache.

I'm not against it.

Keeper League

I love the keeper league idea. But I think we should treat it carefully, since ufooty is still in its infancy. Run it this year, and if a critical mass of people are happy, then it stays for next season. At which point we can also discuss upping the kept players to 8. Then 12 the next season... etc etc. I think if you have a list with 4 bona fide stars around the mid-twenties age range, you're going to keep them and just about never look elsewhere. Having 6-8 or more keepers means you can have 1-2 recent draftees (say David Swallow and Johnathan Patton) then 4-5 good solid 25ish players, and then 1-2 oldies who you know don't have long left, but that keep playing well, like Hayes and Goodes. Ripping idea.

I was going to say, perhaps the mods should think about having a fantasy footy page of threads. Just to get us off the main news page, since I imagine there'll end up being 2, or even more leagues all trying to post on one thread.

JCB has asked to express his sincere thanks to HT & JA for information provided. He states he cannot get into Ultimate footy at this time as it is down. However, will be checking constantly until he can operate it once again. He is currently overseas so he may even have a problem getting on the appropriate site at this time. He will be back next week. OMR he says send some good info his way, he says he will need them this season.

I took this to the table last year for discussion with other mods and it got turned down. Does it matter if two leagues of teams are posting on the one thread ? I don't think it matters, it's like one big happy family.

Taking a positive spin on this, maybe - just maybe - with two divisions going this year. JA, OMR, IWAP ,etc (or for that matter all concerned) we could discuss the possibility of a relegation/promotion system for the following years leagues. ie. bottom four, top four teams switch leagues next year ? How does everyone feel about that ?

And if there comes a time when there's 3 divisions, the process continues, etc. Just a suggestion.

Woo Hoo! Been looking forward to this starting again since it ended last year - because this means footy season is about to start!

Am signed up - I'll even remember to be at the draft this year so I don't (embarrassingly) muck up the times like I did last year

Doesn't work if we want to do a keeper league though as some players will invariably be the same

Tell him no problem. He has plenty of time before the draft. The seat is reserved and I reckon he's looking more forward to UF and knocking me off than he is to the QB clash.

Yeah, I hadn't taken JA's post into account. Have just read it, it seems worthwhile considering and careful planning must take place. Anyway just thought I'd throw it out there.

All positive from my end. I welcome change. I also welcome improving my knowledge on how hard TH's job is a list manager. Off season trading in October ?! - Oh yeah. Free Agency anyone ?? ^_^

Dream team is one of two new names joining the league to make it 18. They asked a long time ago to be included, and may not have got the memo about having the same demonland name as their Ufooty name (or at least similar) to keep it simpler on the forum. The are both demonland faithfuls although a little less vocal than the like of Dappa.

KEEPER LEAUGE

I still think we should still explore the option of keeping one player each from 2011

Surely this wont disadvantage any teams!

The two new teams simply get a priority pick before the 1st round

If we are going down this track anyway in 2013 then this One Player ONLY MVP 2011 selection will add an interesting twist to this season.

Yes / No / Maybe - Thoughts?

Here are my thoughts on having the keeper league from last year.

Would have to be two at a minimum because of the draft system, otherwise it wouldn't be fair. The coach who had pick 1 has too much of an advantage over the coach with pick 16, I can't remember who was picked last year so I can't give specific examples.

If we did bring it in this year instead of next it will disadvantage those who didn't select players with the keeper league in mind. And might disadvantage those who traded late in the season.

There is also the problem of not knowing who had which players. Although there might be a way around that if I delete our current league completely and we start again.

SnomeD now in.

Only eth38 is missing, anyone know him? Last seen on demonland in December.

To me the keeper league sounds like a good idea. However as mentioned above it would be unfair to start immediately with 2011 teams. Personally I'd like to limit it to 2 keepers per year, however I do see the merit in having more keepers and the list growing each year like a real AFL side. This does get thrown out of whack with promotion/demotion.

Just getting in early with a draft request, would it be ideal (or possible) to have the draft run over two nights? For those who can't be at the computer on draft night are relying on their pre selected picks and at the half way point of the draft their needs might change. By running half the draft on night one, people can reorder their list the next day or do further research if required before finishing the draft on night two. Sort of like a National and Pre Season draft.

Just wanted to mention again my preference for the draft.

I just want to be hang on to big Dean Cox again.... Last years Ufooty Brownlow medallist...... Can everyone just leave him until I get a draft pick ;-) although I did get him as second rounder last year - what were you all thinking.... Oh that's right I finished eighth he didn't help too much in the end - everyone double teamed me in the ruck department. Would still love to keep him....

Only 4 spots left for Demonland 2 (Or the Demonland - Robbie Flower league as i like to think of it). Get in quick if you want to play.

Draft time is set to Sunday February 26 at 8pm. Enough time to see each team play once (well twice) in the NAB cup

Unfortunately it can't be run like that in the live draft scenario.

We could do an 'online' draft like last year ('live' draft is also online but is different) but then we would have to wait 5 minutes between each pick. Which was a disaster last year, just plain painful.

The live draft allows for 1 minute intervals and manages the whole process better, picks will be happening on average every 20-30 seconds and so it really moves along nicely. I have run both and the live draft is 1000% better.
