Tom Scully in September ...

Featured Replies

May be old fashioned but Tom would be putting together his Pros and Cons list about now...

Pros to staying at MFC

  • Team mates and established relationships
  • Team more developed than GWS
  • Home town, established routine...
  • New coach in ... (Tom knows ;-))
  • Possibility of finals in 2012 and beyond

Cons to staying at MFC

  • More money at GWS

May not have covered all the factors at play and am undoubtedly biased. Any other issues (pros and Cons) you'd be weighing up in Tom's shoes?

Will you be happy or sad if Tom decides to stay?

I would be sad if Tom decided to stay and we were paying 600k to keep him.

At first I was a bit angry about it and potted him but then I cooled down and understood the reality of the situation.

He's just a kid who found himself in an extraordinarily unique situation and did what probably most of us would do in similar circumstances.

I think behind the scenes he's probably been quite honourable in his dialogue with the club and he is to be commended for that.

I'll be sad that we tanked for nothing because Andrew Demetriou decided to play God. This is his doing.

But ... you suck it up, move on and hope there's a silver lining in those compensation picks.

The MFC does not know.

We will make an announcement either way as soon as we do.

We owe Tom nothing if he leaves and we would tell the world of his departure as soon as he delivers the news.

There is no logic to the club keeping quiet knowing that Tom is off.

None.

You didn't answer the question.

His manager is on record as stating that Tom wouldn't look at the GW$ offer until the season is over (a ridiculous stance but nevertheless the one he took). Thus, we have to sit through this charade of Tom opening up the envelope, mulling over the offer, visiting the facilities and then 'making a decision'.

3 days isn't quite long enough. A week is about right to make a 'careful, studied decision'.

C'mon ... time to wake up.

I'll back you on this one RR ( love the courage of your convictions)

I am on the record as not agreeing with your opinion in any way shape or form. I am guilty of reading every one of the gazillion posts on this subject and lots from RR and there is nothing in what RR has said that is not possible or illogical and according to some scribes ( Ox) they would probably tell RR he is 100% on the money ( or in Ox's case 98% on the money).

Again, I dont agree and as long as RR doesnt pass it off as fact ( which he hasnt) then its just a different opinion to mine.

Postscript - RR got banned for calling Tom the "L" word - but if you take subtefuge into account all the way down the line as Ox has (and RR) then there is nothing in the RR scenario that you can state categorically is wrong ( in the absense of facts)

Of course it's sad to lose him. It's a bummer to lose a no.1 draft pick for 'so-so' compensation.

Add me to that group too, as of right now he is a demon. Treat him like one.

Say what? How on earth is this "protecting his reputation"?

If they were really interested in protecting his reputation, they would never have allowed that press conference in which he asserted he has not been approached etc etc. If they were really interested in protecting his reputation, they would never have tried to convince him to do a follow-up press conference (that he refused). If they were really interested in protecting his reputation, they would not be allowing this to drag on any longer, as it serves no ones' interests.

If he does go, then his reputation is shot regardless of when the announcement is made... the first press conference saw to that.

Sorry, but I rate your view as being right up there with the "single gun theory".

My view makes perfect sense but you believe what you want to believe.

People have called it a soap opera and that is probably accurate.

A grand JFK-like conspiracy? A bit over-dramatic.

He does try to pass it off as fact - by implying any one who thinks other wise needs to "wake up" or is an "idiot"

Who would know.

Certainly does give credence to what Tom has maintained all year...

The original article from Robinson and Ralph had a bad smell to it in my opinion. For the umpteenth time in this saga, it was full of absolutely nothing, other than Sheedy trying to create more exposure for his brand (which is what he is getting paid to do), and journo's stupidly taking the bait and running with it. There was absolutely no proof that Scully was going to "check out the facilities", and the only one that was claimed to advise him to do so was Sheedy himself!

Now we have some words in the press conference from their CEO that are starting to confirm what Tom has been telling us all year. Is their CEO lying? Who knows. But going by the quotes in the SMH, I am growing with confidence by the hour. But I still think one thing is certain, Tom hasn't made up his mind. Credit to the kid if he walks away from what the GWS are offering, and unless it is made public from the MFC what it actually is that we are paying him, it is quite unfair to suggest that we are paying him way over the odds.

What was Trengove's recent contract extension worth?

Disagree - certainly a bit of [censored] for tat - aggression met with aggression but I have been sparring with RR for 6 months on this ( embarrassed to say) and disagreed with 98% of his opinion but havent been called an idiot yet ( the day is still young). I dont think he has passed anything off as fact

Gws presser today.

Scully not visiting the facilities.

Offer out there but he is sorting out stuff with Melbourne.

Totally consistent with what this lad has said.

Can we now believe his word?

What about above?

Holmes was confident the AFL's 18th side, who will play in the league for the first time in 2012, had made a strong pitch to Scully.

"I think he has to work through the process with Melbourne, obviously they've got some discussions going on. From our point of view, we're clear about what our offer was, that's for him to consider," he said.

"Tom and Melbourne are obviously going through their discussions. Where that ends I don't know.

"It's well documented we're interested in Tom. That's been on the table, it's up to Tom to decide what he wants to do."

So here we have the CEO of GWS - again we either believe him (Holmes ergo Tom) or he too is in cahoots with a long list of "liars"

(reading the entire article - even he is rubbishing the journo's - "We would need a salary cap of $20M")

Add me to that group too, as of right now he is a demon. Treat him like one.

Shame a lot of people have a differing view. One look at the MFC Facebook group says it all - they want Scully gone.

Scully has done nothing to suggest he's going to GWS. He's weighing up others as every single player does during their career. Shame the media translates that into something completely different and a bigger shame that some people believe it.

What about above?

Pooh-poohing what he calls a charade - and firing off shots at opinions to the opposite.

Hey RR - is your theory of the last 6 months

1/ I strongly believe it to be fact ( hence opinion)

2/ Fact - end of story

( dont fail me now !)

Odd.

Tom really, really does not want to go.

That Dale Holmes is prepared to discuss him suggests everything is now fully transparent: the offer is there and he has not decided.

Mike Sheahan is on suicide watch.

It's fair to say that a lot of water had passed under the bridge since the offer from GWS was first put to Tom - most notably the sacking of the Coach and more recently the signing of some key players.

All this will be adding to the delay in the decision (even though I guess Ward has had similar outcomes at the Dogs) and I believe it must be playing a big part in Tom's analysis of not only the status quo, but also looking ahead into that 5 years of potential GWS shambles.

He's a smart kid, no doubting that, and I really would not be surprised if a large weighting of the decision was based on who the Coach will be - whether that's announced before Tom's decision or after.

Mike wouldn't be so self-reflective to care that much...

There are more footy journos than players these days and the need to stand out to get ahead, and that means writing, saying, and tweeting things that they really don't care to corroborate fully.

  • GAMEDAY: Geelong

It's Game Day, and reinforcements are finally arriving for the Demons—but will it be too little, too late? They're heading down the freeway to face a Cats side returning home to their fortress after two straight losses, desperate to reignite their own season. Can the Demons breathe new life into their campaign, or will it slip even further from their grasp?

  • PREVIEW: Geelong

"It's officially time for some alarm bells. I'm concerned about the lack of impact from their best players." This comment about one of the teams contesting this Friday night’s game came earlier in the week from a so-called expert radio commentator by the name of Kane Cornes. He wasn’t referring to the Melbourne Football Club but rather, this week’s home side, Geelong. The Cats are purring along with 1 win and 2 defeats and a percentage of 126.2 (courtesy of a big win at GMHBA Stadium in Round 1 vs Fremantle) which is one win more than Melbourne and double the percentage so I guess that, in the case of the Demons, its not just alarm bells, but distress signals. But don’t rely on me. Listen to Cornes who said this week about Melbourne:- “They can’t run. If you can’t run at speed and get out of the contest then you’re in trouble.

  • NON-MFC: Round 04

Round 4 kicks off with a blockbuster on Thursday night as traditional rivals Collingwood and Carlton clash at the MCG, with the Magpies looking to assert themselves as early-season contenders and the Blues seeking their first win of the season. Saturday opens with Gold Coast hosting Adelaide, a key test for the Suns as they aim to back up their big win last week, while the Crows will be looking to keep their perfect record intact. Reigning wooden spooners Richmond have the daunting task of facing reigning premiers Brisbane at the ‘G and the Lions will be eager to reaffirm their premiership credentials after a patchy start. Saturday night sees North Melbourne take on Sydney at Marvel Stadium, with the Swans looking to build on their first win of the season last week against a rebuilding Roos outfit.
Sunday’s action begins with GWS hosting West Coast at ENGIE Stadium, a game that could get ugly very early for the visitors. Port Adelaide vs St Kilda at Adelaide Oval looms as a interesting clash, with both clubs form being very hard to read. The round wraps up with Fremantle taking on the Western Bulldogs at Optus Stadium in what could be a fierce contest between two sides with top-eight ambitions. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?

  • CASEY: Gold Coast

For a brief period of time in the early afternoon of yesterday, the Casey Demons occupied top place on the Smithy’s VFL table. This was only made possible by virtue of the fact that the team was the only one in this crazy competition to have played twice and it’s 1½ wins gave it an unassailable lead on the other 20 teams, some of who had yet to play a game.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

In my all-time nightmare game, the team is so ill-disciplined that it concedes its first two goals with the courtesy of not one, but two, fifty metre penalties while opening its own scoring with four behinds in a row and losing a talented youngster with good decision-making skills and a lethal left foot kick, subbed off in the first quarter with what looks like a bad knee injury.
