The Tom Scully Saga

Dandeeman, would you please explain your comment of 09.31pm - the english is strange, but maybe I'm just not very bright.

Tongue in cheek.

and this secrecy was a key ingredient in getting Barassi over the line. who knows if the internet had existed in the second half of '64 the supporter base may have persuaded Ron to stay and history may have been different.

Don't discount the possibility that the current situation is exactly the opposite and that some of the reactions that we have seen in this thread may play into the hands of those whose interests are met by creating fear and confusion.

Look, I presume you are targetting comments such as Red n Blue Flame which I agree shouldn't be put up without foundation. Come on, a comment on a player's kicking!!! you must be joking, on what basis did you allow years of dribble about Cameron Bruce. all I am saying is be consistent. I prob. go back longer than you and not only remember the Barassi defection but the way supporters were ambushed with the sudden announcement he was going to Carlton. It was presented to the public as a fait accompli, and this secrecy was a key ingredient in getting Barassi over the line. who knows if the internet had existed in the second half of '64 the supporter base may have persuaded Ron to stay and history may have been different.

bush demon, I'd say that the abuse of Bruce was always clamped down on - cripes, how many times did we end up banning Yze_Magic because of it? Often with player criticism it's a very fine line, I see posts on a daily basis that make me go "hmm, this one probably straddles the line", but most often pay benefit of the doubt. The reason is that player abuse shouldn't be tolerated, but at the same time we're trying to avoid creating an excessively censored environment because I think that is just as unattractive (and much more difficult to maintain). It's difficult enough to be consistent when you're not sure yourself whether a post has crossed the line or not - add this to the fact that there are currently probably 6 active moderators weighing up the same issues and it's not often you'll get the same result every time.

The other thing is that not every moderator reads every post - we're all just members here like you, and we mostly just read what we're interested in. Especially in a mega-thread like this one - three pages of posts were added to this thread during the time I was asleep last night. I have a full time job and a family too - I just don't have time to wade through every single post.

Just a tip for yourself and for everyone: If ever you see a post that you think has crossed the line, click the "Report" button that (appears at the bottom left of each post) and it will be reviewed and addressed by a Moderator. Everyone can do their bit to make Demonland a more readable place.

left and right confusion

Thanks for the clarification dandeeman - for a while there I thought the comment was treading on dangerous sexual grounds!

That's well said, Nasher. PS my comments about Scully's kicking were not meant as a criticism of the guy, it was more about how players are trained to work on their weaknesses. I remember Stuart Loewe of StKilda improved markedly over his career once he put serious work into that aspect of his game. Nick Riewoldt continues to take flack over his kicking even though the rest of his game is excellent.

Yes, I agree it's a balance. In - I think - the Barassi biography Ron recounted walking into a club function at the end of the season, must have been at the tipping point and he got a negative reaction from some team-mates. After this session he got back in contact with the Carlton people and made up his mind. These days players would probably be totally unfussed - ie Jack Trengove - cause they are career-focussed whereas supporters are team-obsessed. That was made clear by the warm reaction Gary Ablett got from his former team-mates.

any players that were linked with gold coast that didnt sign until end of the year stay with their club?

Gotta wonder whether TS is looking at Kreuz (who has been reported everywhere to have had Ablett-esque cash thrown at him by GWS) on the weekend and his leading of an absolute demolition of a very good Sydney side, compared to Gary Ablett being the only one cutting apart a Hawthorn side and eventually having the team get flogged. While I know there's the dollars and cents equation, we're also talking about a guy who simply wants to win, no matter what. Winning is what GWS will not do, certainly not next year (while they may get A win, more than 1 I highly doubt) and probably not until 2015 at the earliest will they look at a Melbourne 2010 season. In the meantime, Melbourne will almost definitely be playing finals, hopefully flag challenging.

Except that GWS will have the added advantage of topping up with unrestricted free agency. But i wouldn't rule out payback either, esp if they pinch pendlebury or a player such as Kreuzer. GWS's future is by no means assured.

tippet re-signed at the end of 09. not during 2010.

Well the thing is, Kreuzer re-signed. GWS did offer him huge $$, but he said no and signed with Carlton. He's staying.

Unrestricted free agency will get them a shot at 2 players at clubs rather than one, that's all. And the second player will be in that older bracket, 27-28ish. Pendlebury doesn't qualify for FA, he's got a shot cos of his contract being up in 2012. Goddard at least qualifies for Restricted FA but they can throw the megabucks at him too.

The reality is, with possibly the only exception being TS seemingly noone is heading to GWS this year. Certainly noone with Ablett-like class who will demolish off his own back but have the rest of the team falter around him. They will struggle far more than the Cold Toast simply because there isn't that bracket of hard bodies that will be able to help them win - Bock, Brown, Rischitelli, those sorts.

I just heard on the radio that Scully has gone.....

To the toilet .

Ha Ha .

Taylor Walker?

Taylor Walker?

Admittedly forgot about him. Still though...GC have 12 players with AFL experience on their list. Right now I can't see more than 5, let alone 12.

I have said all along that a lot of the gossip is designed to destabilise the foundation clubs and foster the impression that players are on the move. perhaps as you say, the rationale behind Tom waiting is to see who else is going north, which can't be known until offers start kicking in post-season. if it is a fizzer and if melbourne finish with a wet-sail it would be very hard for him to walk out into the unknown.

From my perspective, the issue is not so much Tom Scully - but the thought that we were gifted picks 1 and 2 and may not ultimately get the benefit of what that could potentially have delivered us.

And, for what it's worth, it is a big issue. Objectively. Only earlier tonight on 'On The Couch' did Roos, Healy and Sheahan raise it once again. I hope Scully was listening, because Roos thinks his future should be well and truly at the Demons.

What did Roos say?

Hi guys (and gals),

We've decided to close this thread.

Another thread has been created if you would like to continue discussing Scully:

Please note the request to keep the discussion civil. Thanks.

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

The final score in Saturday's game against Hawthorn was almost identical to that from their last contest three months ago. Melbourne suffered comprehensive defeats in both games, but the similarities ended there. When they met in Round 9, the Demons were resurgent, seeking to redeem themselves after a lacklustre start to the season. They approached the game with vigour and dynamism, and were highly competitive for the first three quarters, during which they were at least on par with the Hawks. In the final term, they lapsed into error and were ultimately overrun, but the final result did not accurately reflect their effort and commitment throughout the match.

  • CASEY: Box Hill

The Casey Demons ended the regular season on a positive note and gained substantial momentum leading into the finals when they knocked the Box Hill Hawks off the top of the VFL ladder in their final round clash at Casey Fields. More importantly, they moved out of a wild card position in the finals race and secured a week's rest as they leapfrogged up the ladder into fifth place with their decisive 23-point victory over the team that had been the dominant force in the competition for most of the season.
