Still not a fan of the three points at the end as it's bloody hard to win and if yo are up by two and lose in the last that would be a bit harsh.

Yep, you make a good point Gorgo but from my point of view and in the interest of keeping up the interest (so to speak), the 3 pointer at the end keeps the participants in it, often until the final week.

And finishing 'on the podium' only is interesting for historical purposes.  Anyway, the key to it all is perseverance and never believing you're out of it.  From memory @Strafford missed a couple/few weeks in the first comp but was still the joint winner with 'cfh'

The 'mathematical possibility' is never more apt than with this unnecessarily cruel tipping comp

Few injuries for the Rams this week.

Still no Aaron Donald and I just read that Ogletree has not signed a new deal yet and it seems to have stalled... if we lose them both I'm flying to LA and burning down the half built stadium.

Well the start of the season can't come quick enough now.....

10 days to go and it's on ... not a bad game to start with too - KC @ Patriots (Friday Sept 8 - 10.30am)

Anyway, for those who may want to participate in an NFL tipping comp,  we're running one here (again)

Feel free to join in the comp anytime.  It's a bit of fun and we could do with a few more people on the thread anyway.  It looks like we've got 6 or 7 starters to begin with so it's all systems go.

Rules of the 'Demonland' NFL tipping competition

  • All participants are allowed 3 picks only in any given week - but, they must all be 'road' teams.
  • Anyone who correctly tips all 3 winners from their 3 picks receives 1 point (any number of people can win a point in any given week)
  • Bonus points are up for grabs in weeks 2,  5,  7,  9,  11,  13,  15 (2 points to all winners) whilst week 17 carries 3 points for any given winner.
  • No margins or correct scores are required - just the straight winners.
  • If you miss a week or come into the comp later on,  there is no penalty.  You just simply miss the chance to win points for that week or weeks. You can join in the comp at any time.
  • Your tips must be in before the start of Monday's games (AEST) ... or before the Friday game if you include that game.  All 3 tips must be included in your post (editing your tips is strictly forbidden :))
  • The person (or persons) with the most points at the end of the regular season wins.

Here's an early look at the week 1 games & lines ...

I'm thinking of dumping Foxtel, but living in the country I get terrible reception.

Does 7mate replay games or can you watch them at your lesuire on their site or is it as it's shown and if you miss it, so be it.

Don't take it as gospel but pretty sure theres no replays on 7mate, I could be wrong though... As much as I find it a rip off I just paid the $275 for gamepass so I know I can watch all games... Bloke at work chipped in $100 so has worked out ok for me

To be honest, NFL coverage in this Country is not great currently. You got 7Mate who often whiff on the right games to show, nothing on Fox and then the Sun/Mon night games. The Redzone channel is a slight reprive hard when you're fans like us who want to analyse a whole game!

Think my method will be to 'find a way' to obtain Niners games and watch them on Mon night.

I loved game pass when I had it but it's pretty expensive and I now live in the country on adsl1 so don't trust the connection.

Think I'll stay with Foxtel for now.

Ok I'm back in for tipping and thought I'd pick the division champs:

AFC:
North: Steelers
East: Pats
South: Texans
West: ???? Chiefs
WC: Raiders, Bengals

NFC:
North: Packers
East: Eagles
South: Falcons
West: SeaHawks
WC: Giants, Panthers

Aside from the usual standouts - Pats in the AFC East, Packers and SeaHawks in the NFC, there's some really competitive divisions.

With a bumper crop of QB's coming in to the league the teams without one - in particular the Jets, the Bills might fall by the wayside quickly. Otherwise a lot of teams will have something to offer. I expect the 49ers offense with Hoyer playing for Shanahan before will surprise a lot of people. They won't be Atlanta but they'll score.

As a Bears fan I'm hoping the team restores some proper Bears defense and they can if they stay healthy. After that most of the season is just living in hope Trubisky develops in to a franchise QB.

Leaving aside those teams with little hope,  I found myself still leaving out a number of decent or half decent teams (Giants,  Eagles,  Texans,  Raiders,  Bengals,  Saints(?),  Arizona(?).  Rams(?)

As always, a few teams will fall away and other, less fancied teams will bob up from nowhere.  Every year we've done this I reckon we've all missed by a fair bit.  Picking 5 from 8 division winners is about par.

AFC:
North: Steelers
East: Pats
South: Colts
West: Denver

WC: KC,  Ravens

NFC:
North: Packers
East: Dallas
South: Falcons
West: Seahawks

WC:  Vikings,  Panthers

NFC Championship - Falcons/Dallas

AFC Championship - Patriots/Steelers

SB: Patriots/Dallas

There's a couple of standout road chances in week 1 but finding a definite 3rd road winner is tricky ...

We are back!!!

Steelers

Falcons

Panthers

Atlanta

Pittsburgh

Carolina

Colts look to be also missing their centre as well as Luck.

I think we will be missing Donald.

Imagine Donald over the back up centre against the back up QB... Sigh...

Week one is so hard as you can not rely on preseason results.

I'm at a stage with the pre-season games where I just have a quick look at the results and how many snaps Rodgers has had!

The clubs get a bit out of them with regards schemes, formations and the like but the scoring and the winning & losing seems secondary.

We didn't even play any starters vs the Packers in the last game.

Wow. Eagles?

I'm a fan, but jeez. I can't see us getting anywhere near Giants or Cowboys... and probably struggling against Skins TBH.

It will be interesting what the leauge does with the Bucs/Miami game scheduled in Miami with this hurricane about.. Playing in Florida has been ruled out and now it's whether they relocate or move it to week 11 where both sides have their bye... Surely they just relocate, no bye is a huge disadvantage for both teams!

Yeah that would suck for the teams having no bye.

Righto Macca, we'll see how long I last before I forget to put my tips in

Let's start with

Falcons

Steelers

(shudder) Eagles

  • REPORT: Carlton

I am now certain that the decline in fortunes of the Melbourne Football Club from a premiership power with the potential for more success to come in the future, started when the team ran out for their Round 9 match up against Carlton last year. After knocking over the Cats in a fierce contest the week before, the Demons looked uninterested at the start of play and gave the Blues a six goal start. They recovered to almost snatch victory but lost narrowly with a score of 11.10.76 to 12.5.77. Yesterday, they revisited the scene and provided their fans with a similar display of ineptitude early in the proceedings. Their attitude at the start was poor, given that the game was so winnable. Unsurprisingly, the resulting score was almost identical to that of last year and for the fourth time in succession, the club has lost a game against Carlton despite having more scoring opportunities.

  • CASEY: Carlton

The Casey Demons smashed the Carlton Reserves off the park at Casey Fields on Sunday to retain a hold on an end of season wild card place. It was a comprehensive 108 point victory in which the home side was dominant and several of its players stood out but, in spite of the positivity of such a display, we need to place an asterisk over the outcome which saw a net 100 point advantage to the combined scores in the two contests between Demons and Blues over the weekend.

  • POSTGAME: Carlton

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.
