2010 Player Review - # 1 Matthew Warnock

Featured Replies

Wouldn't be sad to see the big fella go if the trade was fair as others have mentioned.

Both Garland and Frawley obviously took steps forward this year with Frawley being the big improver.

Riv has some continuity now which will hopefully take him into 2011 with a strong mindset.

Can't really see Warnock as part of our best back 6 unless of course there are injuries.

There will not be a lot of trades this year, clubs have nothing to gain. The only club worth trading with is the Gold Coast. On Warnock, why would Carlton want him, I don't see much difference between Warnock and Thornton. Warnocks main problem is he always tries to go body on body and searches for the contact, not a bad thing but he doesn't watch the footy when doing this, which results in his forward reading the footy better and increases the likelyhood of Warnock being out of position.

He would be upset by this year, well worth keeping on our list.

Bail, Garland, Bartram, Frawley and even big JAMAR... what do they all have in common?

Well what they all have in common is that they are all exceptionally quick (aside from Russian, who is a ruckman).

They all defied the odds like no one thought possible. Jamar and Frawley, in particular, have come on in leaps and bounds.

Bartram is now a regular thanks to his defensive pressure and ability to take on the small forwards with competence.

Bail is a gret find who gets a lot of the ball.

Garland has come along well with his pace and spoiling ability!

Cheney can be just like this crop if he is given a go. I hope he does and is able to hold his own. Humble pies what people will be eating.

I'll back ya to the hilt, Kyle.

I second this- I will back Cheney as well.

How did this become a Fetta Cheney thread?

Cheney and Warnock are not similar players.

I'll actually be very surprised if Cheney plays another AFL game, purely due to his physical deficiencies.

Cheney who can only play as a small (unlike what has been suggested above) and with Grimes out he had a chance to push his way in.

He is way down the order for a reason.

Warnock is only not getting a game because Chip, Garlo and Rivers have been so cohesive as a defensive unit.

Warnock should be traded only if we can get great compensation for him, because his value as a KPD is at a premium at the moment (as shown by the teams fighting over a 30 year old Chris Tarrant)

Yay, I have a follower!!!

I do hope he manages to get a gig but after reading some responses on here... I have a feeling a fringe player may be all he'll ever be. Which is a shame because at VFL level Gotch always says, "another solid game yet again from Kyle" week in and week out.

But as E25 said... this thread is dedicated to Warnock. Cheney rant is over.

I'd be unhappy to see Matthew up for trade and ousted. Carlton would go after him becaause they have clearly stated they will be "vigourously going after" tall defenders which included M. Warnock. Let's not forget his brother Robbie is a Blue.

I didn't say we should trade Warnock. I was just saying that it was worrying that he got a caning on more than a few occasions this year.

I'll add my last thought on Cheney - I'm sorry, I just don't see the talent. There's very limited upside to him. Rhino highlighted the obvious reasons.

And as for Frawley defying the odds - he was a skinny first-round draft pick just waiting to blossom.

Unfortunately it happens to be the same guy who also believes -among other things- that it would be a very clever move to ask Carlton for Bryce Gibbs in a straight trade for Warnock. Having jaceybee support you on this forum is sort of like getting into a heated, public political argument, and then having someone run up wearing a clown suit, setting himself on fire, humping the other guys leg and saying that, incidentally, he agrees with your point about the taxes.

I would be happy to keep Warnock, but again, I just can't see why people find it "worrying" that Carlton might be interested in him, when we have yet to even hear whats on offer for him. He's under contract, so it's not like we're going to get screwed. Are you really saying that Warnock's status as a handy backup defender makes him untouchable, and that no matter what Carlton (or anyone else) offer us, you don't want him traded? Dare I say it, not even for Bryce Gibbs?

The draft is rumored to be shallow. With Judd in his prime the blues are in "win now" mode. Would not be surprised to see them throw their first selection for Warnock along with our 3rd or 4th selection.

I would prefer to keep Matty, but if his playing career will be more fruitful elsewhere then I wish him all the best.

  • PREVIEW: St. Kilda

It seems like only yesterday that these two sides faced off against each other in the centre of the continent. It was when Melbourne was experiencing a rare period of success with five wins from its previous six matches including victories over both of last year’s grand finalists.  Well, it wasn’t yesterday but it was early last month and it remains etched clearly in the memory. The Saints were going through a slump and the predicted outcome of their encounter at TIO Traeger Park was a virtual no-brainer. A Melbourne victory and another step closer to a possible rise into finals contention. Something that was unthinkable after opening the season with five straight defeats.

  • REPORT: Carlton

I am now certain that the decline in fortunes of the Melbourne Football Club from a premiership power with the potential for more success to come in the future, started when the team ran out for their Round 9 match up against Carlton last year. After knocking over the Cats in a fierce contest the week before, the Demons looked uninterested at the start of play and gave the Blues a six goal start. They recovered to almost snatch victory but lost narrowly with a score of 11.10.76 to 12.5.77. Yesterday, they revisited the scene and provided their fans with a similar display of ineptitude early in the proceedings. Their attitude at the start was poor, given that the game was so winnable. Unsurprisingly, the resulting score was almost identical to that of last year and for the fourth time in succession, the club has lost a game against Carlton despite having more scoring opportunities.

  • CASEY: Carlton

The Casey Demons smashed the Carlton Reserves off the park at Casey Fields on Sunday to retain a hold on an end of season wild card place. It was a comprehensive 108 point victory in which the home side was dominant and several of its players stood out but, in spite of the positivity of such a display, we need to place an asterisk over the outcome which saw a net 100 point advantage to the combined scores in the two contests between Demons and Blues over the weekend.
