Shane Valenti wins Liston Trophy

Thanks for proving my point.

Hmmm. Hard one B)

Last year he was being compared with Greg Williams. So he has definitely slipped.

Valenti is good at VFL level. No higher.

As I said, get over yourself.

So, considering Billy Swan's efforts...

Should we be re-drafted Valenti, carrying him to 150 games, then putting him out to stud?

Honestly, I can't disagree with anything Rhino has said on this thread.

Valenti is great at the lower levels but will never be quite good enough for AFL.

Shame, but true.

Pace isn't everything - ask Swan

Ask Swan ? Are you serious ? Swan is one of the quickest across the ground, especially in and around near stoppages ! Swan's reactionary skills are at the highest level in the AFL. MVP - speaks for itself really.

Agree.

He moves awkwardly, shuffles along the field, but moves faster than nearly any other.

Regardless of how it looks, he is exceptionally effective. Same as Chapman.

Yes, waddles almost fast motion duck like but very effective. He made Liam Picken look like a witches hat on Saturday night at a few stoppages. As well as several of Liam's teammates.

You could be right, but i just really think he could play a similair role that Luke Ball does for Collingwood.

I just want to see him get a real chance as i think he deserves it.

Problem with Shane is that he can only play one role and that is as an engine room mid. This is why he is compared to Mitchell and the likes. Sam Mitchell is much the same in that he can only play this role. He doesn't have the pace to play a defensive role or the goal kicking nous to play as a forward. This hurts him.

If Valenti went to a club that neeeded such a player he would pick up his 25-30 possessions every week and use it well, but he comes with some major limitations.

That's exactly right, dandeeman. Effectively he needs to be so good that he gets a tag each week because his lack of size and athleticism means that he cannot fulfill other roles around the ground, nor does he have the ability to compete defensively with the opposition.

Mitchell took a while to make it to AFL level and he still hs a role because he's so good that the opposition needs to play defensively on him. He cannot do the same thing to them, though. Valenti is a good player and wins a lot of the ball, but he does not damage the opposition enough for them to warrant putting a stopper on him.

In the VFL he is easily good enough for the opposition to tag him first.

Good post. I like it when people really break down why players are or are not good enough. It makes me feel like I'm actually learning something, rather than just wasting my time on a footy forum (even though that's still what I'm doing).

Since when were you wasting your time on Demonland? :P
