Leign Matthews was hardly the sniper. Often he was front and centre with the "hard" stuff.

One of the greatest players I have seen.

Should have won a B'low one year where he dominated every other award by a country mile.

If we are talking AFL time then Grinter and Matthews are out of contention.

What about his efforts on Peter Giles,Stephen Smith,Neville Bruns ?

Barry Hall hands down!! Anyone remember that final against the Saints in 1998 when he had a 3 minute snap. Went after Mouse and Yze. Dropped a f...'n knee to a guy on the ground. Waas dragged by Alves and then punched the roof of the dugout. Cost the Saints the game and Alves huis coaching career in the process.

Just watching Biff, Bumps and Brawlers and was wondering who in your view was the dirtiest player on the field. The names i throw up are Lewis,Worsfold, Grinter, Williams, Lockett. Keen to know your thoughts

Terry Wheeler, you said dirtiest, not roughest or most rugged or toughest or thug.

Wheeler was an exponent of the squirrell grip & got many players suspended.

Toughest thugggs may have been Ditterich, Lockett, Ron Andrews, Matthews, Don Disher, et al.

Post Vfl.

Ron Andrews, Brereton, Lockett, Roger Merrett,

Buddha Hocking and Chris Lewis. Both never failed to go into a pack knees first, or swing a fist around in a tackle.

Haha...I remember that game where Hall snapped! Woey practically made a mission out of making Hall snap that day!

wallace from essendon

monkhorst from collingwood

baker from the saints

osborne from hawthorn

i consider a dirty player one who is clearly out their to just tag or wack blokes.

grinter was dirty but he was skilled

carey was dirty, but so was voss but they were stars

Happened right in front of me. It was a complete snap-i reckon he will do it again this year to.

Dale Kickett anyone? Didn't he get rubbed out for 10+ weeks for punching Phil Read a couple of times? For that matter, Phil Read?

Both probably too ordinary to bother remembering actually.

We should refer to him as Dale Karma.

I would say it is the quintessential act of sniping.

Dippierdethuggero How he & Greg Williams won Brownlows is beyond me.

Dipper is a lovely charming bloke and I happen to know he gets along quite well with a lot of former umpires...

Seecamp punched Brad Pierce in the face at 1/4 against the Blues in '98. Probably deserved it though.

He did deserve it. Got seekers in the aggots just before he retaliated.

I went to school with Dipper, then known as Bertie. He was a real gentleman and nothing like his football persona. Big and strong as an ox but carried himself with grace. Used to scare all the bullies who had a go at the weaker ones.

The dirtiest IMO and not those who have brain explosions which determine some of their actions and in no particular order are Wallis, Andrews, Grinter (the human coathanger but OK off the field), Liberatore, Rhys-Jones, Merrett, Bruns, Millane, Mathews and Lewis. None of these players could ever get away with their game plan in todays game. To pick the baddest I'd say Wallis and Andrews. Both merciless and brutal. Dustin Fletcher is perhaps the sneakiest with the low stuff these days and maybe Scarlett too.

I think the old Richmond influence carried on by Sheedy and Northey made some of these guys into what they were. I don't recall Grinter ever being a bad guy before Northey came along.

Yes i met Dipper a couple of times when he owned a restaurant in the early 90's. He is a nice bloke And he does a lot of work for Auskick etc

But on the field he was a thug-maybe it was Hawthorn that bought thuggery to the fore. ie "Delicate Des" Dickson.

I'm sure many people enjoy the company of Dean Wallis off field to, but after the 2000 GF i wouldn't have a bar of him.

White line fever gets many people.

Not sure if other clubs did this but Hawthorn had a policy in the 70's to go around all the schools in their zone and pick out the biggest strongest kids they could find even though some couldn't play footy and train them up for a few years before they got a game. I recall Leigh Mathews brother Kelvin(just as tough as his brother) coming around to our school and got the likes of Dipper and a few others to go and train with Hawthorn. They wer'nt interested in skinny kids who could play.

I remember Peter Knights coming out to my school on behalf of the Commonwealth bank-teaching kids to save, giving out those elephant money boxes!!

Grinter allways had an aggressive side.

Just his makeup. So do I.

Yes, Michael Tuck would not be considered big but he was strong. At the time I'm recalling he had been around at Hawthorn for quite a few years and was an established player. I believe he also spent 3 or 4 seasons in the reserves before he got a senior game. Besides he was not your typical skinny kid, he was a freak.

I did see Rod Grinter a few times at the Harp Hotel in Kew and even played a game of pool with him. He seemed a decent guy unlike some of the morons who used to hang out there.

There were a number of Demonland Trackwatchers at Gosch's Paddock this morning to bring you their observations from Preseason Training. KEV MARTIN'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS They were going hard at each other. The sims were in two 15 minute blocks. The second block finished a few minutes early, they gathered and had another 7 minutes at it. I think they were asked to compete, as they would play against an opposition. There was plenty of niggle, between some of them. At the end o

Better late than never … and quite frankly, there’s very little to report other than that training took place at Casey Fields this morning, that Tracc was there nursing his rib injury and that some photographs are on the club’s social media including this one of Clarrie in Raging Bull stance that gives rise for confidence. The other news is that the club has a new train on player in 185cm Dandenong Stingrays midfielder Noah Hibbins-Hargreaves (love the hyphenated name which is just so fitti

Welcome back to Demonland for those like me who have been on vacation. I’m posting this with some trepidation because of a certain amount of uncertainty surrounding the return of preseason training in 2025 after a flurry of weddings including those of our coach, one of our superstar players and a former premiership champion player and bloke, not to mention the recent mysterious incident that occurred on the Mornington Peninsula.  I believe that the team reassembles this morning at Casey Fie

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to
