Analysing this a little deeper, our injury list isn't really that crippling to our best 22.

Colin Sylvia (broken jaw) test- will play round 2 latest.

Neville Jetta (groin) 1-2 weeks- borderline best 22, only a 2nd year player and doesn't play an important position. Only 1-2 weeks away regardless

Jack Watts (back) 1-2 weeks- Not injured anymore... played 1/2 for Casey last week, so is not injured. Will play 2-3 weeks in Casey no doubt

Sam Blease (ankle) 1-2 weeks-Not injured anymore... about to play first game for Casey. Yet to play an afl game, so no real loss

Paul Johnson (foot) 4 weeks- Not near the best 22

Cale Morton (knee) 8-10 weeks- Important player who'll be sorely missed

Liam Jurrah (shoulder) Indefinite- important player who'll be sorely missed

Daniel Bell (shoulder) Indefinite- Not near the best 22

John Meesen (ankle) Indefinite- Not near the best 22-

Max Gawn (knee) Indefinite-Not near the best 22 + first year player

Luke Tapscott(hip) Indefinite- Not near the best 22 + first year player

Basically, our only injuries that will effect us on field is Morton and Jurrah--- yes two important losses. But only really 2.

Sylvia will play round 1 or 2. Watts will be playing at Casey this week, ready for AFL in 3-4 weeks.

Here's the afl.com version:

Colin Sylvia (jaw) - 1 week

Paul Johnson (foot) - 1-2 weeks

Neville Jetta (groin) - 3-4 weeks

Daniel Bell (shoulder) - 4-5 weeks

Cale Morton (knee) - 6-8 weeks

Liam Jurrah (shoulder) - 14 weeks

Max Gawn (knee) - indefinite

John Meesen (ankle) - indefinite

Luke Tapscott (hip) - indefinite

Still no mention of Wonaeamirri. Odd.

Great to see Watts, Blease & Garland off that list though.

How did Tapscott get his injury - was he injured when we got him?

This is the list at the club web site I think. I prefer http://www.injuryupdate.com.au/afl.php which provides a bit of detail like for Tapscott

Luke Tapscott hip cartilage injury Pre-season Indefinite

Has had hip arthroscopic surgery to repair a torn labrum and will be ruled out until mid season

Correct, along with Buddy of course!

My borther and other Hawks are saying Nateman is a starter.

What source for this claim?

Neville Jetta (groin) 1-2 weeks- borderline best 22, only a 2nd year player and doesn't play an important position. Only 1-2 weeks away regardless If fit, with no Aussie and Maric not showing anything I believe he would be lining up this weekend

Jack Watts (back) 1-2 weeks- Not injured anymore... played 1/2 for Casey last week, so is not injured. Will play 2-3 weeks in Casey no doubt Not ready for AFL, has been injured for a large part of the preseason. May have been in the best 22 with a full preseason.Sam Blease (ankle) 1-2 weeks-Not injured anymore... about to play first game for Casey. Yet to play an afl game, so no real loss. Not ready for AFL, has been injured for 12 months. May have been in the best 22 with 12 months development

Paul Johnson (foot) 4 weeks- Not near the best 22 Not sure if he will ever be in the best 22, but no chance to step up due to injuries

Cale Morton (knee) 8-10 weeks- Important player who'll be sorely missed

Liam Jurrah (shoulder) Indefinite- important player who'll be sorely missed

Daniel Bell (shoulder) Indefinite- Not near the best 22 I don't think he would be best 22, but has not been able to show if he can recapture past form due to injury

John Meesen (ankle) Indefinite- Not near the best 22- Has been injured for almost 12 months after showing slight imporvment, may have been closer to best 22 if not injured

Max Gawn (knee) Indefinite-Not near the best 22 + first year player

Luke Tapscott(hip) Indefinite- Not near the best 22 + first year player

I've made a few comments above. I agree most of these players are not in the best 22, but if they had not been injured for a long period they may have been. For some of them, the reason that they are no loss is becuase they have been injured.

He and Buddy got suspended last year. He`s not playing

Yep, according to wikipedia "Chance with captain Sam Mitchell were the only Hawthorn player to play in all games in 2009. He Will miss the first game of 2010 because of a 1 game suspension for striking Matthew Lloyd of Essendon in the last game of 2009 season."

Bateman always does a number on us whenever we play the Hawks. To my mind, his absence will harm them almost as much as that of Buddy and their entourage of injured ruckmen.

First time in a while I've felt a fondness for Matthew Lloyd. :)

Did the footy show have a squad for Saturday's game? No-one seems to have posted it anywhere. I caught the last half hour or so and other teams' squads were presented. So ours must have been? Have I missed it here? Or has no-one posted it?

Squads released this arvo.

The footy show showed teams bit they seemed completely made up.

I noticed on the afl website for the Melbourne Hawthorn preview that Sylvia was listed as 1 week. He could be the difference of he could get up for it.

Not sure why you think they were made up 45. I am under the impression that clubs are required to release their squads (enough players to fill all positions including emergencies) 3 days prior to the game, then finalise their teams 2 days before the game, and obviously submitting their final team sheet 45 minutes before the game (I think). Under no circumstances can the team include players that aren't in the initial squad, otherwise the get hefty fines.

I may be incorrect in the above timelines, and am happy for someone to confirm otherwise, but to say that The Footy Show made a team up is ridiculous.

Squads are released at 5pm Thursday, unless your game is on Thursday, for which it is released at 5pm Wednesday.

Not so ridiculous after all.

Don't the squads need to get released before the team? There is a difference (ie. Squads will be released this afternoon at 5pm for teams playing on Sunday. Teams playing on Friday and Saturday will release their teams at 5pm tonight).

If it is only different this week because of the Thursday game, why do teams that are playing on Sunday need to release their squads on the Thursday?

Regardless of what was released and its validity, was something put on the screen for melbourne vs hawthorn?

Yes Pringle, showed an extended bench that included Trengove, Scully and Strauss. Couldn't tell you much more as I was watching it at about 12:30am - TFS is delayed in Qld.

To support my stance, Spencer was listed on the bench...(cue Elevation) and the teams haven't been released yet. That's why I thought it. I don't see it as being ridiculous.

There is neither a deadline for preliminary 'squads' this far ahead of games, nor does Channel 9 make up the squads they show when their broadcast is shown early in the week.

The clubs submit a sort of draft squad purely for the benefit of The Footy Show which they are in no way obligated to maintain. What you saw last night will be indicative of what we will see at 5pm tonight but last night's version is entirely unofficial insofar as any number of changes may be made.

This is exactly the same situation as what we see every year when TFS shows the extended 'squads' for the QB game on the Thursday night broadcast.

Strauss WILL play.

I have never once seen a kid included on an extended bench for what will be his first AFL game and not get in on gameday.

I've noticed this about 10 years ago and without fail the kid always plays.

If my eyes didn't deceive me, the Footy Show had McKenzie down for a spot on the half back flank.

I noticed McKenzie's name as well but I thought it was on the extended bench.
