I thought it would be a good idea to share some of our favourite/thought provoking stats throughout the summer as none of these will need to be updated for some time (and because uni is now finished).

I'll start with a few of my own:

Of all players eligible for the AFL rising star in 2009, Jack Grimes had the highest supercoach average (94.4) out of any of them. This was 10.1 (!) points higher than the next player, Daniel Rich.

In the final 3 years of his career, Matthew Whelan played in only two victories (over Brisbane and West Coast).

Since our last Grand Final, we have had 80 wins. Only 3 of those have been by 60 points or more - none of those teams were in top 8 at the time and none of them played finals that year. We have lost 22 by 60 or more in that same time (7 of those to teams that didn't play finals that year).

Only 19 players of our current primary list have beaten a Victorian side in the last two seasons.

Since I've been alive, 1987, the finals have looked somewhat like this:

Melbourne have appeared 12 times - playing 28 matches for 16 wins.

The only teams to make more appearances than us are Essendon, Hawthorn, Geelong, North Melbourne and West Coast - these teams have collectively won 11 Premierships. Indeed, we are one of only two teams to have played in a Grand Final in that time and not have won one.

Only 3 teams have more wins in finals matches than us - West Coast, Geelong and Brisbane.

Geelong have had the most finals wins in that time (20), appearances in Grand Finals (7) and West Coast have played the most finals matches (37) [not including draws]

Only the Dogs, Tigers and Dockers have not made a Grand Final.

Richmond have won 2 finals matches in this time.

Which West Coast win was it? 08 or 09?

'08.

He missed our wins in '07 and '09. The last Victorian team he beat was St Kilda in the Elimination Final of '06 - a game he, of course, went off early because of an injury. The last complete Victorian win he has was round 20, 2006 against the Roos when Neita tore it up.

Cale Morton is the first person younger than me to play for Melbourne.

Melbourne's biggest loss last year was 66 points

No one of my age or name has ever played for MFC

Melbourne is the only team called the Demons ever to win a VFL Grand Final

Collingwood is the only AFL club not to have a supporter with an IQ over 100

A player by the name of 45hotgod15 played for Melbourne reserves in the early 30's

Not a relevant stat but.....

From 1955 to 1964 the club won 140 home and away games. By todays standard 22 game season, that is the equivalent of averaging 17 wins and 5 losses a season for 10 years.

From 1965 to 1986 the club won 147 home and away games. Thats an average of just under 7 wins a season for 22 years.

Ok, next.....

The most successful club since 1926 is Melbourne with 11 premierships. (equal with Carlton).

Betweeen 2000 and 2006 (inclusive), Melbourne was the best performed Victorian team in terms of finals appearances (equal with Essendon). We only missed out in 2001 and 2003.

Carlton did not play in a grand final this decade - only the second time this has happened since 1900

Liam Jurrah had the highest average goals per game in 2009 for the Mfc.

Three teams did not lose by more than 50 points in 2009 - Geelong, St.Kilda & Bulldogs. Arguably the best 3 sides for 2009.

Our two new draft picks have more in common than being the first two players drafted.

They both have a sister named Jess.

Also, interestingly the last time Richmond had a draft pick No.3 was way back in 1999. They selected Aaron Fiora. The club that followed them was Fremantle with pick 4. They selected Matthew Pavlich.

This year Richmond's pick 3 has netted Dustin Martin. The club that followed is indeed Fremantle with pick 4 again, 10 years on. They selected Anthony Morabito.

Will history be so unkind to Richmond and repeat itself ?
