brock mclean

Given a full preseason, which McLean has had issues with over the past few years, he will appear to be another player. And consequently become a vital cog in our hunt for a premiership

I'm unconvinced about Mclean. He showed a fair bit of 'potential' in '06 but has not produced consistently since then. Part of that has been down to injuries and long recoveries. Maybe part is down to poor preseasons due to injuries. At times he has been our only clearance player. BUT I'd have Moloney ahead of him on current form and Jones/Junior are more use in different positions around the ground. If we get burgoyne and two more mids in this years' draft coupled with the improvement in grimes and one of strauss/blease developing well, then where does mclean play?

On current form he will struggle to be best 22 by the end of next year. I would not be unhappy if we traded him but I doubt it will happen as so few trades really do.

quite happyto be silly if thats all it will take ;)

I'll apologise when McLean gets 28 touches, 7 clearances, 6 tackles, and 2 goals when he's up against a quality team at a venue other than the MCG.

ill second that

He got 24 touches, 6 clearances, 8 tackles, and an assist against Essendon at the Dome.

He has been a lot better than the perception, and I suspect his Bluey results will reflect that.

Well we play most of the quality teams at the G so that leaves him only a small amount of games to do that.

Last year he had finished a close 2nd in our B & F playing just over half a season.

v Geelong at Skilled 30 Disposals 3 tackles

v Haw 29 Disposlas 7 tackles

v Coll 36 Disposals 3 tackles and a goal

2009

v Dogs 36 touches, 6 tackles and a goal

v Crows 29 touches, 8 tackles and a goal

v Ess 24 touches, 8 tackles

Just some examples there. Didn't include any of the non-finals sides either ie. our few wins

He was slower this year no doubt and didn't play his best football. He will put in a pre-season and be so much better for it.

Short memories people, very short memories.

100% correct.

He had 6 clearances or more 6 times this year, had 6 tackles or more 6 times. Goalkicking is one area I've already said he needs to improve, but I can't believe the whinging going on about Mclean on this site.

He's also had 24 touches or more 9 times this year. Talk about a whipping boy.

Moloney has had 24 or more 12 times this year, from two extra games, 6 clearances or more 4 times and 6 tackles or more 5 times. Both players have kicked 7 goals.

Now I'm not saying Mclean has been better than Moloney, as I think he's had a very good season, but I just don't see why so many are having a go at Mclean.

There is a report in the Australian that Brock might be tempted into changing clubs. Can anyone with inside knowledge confirm/deny this, or at least shed some light on it?

"Port Adelaide's Shaun Burgoyne could be on the move. Melbourne's Aaron Davey remains unsigned and out-of-contract teammate Brock McLean is understood to be tempted to move on"

if this is true, it's very bad news.

is there a link?

There is one line on him so I wouldn't take it to seriously just yet. Even if he wants to go the way trade week is he will still probley stay. The article is about the draft and mentions a few possible players up for trade or who wants to be traded.

here is the link Article

It is right down the bottom.

Sort of reminds me of a Sylvia trade (though Sylvia is fast becomming more important).

Other clubs would be reluctant to offer a decent enough pick to make it worth our while.

The fact remains that in all reality Brocky as our 'premier' midfielder ( supposedly ) ought to be capable of tearing open games . He doesnt really. often equits himself quite respectfully but not to the point many would feel he ought to be imposing himself.

He could fit into another team where he is less in the limelight ..if so id wish him well.

And with Grimes, Scully, Sylvia, Moloney, Blease he will not have not be our premier midfielder and will be able to play less in the limelight.

And with Grimes, Scully, Sylvia, Moloney, Blease he will not have not be our premier midfielder and will be able to play less in the limelight.

That has occurred to me. But then you sort of have the conundrum where he is exacting a very decent salry for not quite holding up the role hes supposed to fill.. In a sense the kids would be covering his butt !!.. Do we as a club deserve a better return.??

devils advocacy I appreciate..but alas..its there to be asked.

Fair questions.

But at the moment we're battling to pay 92.5% it's not really a problem IMO. In a few years when they kids ask for more money we can reassess. However I'm not sure it's as big a problem as people make out.

If the offer was right I think we should take it he might struggle to get into the best 22 should we grab two good mids but I'm not sure we will get what we think he is worth.

I can't remmber how many games Brock was tagged in this year. Someone might watch the games closer than me and remember better ?

I do remember Ling tagging him against Geelong though. Which to me means Thompson thinks he is our most dangerous midfielder.

Hard bodies is what we are going to need the next couple of years with all our youngsters getting there chance, no way id trade out one of our hardest.

You are missing the one name that will be the focus of midfield tags against every team we play - Aaron Davey.

Opposition sides will only put more time into him, and it should allow others to shine, hopefully.

Good spot, only serves to further my point.

Would like to see Davey grow his role next year though.

100% correct.

I think you'll find that most of the ppl targeting him are the same ones that were fooled into thinking he was the next instant captain and saviour of the club a couple of years ago, and now they feel let down so they are venting their frustrations.

Just like taste, there's no accounting for intelligence.

I'd rather wait til he is fully fit before I make judgements.

And what is wrong with him playing a lesser role to aplomb? a la Enright or James Kelly at Geelong?

Imo we need players like this

It's pretty simple.

2006: was an extremely effective player and smashed the Saints in an Elimination Final.

2007: Broken foot in Rd 1 which ruined the rest of the year. Came back later and carried injury through next preseason

2008: Limited preparation with knee soreness and then broke his ankle mid season which he also carried through to next preseason.

2009: Worst preseason of his career. Unable to get the hard KMs into his legs and unable to do sprint work or kicking. A major problem for someone who needs a large tank to get to as many contests as possible.

I had hoped he would play better this year but after I viewed him at training in March I knew he was going to struggle to live up to his own standards. For me, this year was a re-building year for Brock. A chance to prove that he can play at least a majority of the year and get in tune with the game plan and the speed of the game. Mission accomplished. Now he needs rest and get through the preseason to ensure he can run out games and improve his speed/movement.
