Position: Inside/Outside Midfielder

History: Tom Scully plays for Dandenong Stingrays and is the current captain of Victoria Metro in the Under 18 Championship. He has got All-Australian Honours twice in the Under-18s. An AIS-AFL graduate from Berwick, Scully probably would have been drafted last year if he was old enough. Tom Scully was awarded the Jack Collins-Alan Schwab Scholarship back in 2008.

This 182cm left footer is perhaps a little bit shorter than he'd like but is definitely determined to be a good player. He doesn’t party or drink alcohol, something that I certainly didn’t do when I was 18. He positively exudes professionalism on and off the field. He is also a very good interview which AFL recruiters like because it means the prospect has a good head on their shoulders and can deal with the media.

Scully is a very elite runner, he runs a 3km time trial in 9min 27sec, which is pretty special for a footballer. He is very well-respected by his team mates which is represented by his captaincy of Vic Metro. Scully is undoubtedly favourite to go number one in the 2009 AFL Draft.

Scully is reportedly a ready-made player and his body should be ready for round one just like Daniel Rich who was drafted in 2008. Tom Scully has a fantastic work-ethic and goes at the ball hard. He seems to know where the ball is going before others do; he reads the play exceptionally well for a young player. He also has good balance and radiates natural flair.

Scully is ranked second in the Under-18 league for disposals, fifth for contested possessions, sixth for uncontested possessions, first for handballs and third for clearances. This weight of numbers pushes him even further towards a likely number one selection. He is let down a little by how little he kicks and by his effectiveness when kicking. He also doesn’t kick as many goals as other midfielders and because of Geelong’s success this is expected of more and more midfielders.

This year’s last-placed team would be crazy not to take him at number one if they get that selection even if they need a forward, they can trade for a forward when they need one.

im VERY VERY excited about Tom being a Dee! :)

He needs to pump some iron

He needs to pump some iron

I'll say he does. AND eat his spinach.

He currently has the build of Cale Morton with an eating disorder.

But in a couple of years he'll be, dare I say it, the spitting image of... Benny Cousins.

A physical specimen.

Doubt it, theres something freaky about the way Ben Cousins is so ripped.

Uhh.. its cos he's fanatical about his fitness.

I know you're not insinuating otherwise, because that would make you an idiot.

What you first notice when watching Scully is his non stop running

He has the slickest hand disposal i have seen on any 17 year old

He reads the play very well like all ball magnets

Seems always interested in getting the ball to the teams advantage

No suprise to me he is touted #1 choice

Not much to say on this thread, is there?

What are the chances of taking Trengove/Butcher at Pick 1 to take the pressure off Scully?? Doesnt really make a difference, does it? :P

He would have Cale covered.

No im not suggesting that.

Im just saying im a young kid and i often go gym with exasperation to one day look like ben, the pics ive seen of him his arms are just soo ripped...

Once again, its cos he is fanatical, well-educated in this area and lives in a gym.

I'd imagine he'd almost have OCD in terms of his fitness.

According to the footy show...Scully is coming to Melb...it's a done deal...he might be in the number 3 (ex gary lyon)

Give him 31.

Trengove 3.

I don't believe so, poor kid.

He has the slickest hand disposal i have seen on any 17 year old

That's the thing I noticed when seeing him play live. He always seems to get the ball off and in that respect only, reminds me of Diesel Williams.

Give him the number 3 and Trengrove 31

everyone is seeming to make the call on Bartram making way with the number 3 pretty quickly...

It was an off the cuff remark from Hutchy that he could get the number three given Gary Lyon was sitting opposite him. I doubt Hutchy even knows who Clint Bartram is, let alone what number he wears...

Having said that, I think Clint will be borderline staying on the list come seasons end personally...

I'm sorry what? please explain....im lost here.

I don't think Bartram is contracted beyond this season and it would be a minor miracle for him to be re-signed IMO. Which is a shame, because he's a great kid who gives his all and has had a terrible year already.

Yeah... that and after Robbo, Whelan and Wheatley, Bartram would be the first I'd choose to go (based on who I believe to be still contracted)

Love his endeavour, but the rest of his game just isn't up to scratch unfortunately

Williams best asset was his awareness but no doubt skilled at handball

Was lucky enough to see Farmer and Cable in the 60,s but slickest i ever saw was Andrew Jarman

Our own Robert Flower was pretty good as well

  • DRAFT: The Next Generation

It was not long after the announcement that Melbourne's former number 1 draft pick Tom Scully was departing the club following 31 games and two relatively unremarkable seasons to join expansion team, the Greater Western Giants, on a six-year contract worth about $6 million, that a parody song based on Adele's hit "Someone Like You" surfaced on social media. The artist expressed lament over Scully's departure in song, culminating in the promise, "Never mind, we'll find someone like you," although I suspect that the undertone of bitterness in this version exceeded that of the original.

  • AFLW REPORT: Brisbane

A steamy Springfield evening set the stage for a blockbuster top-four clash between two AFLW heavyweights. Brisbane, the bookies’ favourites, hosted Melbourne at a heaving Brighton Homes Arena, with 5,022 fans packing in—the biggest crowd for a Melbourne game this season. It was the 11th meeting between these fierce rivals, with the Dees holding a narrow 6–4 edge. But while the Lions brought the chaos and roared loudest, the Demons aren’t done yet.
