Adam The God 30,740 Posted September 25, 2013 Posted September 25, 2013 Also saw Blue Jasmine last week, Woody Allen's latest one. Was excellent and Cate Blanchett will be hard done by if she doesn't get an Oscar nomination. I reckon she'll romp it home. Allen's leading ladies usually do alright come nomination time anyway. Is there a movie worth watching that really shows his talents? They all show his talents... What's Up Tiger Lilly (his first?) - he acquired the rights to a Japanese gangster flick and dubbed his own dialogue over it. Sleeper is a great film with a screamingly funny Jewish tailor robot. Bananas, Love and Death, Annie Hall, Small Time Crooks, Manhattan etc etc... they are all good and each quite different. One of my favourites though, a black and white mystery with Mia Farrow and John Malkovich, Shadows and Fog... great. Edited September 26, 2013 by hardtack Quote
Cards13 9,117 Posted September 26, 2013 Author Posted September 26, 2013 If you like "dark" movies check out Bronson. Bit of an intense little flick about an English prisoner who has been in solitary for if I recall close to 20 years. Quote
DemonFrog 1,359 Posted September 29, 2013 Posted September 29, 2013 Just watched Spartacus (as mentioned above) last night. It was not as good as the first two seasons. Quote
Little Richard 6,265 Posted September 30, 2013 Posted September 30, 2013 (edited) Saw 'Frances Ha' last night at the Nova in Carlton, pretty good! Not usually a fan of black and white films but this one was done pretty well. Bit of a chick flick but I was with the mrs, so it's slightly more acceptable... Pretty different from anything else I've seen. And it's the girlfriend, won't be married for a while yet! Quote

Eraserhead, Elephant Man, Sin City (apart from the odd splash of colour), The Man Who Wasn't There, Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid and so on... and of course all of those early films such as Wages of Fear, Cape Fear, Casablanca, Psycho and many many more...plus one particularly good psychological thriller The Snake Pit. 1 Quote

Some classic titles in there, must admit I haven't seen very many of them. Not usually a fan of black and white as it seems to test my attention span but maybe I've finally matured! Quote

Annie Hall takes the cake for me, although I also have a soft spot for Take the Money and Run. I'm currently re-reading The Complete Prose of Woody Allen, which takes in Without Feathers, Getting Even and Side Effects. If you're a Woody Allen fan, it's well worth a read. I actually find his writing funnier than his movies - as one reviewer notes on the blurb of this collection: "No 500-page book ever contained a laugh a line, but this one goes pretty close." 1 Quote

Is there a movie worth watching that really shows his talents? I was the same until I saw 'Hannah & Her Sisters'. I didn't get 'Annie Hall' the first two times I watched it. Wasn't for me. Haven't re-watched it since, but Hannah is just a brilliant film. 'Husbands & Wives' is the other classic. 'Love & Death' is awesome. 'Interiors' is dramatic, but if you like Bergman (as I do), you'll love it. Edited October 10, 2013 by AdamFarr Quote

Will probably watch it over the weekend. I concur in a sense RE: the uniqueness. Particularly true of his early films. Whereas, films like 'Manhattan' and 'Husbands & Wives' carry strong similarities (falling for a woman that are way too young for the male character) and he's pretty much always divorcing someone or being divorced. 'Shadows & Fog' is a great little homage, but I found it a little dull and I'm a big fan of German Expressionism. 'Sleeper' is amazing though. Quote

Bit of an intense little flick about an English prisoner who has been in solitary for if I recall close to 20 years. I like it, but I actually think we did it better with 'Chopper'. It has more style than 'Chopper' though. Very much trying to channel something out of Kubrick's 'A Clockwork Orange'. 1 Quote

Not usually a fan of black and white films but this one was done pretty well. Bit of a chick flick but I was with the mrs, so it's slightly more acceptable... 'Frances Ha' is a bizarre film. The first half is like a poorly acted, scripted and shot student film. The second half brings into focus the neurotic, self-important mutterings of its middle/upper class director. It reminded me of a poorer version of GIRLS, which I find has similar flaws. "Oh, it's so tough being a middle class white kid. How ever will I afford my $4,000 per week apartment? Don't live there then, [censored]." End rant. 1 Quote
