Barassi named No. 1

THE Melbourne Football Club is proud to announce that, in recognition of his ongoing contribution and standing in the game, Ron Barassi was today - during the Club's Family Day at Luna Park - named the Melbourne Football Club's No. 1 ticket holder for the next two years, appropriately recognising his place and his role as one of Melbourne’s greatest ever.

Ron Barassi has been at the heart of Melbourne since his senior debut in 1953, when he played the first of 204 games in the red and blue between 1953 and 1964. Determined and inspired in his leadership, forever giving a richness and high standing to the No. 31 guernsey, Barassi went on to display the same skills in the coaching arena, and is one of the central figures of the game. His record after leaving Melbourne confirmed this standing. He was appointed captain-coach of Carlton for the 1965 season, and coached the Blues to the 1968 and 1970 flags before retiring at the end of the 1971 season. Appointed coach of North for the 1973 season, he led them to their first two flags, in 1975 and 1977.

Barassi returned ‘home’ when he was appointed Melbourne coach in 1981. While he did not have the amazing success that was hoped for, his initiatives and dedication before his retirement as coach at the end of the 1985 season saw a solid foundation set for the late 1980s and early 1990s, including initiatives such as the ‘Irish Experiment’, which brought recruits such as Jim Stynes and Sean Wight to the Club during his tenure.

In 1993, another chapter was written in the Barassi coaching history when he took over that role at the Sydney Swans, before ultimately retiring at the end of the 1995 season. He continues to be recognised to this day as one of the pivotal figures of the competition, and was named as one of the Melbourne Football Club’s 150 Playing ‘Heroes’ in 2008 as part of the Club’s sesquicentenary, adding to a long roll call of honours including captaincy of the MFC Team of the Century, AFL and MFC Life Membership, and Legend status in both the AFL and MFC Halls of Fame.

Yeah, that's something that Ive often wondered about as well.

Personally, I hated having a B grade TV celebrity who may or ma not be funny, as our number 1 ticket holder.

Barassi is a great choice.

As for what it means, I believe its simply just a symbolic gesture, displaying to the football community that important people or at least people of some significance support the club.

I was actually going to start this thread a little while ago, but personally, I think our # 1 should be a man called David Bridie. David is a musician from Melbourne who you may know from bands, 'Not Drowning Waving' and 'My Friend The Chocolate Cake', and also a humanitarian. And of course along with his family, probably one of the biggest MFC members/supporters in the land. (there was actually a really good article on Real Footy a while ago)

Anyway, IMO this is the man for the role.

Agree Barrassi or Flower should be our #1 ticket holder, Sod the so called celebrities, give it to those who have given to the club, personally I'd rather it went to a waterboy/girl, boot studder or the like who has volunteered their time over 10+ years, they would be more deserving.
