I reckon our 2000 side would have beaten alot of premiership teams in the 90s, only Essendon were unstoppable and were never going to be beaten. Didn't we score 100 points or more in about 9 or 10 games in a row (It might have been less, but my mind tends to exaggerate these types of things). That is right Oxxx, Glen Jackovich was in superb form then and the great Ox didn't get a sniff. Stinga was hot to trot that year. We were up against it against WC but only one win from the GF. We were close. 2000, well we got there and had a chance, but the Bombers were too good.

Would it be fair to say that on occasions, the missing ingredient we've had for a flag is luck? I mean you look at the Geelong side this year, very few major injuries to key players, and it's something that frustrates the hell out of me. What about the great 2000 Bombers side? They had something like 2-3 changes through the whole season, how would they have done if they lost Lloyd and Hird for the year?

We've been effed in the A when it comes to have a chance at a premiership, always cut down when it was just within reach. '98 is a closest i've seen us come in terms of our quality compared with the competition, no way did Adelaide deserve that cup!

I'm just curious, since I missed out on the 90's having only been properly introduced to AFL around 2000 (lucky charm, I was), with all this hype about Franklin and so on, I had a look back and noticed that David Schwartz closed in on 3 goals a game, and managed 15 brownlow votes playing alongside Garry Lyon in 1994, which was also the season he played just his 50th game.

Then there were two (Three?) knee reconstructions in rapid succession, and he never got back to that level, is what I understand happened.

Anyone care to fill in some details? Some nostalgia to pass on, memories of the days when...

the Team didn't make the Finals. Carltank "won" the flag. (Their means of winning are always questionable) Neil Balme would have been so frustrated. The ox would have Rivalled Carey & Glen Jakovich, i have no doubt.

After being knocked out of the 1994 finals in unceremoniously in straight sets, Carlton (now Visybank) were set for revenge and monstered the competition savagely that year and finished 18 an4 at the end of the H&A four games clear of second.

That was the year that Jako, Tingay, Prymke and Charles also went down. So the wheels had well and truly fallen off and while the Ox was a factor there was more to it.

And I can attest that Visy had eight environmental management executives who all just happened (by chance) to play for Carlton.!

Wasn't it up at Albury at Lavington Oval? Or was that the third time he did it?

Yes the Second time was defanitely the 'G against bcoz i was sitting not far from his mum & she was Gutted like everyone. The whole 'G went Silent. I am pretty sure his first Injury was close to the Junction but hey it's a long time ago & i Just get [censored] off thinking about it.

But apart from that, yes the '87 prelim has stood the test of time as an incident that left scars hat will last a lifetime.

Broady's Tragedy did not happen on the Football Field. It was a completely separate incident. Could have happened to any of us.

I miss the Fire Engine as we all do but The 87 Prelim will always for me be the no 1 Football Tragedy..
