On the contrary, Aaron has a limited engine and is restricted on his ability to win the contested ball. He does have some wonderful skills elsewhere though as a finisher. I just dont think we can carry two Davey players of similar style with Wona and Maric in the one side.

That's my concern. Unless we have plans to move Aaron/Alwyn to a permanent rebounding defender role. And even then I'd be hugely concerned with accountability.

We're screaming out for guys who can contest the first possession inside fifty. That means someone who can lead and mark. Not necessarily a tall.... It could be a Maric/Sylvia type, and Wonna has shown poise and presence. But you can't rely on the Daveys to take grabs over Richo every week...

With what I have seen of Alwyn he is capable of being a very good follower and would play a differnt role to Aaron. Alwyn could be a real playmaker and would complement our in and under on-ballers.

I rate Alwyn really highly. Maybe I have over-rated him but I see him as an emerging star and possible B and F winner. I think we should pull out all stops to get him.

Agree with that.

Considering Warnock can't get a game for Freo surely they can't demand too much for him. At the moment he is probably worth our third round pick (34?). He'd have to have a good last 10 games to be worth much more.

That 1st pick in the PSD could still be used to lure an uncontracted player.

I would love Alywn.

However people need to realise, how much would you want for Aaron? Thats the measuring stick because the grass isn't greener, Aaron is the better Davey.

He may seem like a star but he really is just a goal sneak with a famous last name so I wouldn't give up the world for him, prefer to get excited about Wonaeamirri as our goal sneak.

Cameron Wood was in the same position as Warnock, and commanded a 1st round pick. Tall ruckman with potential are always in demand.

The PSD should be our 1st option in picking up Warnock, and if Freo are prepared to accept a 3rd round pick rather than getting nothing, all the better.

As for Alwyn Davey, high draft picks are at a premium this year. Apparently the talent pool runs deep, so to trade for any player coming off a knee reco seems ludicrous.

Would obviously be great to have him, but Essendon, who wouldn't be interested anyway, would be asking HIGH for that - something around a pick 8-10 I reckon, there's is no way we will be giving up our No.1 and after that its 17 and 18. So this sould not happen really. Not sure if this would fit into Bailey's vision for the next 3-5, either - I reckon we will not be trading our picks for established players but even doing more tade ourselves in order get more picks. Bailey seem to be all about player development. But my oath would be it good going to the footy knowing you are going to see both Daveys working in tandem! would be excellent from a marketing point of view

That uncontracted player could be Warnock!

Sandilands (with Johnson as back up) is thwarting his chances.

If Wood got pick 14 last year then Warnock is a bargain at pick 34...a steal. I dont think Freo are still doing dumb trade deals anymore.

I posted this elsewhere on the trade value of ruckman

Over recent years we have seen the following trade in ruckman:

2003: Street to WB for pick 20

2004: Ottens to Geeling for pick 12 and 16

2004: Jolly to Swans for pick 15

2006: Hacked culture sores like Gardiner and Everitt went for 3rd round picks.

Collingwood give up pick 14 for Wood is perfectly in line with history.

You can add PJ to that list as well.

If Warnock is not better than pick 34 I will be surprised. And I dont think MFC will be the only party vying for his services either. Hence I reckon that our best chance is to get him through the PSD. That would be good.

But it's a 100% dead certainty that Natainui will be at Melbourne next year so why would you need Warnock?

If a Melbourne supporter asks me I'll happily explain, but I can't be bothered educating an Essendon supporter.

I agree with that. Would be surprised if they settled for a third rounder though, but if the alternative is getting nothing, they might. It's nice to be the club that has the power in negotiations.

I don't buy the "he's not playing for Freo therefore he sucks" argument either. Historically we've seen that young rucks are often being held back by the "senior" ruckmen and will jump at the chance of becoming first ruck. With White in decline and none of PJ, Jamar or Meesen stamping their name on the job as yet, our first ruck position is up for grabs. That would be appealing to Warnock.

Read an article a few weeks back that said Warnock's manager was looking for a 500k p.a. contract.

Big bucks!

If we got Warnock I would expect he would be 1st ruck with White either retired or "traded" elsewhere. White must on close to that amount. And I would expect Warnock to be his replacement.

there is no way that Warnock could demand anywhere near what White earns. Warnock is still largely unproven at AFL level.

Agree. Cameron Wood is currently being kept out of the Collingwood side by Chris Bryan who I'm guessing is on less money.

It is like signing up Robert Warnock only to have him kept out the side by the good form of Jamar!

$500,000 is way too much, White has probably earned it based on 11 years of service. Imagine if we signed Meesen up for that much!

I think its a case of a Club like Collingwood paying a draft pick for a player who is very raw. Lets not forget Collingwood have Fraser rucking as well.

Contract payments should be dictated on a mix performance to date or expected performance over the contract period. Years of service are not a reasonable basis for contract determination. White would be on close to 500k but is not providing anywhere near that value.

Warnock has shown himself to be capable in the limited game time he has. He is a far better proposition than Wood. He will not get game time of any note at Freo while Sandilands is there. I doubt Jamar would keep Warnock out of the team.

Meesen was a speculative punt (That's not going well ATM). Warnock will be a targeted acquisition with more proven attributes than Meesen.

are you saying that he is worth 500k pa? I would be stunned if a 15 game player got that.

The knee reco is a bit of a worry and I wouldn't want to give a top 30 pick, and Essendon won't want to trade him, so I don't see much happening there.

I'm sure David Rhodan is a fine example of giving a bloke an opportunity after dodgy knees!

He will be close to that. Given our chronic ruck problem and poor stocks, we need to secure a long term solution to our ruck problems. Warnock presently provides that. We will need to work hard to secure him whether we trade for him or get him though the PSD.

I think the club will make a call at the end of the season to have a crack at warnock or select naitanui if we are in a position to do so. I personally would be happy to get nicknat particularly if we would have to pay so much and trade too hard for a second hand unproven ruckman.

We could then concentrate on trying to nab prismall or other uncontracted players in the PSD. I don't know if Davey falls into this category.

Won't be much hard work to do if we offer $500,000, don't think anyone else will offer that much. Hopefully he shouts his brother a few dinners who won't even be on a fifth of that.

MFC may have to bargain hard to get him against other Clubs. MFC is not an attractive proposition as a Club. If we get him for a good price we should pay his brother a spotters fee. B)

NitNat will not be ready to ruck in year 1 and its not clear that he not more of an athletic Adam Goodes. Warnock is a ruckman and we should be talking to him now. I dont think its a choice between the two. Warnock is out of contract ths year.

Unless you can specifically cook it with a specific player, I would not sit on your backside waiting for the PSD to throw up any gems. Typically it doesnt. The guys you think will come to terms with their club and the PSD will be full of players who are NQR and/or have significant ???s beside their names.

how do we recruit other than via the PSD or the draft? why would we trade so hard and pay so much money for warnock if we get nicknat even if he takes a year to develop. I doubt we will get both.

in saying that the psd is full of players who are nqr you are obviously discounting warnock from this group. what about other very good uncontracted players who might fit this bill such as prismall. the way i see it if one of these very good uncontracted players became available we would need to make a decision which one to chase. If we got nicknat I would suggest we would have other priorities besides another ruckman ie KPP or pacy on baller. no good clogging up our list not to mention salary cap with ruckmen.

Why not we could? You are assuming that Niknat is a ruckman. By the reports on him, he is more a tall running midfielder in the Goodes mould. But he is raw while Warnock has had 2 to 3 years in the system. We still need a ruck. We can still get both.

You did not read the first sentence of the paragraph "Unless you can cook it ........".

Do the sums over the past 10 years, how many good uncontracted players fall into the PSD? Very very few.

As I said Niknat could be an extraordinary talent that is not necessarily a ruckman. He could be the running on baller. Dont typecast. We would hardly be clogging our list. White's expensive contract expires this year. How much will you pay him? And we would not be paying Meesen and Jamar much so they will go in a year. I want quality talls not quantity. We lack them in spades
