Question on our possible draft selections

Featured Replies

Is it true under the current rules that if we only win one more game for the season (Which means we win 7 games in 2 years) we will get a priority pick before round 1 of the draft, in essence giving us picks 1 and 2?

No, you have to win no more than 4 and a half wins in either season, so you could not win 8 game one year, 1 the next and qualify.

We CANNOT get a priority pick prior to the 1st round this year as we won too many games last season.

It's not 4 & 1/2 wins CD84, 4 & 1/2 = 18pts.............16.5pts = not more than 4 wins in a season. :)

So many seem confused by such a simple rule.

Two consecutive years of less than 5 wins gains a priority pick before the first round. However, one year with less than 5 wins gains a priority pick prior to the second round. So we can still gain a pp, but it will be before the second round, but still valuable as it will be top 20.

VERY underrated fact on demonland and elsewhere... people are so keen to get a priority AND early first rounder that they neglect the fact that we could potentially get picks 1, 17 and 18... pretty sensational. If we could SOMEHOW wangle another pick in the teens or under ten, then another in the early 20s... we'll be doing almost EXACTLY what the Hawks did... I bet that got peoples' attention.

Another side-note with tomorrows match. The Toigs have won 3 and drawn one. They beat us, then they and Carlton are both no longer eligible for a priority pick this year... importantly BEFORE the first round.

Now you may say that the Tiges look likely to win another game this year, but remember last year when Carlton were 4 and 7 at this stage? They didn't win any more.

Different situation of course... Coach/list situation are completely different, but still, it gives one a moment's pause.

Richmond have actually looked pretty good this year and have their core group of players up and running.

Carlton lost Stevens and had a considerably younger/worse list

'Hannabal', your helping the people stay confused. It's NOT 5 wins at all...5 wins = 20pts. you can not get a priority pick with more points accumulated than 16.5pts.........This is meant to mean ( not greater than 4 wins).............

AFL revamps priority pick system

The AFL has been forced to make another change to its priority draft pick laws after accepting that under-performing teams were getting too much of an advantage.

Under the current laws, any team finishing with five or fewer wins gains one extra draft pick before the start of the first round of the draft. (Past)

Under the new laws, a team finishing with four or fewer wins will get an extra pick, but only after the first round of the draft.

However, if a team finishes with four or fewer wins for two consecutive years, it will gain a pick at the start of the draft as is the case under the current system.

Does anyone know if we qualify for a PP pick this year and also next season will the pick be before the new team's selections?

Do the laws specify points rather than say four or fewer wins? A draw is not a win so the tigs technically have won 3 games. Another 2 wins will see them miss a priority this year. I think they are a monty for two more wins.

I said less than 5 wins, but I see your point. Confusing though ? Only if you're stupid.

Oh yes, I see what you mean.

Keep in mind 4 wins and a draw also disqualifiies. 3 wins and 2 draws ( however unlikely ) doesnt. This is where the notion of 16.5 points comes in. Its un ambiguous.

Its not wins..its points :)
