With Siddle unlikely, and Hilfenhaus still out, a pace spot opens up. If the selectors are desperate to ensure we win, they should pick Stuart Clark. But if they want to choose someone with an eye to the future, they should pick Clint Mackay.

My team for Perth:

Watson

Katich (subject to fitness)

Ponting

Hussey

Clarke

North

Haddin

McDonald

Johnson

Mackay

Bollinger

My team: -

Watson

Hughes (Katich if fit)

Ponting

Hussey

Clarke

North

Haddin

McDonald

Johnson

Bollinger

Mackay

Tait shouldn't have retired.

Interesting to Read Rodney Hogg's Coment in today's Hun...I totally agree, it is time for Ponting to go as captain/

He is a great Batsmen & fielder but his captaincy record particulairly when fielding is ordinary.

In 4 years time i want Australia to win the Ashes over there. Now is the time to start planning,

we have the Talent in this country to once again have the Number 1 side on the Planet.

Playing a bunch of 35 year olds who will be 39 in for years time is not the answer-enough of the Boys club....

Read the article..Rodney makes some very interesting points....

Ponting could well be Captain in 2013 for the Ashes.

Did you see the stats for fielding first a few pages back? Reckon you'd be interested in them.

Yes i read that with great interest actually-keep that stuff handy as i am sure people will want to revisit those in years to come.

Doesn't change my position on Hogg's article though. Australia's Test side has stagnated, and with the amount of talent in the country there is no reason for it.

For the sake of the Long Term Side, i really hope the Windies win the last Test, & the Pakistani's give us a real fright, otherwise the selectors will continue to do nothing. I want to beat those Poms over there in 4 years.....

So you are ready for a 3rd consecutive loss over there are you?? Cause i am not.

Of course not. We should have won that series. You can't put that down to Ponting. Alot of the performances left alot to be desired.

By the way, can you explain this sentence of yours ?

I guess that's Ponting fault too.

We have come off the back of the retirements of extraordinary talents like Warne, McGrath, Gilchrist, Hayden and Langer and what have we replaced them with and what is there within Australian cricket to replace them? Capable cricketers but they are not of that calibre. In fact we dont have a front line spinner at all. Our batting at No 4 has been ordinary and Hussey should not see Test matches past Christmas. But who is staking their claims for for those spots.

Why are the selectors continuing to play Hussey? Makes no sense at all.

I am agreeing with Hogg's article, and i bet my house i am not the only one.

There are better cricketers in this country than the selectors are giving credit-now is the time to be Bold not conservative as if we draw a series against the Windie & even lose to the Paki's nobody will ultimately care.

That was a Typo error, i concur it was rather cryptic

Said to my friends on the trip that Gayle would make 150, happy with that one.

Very enjoyable match. The 'beer' on offer - not so enjoyable.

Spied Neita, Febey, Ward (i think) and a number of the old guard relaxing down from the pavillion.

Cryptic ? So his captaincy and fielding is both "great" and "ordinary". Is that sitting on the fence, or what ? Which is it ?

Ponting's Batting & Fielding are great-no arguement.

His Captaincy in the Field particularly is cod ordinary...I agree with Hogg's article...

Iain O'Brian - 5-4-3-4

Wow. Pakis 5-51

Their scorecard reads 44*, 9, 6, 0, 0, 0. 3 consecutive ducks from the middle order.

They need Younis Khan back so badly. And he's not in the squad to tour Australia.

Mind you, they way we've been bowling to the Windies, there's no stopping the Pakistanis from finding some form here.

It was great bowling.

Southee and Martin squander the new ball that was moving off just short of length. They repeatedly overpitched.

O'Brian comes on and bowls just short of length on or about off peg with the seam high and bang look what happens.

Good on him.

Mind you it does not bode well for Pakistan. Both openers do play away from their pads too much. The lack Younis's class.

Can't say I agree RR, I thought it was decent bowling but most of the shots were so unnecesary as to be laughable. He hardly bowled a ball that wouldve hit the stumps and should have been treated accordingly with patient batting. Yousuf's dismissal as a case in point

I take it he must be injured or something ? If so, what type of injury.

The first 10 overs were a little mundane. The wicket and the ball were doing a bit but they bowled too full at times. O'Brian bowled a better line than the first 2 and goty amply rewarded. Probably too much. But yes the batting ...the batting...

I think Younis had a falling out with Paki management and refused to tour. I dont believe he was injured.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
