I prefer to look at the upside.........strong body, good pace, one of the best tacklers in the team, and as courageous as the day is long! He is a solid mark, and when his confidence is up, he is an accurate and penetrating kick.

What was he thinking kicking it in the vicinity of Leon Davis yesterday lol! That said, TJ wasn't too good either... we've never really had a good kicker-in-er!

I know Belly personally and i see him once a week. Last week i asked him about the status of Juice and about the future of himself (Bell). He said that "I would love a crack up forward, maybe kick a few goals to get my confidence up, but i know that it is very unlikely to happen as bails thinks i'm needed up back". Later in our conversation i asked him what position he played in junior footy. He replied "I was drafted as a Midfielder/Forward, more a forward". Then i asked how many goals he kicked. He replied "i kicked quite a few, and in a state game (playing for South Australia) i kicked 5 goals and got best on ground".

So guys, what do you think. Maybe Belly, after his recent poor performances should have a go as a Forward Flanker in the absence of Robbo. With his strong body and strong hands he could be a great option.

well wudn't hurt to try him as a forward! put jace bode in bells position for the est of the year and put bell on a forward flank.

I love Belly's endeavour, but his decision-making is often disgraceful and he has absolutely no peripheral vision. I really hope the guy can turn the corner because he had a really solid year last year.

I noticed his whole demenour changed when moved further up the ground against the Lions and have been saying ever since that he needs to be played in the middle or across half forward. He seemed far more relaxed and suddenly was executing his foot skills so much better. Please, please Bails - give the kid a break and release him from the backline.

Perhaps switch Sylvia down back like he was several weeks ago and did very well.

With our forward line woes, I think moving him up there has merit, if only for him to be given a new challenge. It's a tough year to play in defence, and his form is down.

It would be great if any of Petterd, Grimes, Buckley, Bode, or Chris Johnson could shoulder some of the load running the ball out of defence. It's a shame we're having to swap between an out-of-form Bell and a pinch-hitting Sylvia or Green to help out Wheatley and Bruce.

bode? too small.

frawley? too tall.

buckley? not a backman. not strong enough.

CJ? at the moment, perhaps. the only reason is that his role has changed. last year CJ couldnt have filled bellys role (even the way CJ is playing now), which is similar to wheatlys role.

i think this is one of the main problems with bells game this year. he is out of sorts, out of form and struggling. but he is not allowed to play the role he excelled at last year, which was the mid sized defender.

last year he got didak. who did he get this year? he is now being asked to provide run and be an attacking player, whereas last year he was a mid sized defender spoiling the the strong marking of players like williams and didak, who are too quick for the talls.

he plays his best when he can use his speed and height to spoil the ball, and restrict these types of players in the D50. playing this role he can also provide some run and rebound. but atm he is being asked to be the main instigator of that run and rebound, especially with green playing up forward a lot this week.

his kicking is ok. his handballing is subpar. the biggest problem is that he doesnt clear the area with handballs he just knocks it out, normally to an opposition. getting run down from behind often indicates teammates arent talking to him.

but seriously, he has cost goals by getting caught, but who have his direct opponents been and how many goals have they been kicking. i think he is getting lost.

But plenty of good solid players have good years followed by off-form ones. Drop him to the twos, get him to find some form, play CJ or whoever to see if he has what it takes...

We whinge and moan about players never playing well. Bell has actually shown for what is tantamount to a full year that he's made the grade... we have a list chock full of guys who have had years in the system and never been good enough to play a whole season and play it well. Jamar, CJ, Newton... but we still love them and don't hurl abuse at them.

For the record I saw Bell manning up Medhurst a lot of the day and he didn't have as much influence as he has had in other games this year. Also, when kicking in did you see ANYONE make a definitive lead? In the last quarter we were atrocious in our set-up.

my point was that bells role is not the sweeper. its not the loose possessions. yes he should provide run, but he is primarily there to stop his man, and he does that well. i dont back bode or cj to stop the players bell can stop. frawley isnt as fast as bell and doesnt look to have the closing speed to play on the small uick leading players. wheatly plays his best ooty when unaccountable for the opposition, getting the ball and kicking long. and carroll, garland, rivers and warnock are fighting for the 3 tall positions. wheelan isnt on the park, but he competes more lcosely with bell than any of the others you have mentioned.

u say whelan is a better chance than any, when he is the smallest of the lot. bode is about 4-5cm smaller than bell. and i think ur grossly overrating bells speed and agility, when frawley would be the same if not better.

As the people who are in the know keep saying, he's no star, but then where is it written that he has to be? He's a late first round pick... no-one was expecting him to dominate. A Wheatley-like career would be a good return...
