  1. I’ve watched about 4 and 1/2 minutes of him, not doubt he turns the ball over on occasions, all players do. I’m guilty of using the word continually, I’m not going to start every sentence with “could be” or “has the potential” just to safeguard myself against doting wordsmiths. Put it this way, you could put any players highlights of passes together that played for us last season and it wouldn’t look half as good.
  2. Is there a player currently playing at our club in any position that can continually nail passes like he does? Hitting up teammates in heavy traffic and/or putting them into space.
  3. If that is the case surely it’s been that way all along then? The only way i could see it being the opposite is if someone had copped a head knock.
  4. Post 340 : Pennant St Dee “He’s better than Natanui below his knees, more of a footy brain and better by hand and foot. He doesn’t have Natanuis leap or explosiveness but I see a player with more mobility who covers more ground and can actually take contested marks on regular occasions.” Add to that his ability to tap the ball to advantage and his blind turns and breaking away from a stoppage before throwing the ball onto his boot blindly. Please remember only he will have the same time at AFL level as he does in under 18’s, none of the other potential draftee’s will. Post 356 : Mach5 “I don't see him as direct competition for Weideman (who is a 2nd forward) but I think Jackson would actually play as the number 1 key forward if deployed in the forward line. He has the size and presence to be the main target, create-a-contest type like a Tom Lynch, Tex, Walker, Travis Cloke, etc. I think this is part of the problem with T-Mac too, as he's more of a very good 3rd forward roaming far and wide, using his mobility to advantage. If we're expecting him to be number 1 KPF we're in trouble”. This was followed by Post 357 : DeeSpencer “Don't agree with that. Jackson has no goal kicking pedigree. His best use up forward would be creating contests at times but otherwise just staying out of the way by occupying a man. That's how West Coast, Brisbane etc other successful teams with 2 rucks play. On the other hand Tom McDonald put up 1.5 seasons of high quality key forward play. He had 2 excellent finals both with goal kicking and up the ground play and paired well with Weideman“ DeeSpencer’s comments make sense to me but before long Mach5 returns serve. Post 361 : Mach5 ”I don't think goal kicking has anything to do with it. It's about presenting as the number 1 target who continually makes a contest, competes to prevent opposition intercept marks and brings your crumbers into the game. It's not always about pure marks and goals”. Good to know that your no.1 forward isn’t required to kick goals, this is where people remind everybody that Collingwood were 90 seconds away from winning the GF with Cox. Post 383 : Binman “Buddy's talent was obvious but there were question marks. So much so they took roughly first. But do that draft now and everyone would take buddy in a heartbeat. Is jackson our buddy?”. I would of thought there are still some question marks hanging of over Jackson’s head, ability to take a pack mark and his kicking both in general play and set shots on goal. Will he be able to dominate at AFL like he can at under 18’s. Post 435 : Dr Evil “In terms of pure talent Jackson is the most talented player in this draft with the highest ceiling. I think it's a very easy choice at pick 3. there are Hayden youngs every year“. In previous years the most talented player generally comes in and has an impact straight away. So in short, he’s already got Natanui covered in a lot areas of his game, he can come in and play as our no.1 fwd, could potentially be our Buddy because his talent is so obvious that he is clearly the most talented player in this years draft. If he’s not going to dominate then I don’t know who will.
  5. I’d like to start by saying I love Angus and am a massive fan, I’m not put off him by his output this year for we’ve seen what he’s capable of. I was disappointed when his name was throw up at trade time, I actually think he’s done more to date than Petracca but that’s another discussion for another day. This also isn’t a retrospective should of / could of.... I just thought at the the time (from what I’d read and heard on the radio) that Roos was heavily into DeGoey. I would of thought the recruiters have been tracking these players for years and have a list of needs from the coaching department but ultimately the coach has the final say as he’s normally the first to go when the club isn’t performing. At the moment are we into Jackson as much as the media / draft commentators are? For many on here it’s a forgone conclusion, so far the interview that was posted on here last week Jackson, Young and someone (can’t remember) were all being considered at pick 3.
  6. When someone puts forward Young, Ash or Stephens suddenly all these questions come are asked.... : Picks up cheap kicks, won’t have that kind of time and space at AFL level, question mark over his disposal under pressure. Yet for some reason it’s an iron clad lock that Jackson will dominate the game. How many players already at our club, that have been in the system for years still struggle with kicking the footy, whether it be in general play or set shots on goal. The list is pretty big. How many players can use their kicking to put a teammate into space and set up attacking play. I mentioned earlier in the week to have a look at GWS and their ability to effortlessly move the ball from one to the other by elite precision kicking. Surely our need for quality ball users outweighs the need for a potentially great player in Jackson, and if Kemp is the next Bontempelli I’d be looking at him too before Jackson.
  7. I’m not giving up on Young until Luke Jackson’s name is called out or the club release something before next week stating their intentions.
  8. You make a good case, I should probably hold my fire until this time next week after we’ve seen where the cards have fallen. I mentioned earlier tonight that I still think that Jackson isn’t a lock at 3, we clearly have a strategy, I know that sounds like an obvious comment, but in recent years I feel our draft selections were influenced by outside noise. I don’t mind the look of Stephens and it will be interesting to see when Pickett goes. I think there’s still a surprise to come.
  9. I’m not initially a fan of this, would obviously love to know what they’re thinking. Stop diluting the talent.
  10. I don’t think it’s the done deal that many think it is. We made a preliminary two years ago, we brought in May to handle the big forwards, we still haven’t addressed our other need. Jackson might become a good player but he’s not going fix our disposal problem.
  11. Look at the Giants list as it stands now, they don’t want for much. If they get Jackson they would have to arguably have the best all round list bar Richmond. For them Jackson would be a pick for needs not necessarily best available. They just picked up Jacobs as a stop gap, their list is so talented they can afford to carry Jackson while he develops, we don’t have that luxury. I live in Sydney and watch a lot of GWS games on free to air, they can move the ball from one end to the other at will (obviously the GF being the exception) by foot and then put it out in front of one of their forwards. We can’t, we continually kill ourselves through turnovers from poor disposal and poor decision making. Just my thoughts and I know many won’t agree. As I mentioned in another thread I’d take Young and Ash at 8 if he’s there.
  12. Whilst I’m happy with the additions of Langdon and Tomlinson are we so naive to think we’re out of the woods now with our ball movement? Young and Ash for me.
  13. I don’t people are ignoring the possibility, a few posters have asked the question of is there any footage of him playing forward and having shots on goal.
  14. Article on the AFL website about Young. 30 seconds of footage of one of his trademark passes, worth a look.
  15. Is Young purely a half back, surely there’s scope for for him to play other positions. Our team lacks good users of the ball by foot, Young would not be surplus to our needs. I think it’s too early for Jackson to be described as “the caliber of Grundy and Gawn”. His highlights had him dominating the ruck but his disposal by foot wasn’t great. Would like to see some footage of him taking some big pack marks and his set shots on goal before using pick 3 on him. He doesn’t mind getting physical which is obviously a good thing. If he could dominate the fwd line then by all means but until then.... Considering where we finished in 2018 and then last year, I still think we need to use our picks on players that can kick. With our draw we should be playing finals but based on last year obviously nothing can be taken for granted. In another year if things were different I’d be all in for him but right now I don’t think we can afford the risk. I personally would take Young and Ash/Stephens.
  16. Needs to work on his set shots, yes he’s improved that area of his game slightly but he could of easily had a lot more to his name.
  17. He definitely has some good attributes and has a bit of X factor about him, but I wouldn’t personally take him unless there is a proven history of pack marking and ability to kick goals (accuracy and range). If he doesn’t have those skills now I would look to those that have other ready made skills that we need, kicking and speed.
  18. For anyone who might know, Jackson’s ability to take a pack mark, and his set shots on goal (accuracy and range). The answer to those two questions would go a long way to the decision being a yes or a no. A lot of people throwing around “upside” and “potential”, we’re still waiting for Petracca to live up to his.
  19. I’ve read comments along the lines of.... Hayden Young : “He’s a meat a potatoes kind of player“ Because we already have a team full of elite users of the ball by foot. Dylan Stephens : “His highlights look good but I can’t see him him getting that kind of time and space in the AFL” We have numerous players who continually miss easy set shots on goal or look to pass off rather than take the shots themselves. What if we applied that same logic to Jackson’s highlights....
  20. I don’t know about anyone else but I would of thought Petracca fits that summary better than anybody.
