Next Generation
If I was GCS I'd use points (assuming you can still combine trash picks) and then park him in the VFL for two years. If he does okay you can then trade him for a high second or low first. It's a variation of the original GWS draft and trade ploy. One problem is that Tasmania will take a lot of quality players. If we finish bottom 4 this year would we use our second round pick on KW?

PREGAME: Rd 08 vs West Coast
We had 3 tall forwards in AJ, JVR and Jefferson plus two rucks in Campbell and Verall. I do recall JVR marking on the wing but in the main JVR's marks were in the pocket (I think). AJ got a few almost dead in front but 2:5 let him down. Can't recall JVR rucking. If anything we now have too many talls/rucks at Casey. I'd prefer to see them rotated through the backline for experience rather than benched. Then again Kentfield was down back.

Time to go Goody?
Do you think Voss is safe after the weekend? If we win the next two Goodwin is probably safe for the year. Lose to the Eagles and .........

Time to go Goody?
This little snippet in the Age today had me raise my eyebrows. No one begrudges the senior coachesโ wages, which averaged about $750,000 per year in 2024, Given that it's an average there must be some coaches' on around $500k pa. The article is on underpaid and overworked Assistant Coaches. Well worth a read. https://www.theage.com.au/sport/afl/overworked-and-undervalued-inside-the-afl-s-coaching-crisis-20250424-p5lu3w.html

NON-MFC: Round 07
Are we seeing the end of the Swans' run or are GCS very good. GCS certainly had the corridor game working in Q3

Tom Fullarton
Ah the role of the second ruck. Solve that one and you'll win the lottery. Collingwood and others seem to have achieved a balance There's even a school that says hit out stats are irrelevant I have no idea these days

Tom Fullarton
Will he Weideman us with four good games mid 2026 and then a 3 year contract. I hope not. This should be his year if he is to make it.

The Basket Case that is......
They were the pioneers of what we now see as the AFL. Sunday games televised live revolutionised the game. Personally I think there's room for a second league a la the English soccer comps (perhaps with promotion and relegation to a third level league.) The VFL as linked to AFL can wither for all I care. Include a few country teams in Victoria and the Riverina and you could have a popular comp. Youtube gives cheap access to media coverage with camera and incidental costs being paid by Local Government. Ticket prices under $20 etc There's a model there but it won't be around for long as the secondary leagues gradually die

NON-MFC: Round 07
The last three weeks seem to have been never ending football. With Gather round, Easter and then Anzac Day it's easier to count the days when AFL was not on. For all that it doesn't seem to have impacted attendances but I'd love to see the TV ratings. Good showing in Canberra last night but can anyone tell me the cost of a seat in the stands? It seemed they were only 80% full compared to the standing areas which were packed.

Road to the Finals
Win the next two and you can start doing the sums

The Basket Case that is......
First step is for the AFL to come clean on what its aims are for the competition. My guess is that it's a training mechanism for AFL players at the lowest cost possible. For the non aligned clubs it's line ball but I suppose it has more historical kudos than the next step (down/up) in the local football hierarchy. There's a product... Coburg or Box Hill on a sunny day with a camp chair on the grass. It's as close to cricket on the village green as we come.

NON-MFC: Round 07
Took me a while to realise that JHF wasn't Superman and couldn't be at both ends of the ground at once. That being said they are both good players

NON-MFC: Round 07
To Kayo's credit the sound is now back on the 4k feed and the balance between commentary and crowd noise is very much improved And we have a game... score wise

NON-MFC: Round 07
You're not alone apparently Reportedly better on the 1080p feed on Ch 504

NON-MFC: Round 07
Port seem to have docked
-
NON-MFC: Round 07
Better than last weekends F1. They mixed the 4K sound feed such that you couldn't hear the commentary over the sound of the cars. Kayo are pointing to the broadcaster. The strange thing is that the sound was fine for those on 1080p

NON-MFC: Round 07
I assume Riciutto is in Adelaide but even he sounded "remote".
-
NON-MFC: Round 07
Strange sound mix on Kayo's coverage of the Port game. It's like the commentators are in a remote sound booth (which they probably are) but you would think they could do a better job mixing the crowd noise in

NON-MFC: Round 07
Saints returning to lower mid table form by the looks of things. Early days but the top 9 are pulling away from the rest

PREGAME: Rd 08 vs West Coast
We got massacred in the mid field. That's where the game will be won

NON-MFC: Round 07
I often wonder what they spend their money on. An extra couple of million each year into that evergrowing future fund will mean serious investment income in years to come. Reserved seat money we can only dream about and the list goes on

PREGAME: Rd 08 vs West Coast
For those who didn't watch Casey AJ kicked 2 goals 5 behinds. It should have been 5 goals two. Opposition was woeful but it's a reference point. I think we need to be more daring with our sub and make a tall the sub. Sharp rarely gives more than the player he replaces. With a tall we can manage May and Gawn a lot better

PREGAME: Rd 08 vs West Coast
We would have taken 4 AFL players to Perth as emergencies. These would have been the players on the cusp of selection. Perhaps a Monday night game or a Monday morning game (remembering most VFL listed players have work/study commitments) would be possible but then the emergencies don't get a break. The lack of a VFL round during Gather Round was abysmal though.

POSTGAME: Rd 07 vs Richmond
Brilliant I had to give it a bump

PREGAME: Rd 08 vs West Coast
In a perfect world we would have rested Max either last night or next week against the Eagles. It's time to think of 2026 and to play 2025 more in hope rather than any planned way to make finals. The Hawthorn match will pretty well decide our season. Being one for compromise I'd play Tom Campbell as sub. (Weather for Perth is looking warm) Win in the West and the slight pulse continues. JVR to return and Petty down back please. (It's the future). Not having a VFL game next week is a worry. I can understand that 4 emergencies go to Perth but there has to be a better way
