  1. Anyone else think that Eddie McGuire had something to do with this? #paranoidconspiracytheory
  2. Great summation Webber. To further add to his post, endurance training leads to a greater density of mitochondria in slow twitch fibres (type I). The mitochondria are factories in all cells that metabolise glucose into usable energy (Adenosine tri-phosphate or ATP) via oxidation. The greater the number of mitochondria allows a greater production of ATP to be supplied to the working muscles (as well as other organs). This of course is not the only factor that contributes to endurance capabilities. Some others include myoglobin (oxygen carrying structure in muscle cells) and capillary density surrounding each fibre. In resistance training, hypertrophy of muscle fibres and increased fluid in the fibre results in a reduction of mitochondrial, myoglobin and capillary density. Interestingly, some evidence suggests that resistance training can improve endurance performance. The hypothesis being that resistance training improves running economy via improved efficiency of motor units recruitment and increased tendon stiffness. Type 2B fibres have the greatest capacity for hypertrophy, at least in the early stages of training. Type 2B fibres characteristically have less myoglobin and mitochondria, but larger stores of ATP enzymes to produce fast contractions. As a consequence, they can produce fast powerful contractions but fatigue quickly with the absence of adequate oxygen supply resulting in lactic acid production. However, studies have shown that type 2B fibres are converted to type 2A fibres following resistance training. Type 2A fibres are more energy efficient and have a greater endurance capacity compared to type 2B. Another thing to remember is that while the percentage of fast and slow twitch fibres vary from person to person, it also varies from muscle to muscle. Praise be to science.
  3. enjoyable read during a barren summer... unsure why players (and fitness instuctors for that manner) waste time on bicep curls though.
  4. All good and well if you're in a position of power within the club. We are supporters and have no input in recruitment. If people feel the need to beat their head against a rock about what could have been then thats their choice. I'm choosing to move on and concern myself with the players we have on our list now and in the future.
  5. Not having a go at you monoccular, but I really dislike this expression. Hindsight is a pointless and futile exercise that achieves nothing. We need to be looking forwards, not backwards. Edit: It's not so much the expression but the frequent use of it on these forums, no point driving yourself crazy over things that have already happened.
  6. Fair call, it wouldn't make sense to make all these alterations to the veterans list only to scrap it altogether a few months later.... I shall remain hanging
  7. A further implication of this would be that a current veterans salary will fully come under the cap next year. The mimimum amount to be spent on the salary cap has also been raised to 95%. Doesn't leave a lot of wiggle room for contracts. Perhaps the AFL are trying to deter clubs from underpaying their players in an attempt to poach stars from rival clubs when free agency comes in?
  8. I thought opiates were the opiates for the masses,
  9. Nascent 1.2 Local progressive/rock band, awesome live Nascent 1.3 Bulb (Misha Mansoor) is an incredibly talented musician/producer. Puts alot of his stuff out there for free on soundclick and has a lot of time for fans. Someone did this mash up on youtube with a song from paramore. Works well I think.
  10. Nascent 1.0 This guy just flat out rocks acoustic, insanely talented. Nascent 1.1 Addictive canadian rock/metal/punk/progressive band that i've listened to for the past 4 months non stop.
  11. We actually would have only received pick 31 (Jackson Merrett) and pick 32 (Joel Hamling) as per the AFL's activation rules (see article). http://www.melbournefc.com.au/tabid/7415/default.aspx?newsid=123370 It was definitely the logical thing to hold onto the picks. If next year is as strong as it sounds then a few clubs will be looking to utilise their compensation picks as well. Perhaps we will see only one of ours used next year and bank the other to use from 2013 - 2015.
  12. That was my initial thought but i'm the journo's would be having an absolute field day with that slip if true. Perhaps he's intention was to say that his dad officially signed with GWS after he did, effectively dodging the question all together. Maybe a career in politics awaits him? Lol
  13. Thought has crossed my mind... along with displaying it at blacktowns facilities above the entrance. But that would require effort and for me to actually enter west sydney of which I have no desire. It has Barassi's signiture on the number 1 though so i'm leaning towards chooks idea of chemically removing the ink from the number 3.
  14. "It was after I was signed to the Giants that he was offered a deal. As you know the rest is history," Scully said. Reading this quote and taking it on face value, it appears that he is admitting he signed on last year. Perhaps his meaning was lost in translation from interview to print. Whatever the case i'm over this whole saga. Now I need to work out what to do with the signed jumper I have in my room.
  15. My understanding is that you can nominate to use your compensation pick in the year you acquire them but have to nominate by a certain date. Additionally, if a club chooses to use a compensatory pick in the same year, they will become an "end-of-round" pick. So if we decided to use say the mid-round pick, instead of getting pick 10 we would receive pick 19. Of course the extra selections allocated to GWS skews these numbers but you get the idea. Otherwise if the selections are "stocked" for use in subsequent years then they must be nominated before the start of the season (unsure on specific date) in which a club wishes to use them.
  16. Each team is required to make 3 deletions to the senior team list each year. However, I believe there is only a minimum requirement of 1 selection in the national draft as rookie upgrades can be included as a "selection." For example, if we had decided to upgrade Nicholson to the senior list (which I was a little suprised we didn't) then we would only have to use picks 36 and 52 as live picks with 54 allocated to upgrading Nicholson. Conversely, we could use picks 36 and 52, then pass on 54 to utilise a PSD selection although I fail to see any advantage in this.... unless we have come to an arangement with a pre-listed afl player that hasn't nominated for the national draft. I agree that Couch would most likely be a rookie selection if it all.
  17. Apoligies for the late notice but uni commitments have tied me up on sunday unfortunately. Will definately put my hand up next time round if the opportunity presents itself.
  18. Not 100% sure to be honest, i'm just going of this article when Trengove, Tapscott and Gawn also re-signed/extended their contracts http://www.melbournefc.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/7415/newsid/120703/default.aspx

    Pick 12

Grigg was a highly rated mid and seems to have fallen off peoples radar recently... Can anyone shed any light into his strengths and weakness and if he's worth having a look at?
  20. Thats what I thought we were going to do but we have already signed up Nicholson and Evans as rookies for next year. Maybe they're planning on upgrading juice?
  21. Well there you go... Would have been nice to pick up one of those picks but can't say i'm disappointed. We still have a good hand for future drafts or to possibly deal for an experienced player.
  22. I Agree, Kennedy would have to be something pretty special to pass up a reportedly star midfield prospect Is it a 2:00pm deadline? I was under the impression it was at 5. Strange the deal hasn't been done since it seemed to have been done and dusted last night.
  23. This article suggests that adelaide are still deciding between Kennedy and Crouch. If they do select Kennedy, it will be interesting to see where Crouch ends up going in next years draft. Of course adelaide still need to get the deal done 1st, just a little over 3hrs left now. Surely they have it wrapped up? http://www.afl.com.a...21/default.aspx
  24. I've always thought that he plays his best when he gets moved into the midfield, knows how to find the pill
