Flawed competition rewards mediocrity
3 groups of 6 would work better but the resistance to change is immense so the idea has an almost zero chance of even being talked about. With a 3 group system all the teams would still play each other once whilst the teams within each group would all play 2 games each against their group rivals. The winners & runners up from each group go through to the finals with the next 2 overall best performed teams (from any group) qualifying as well. And then seeded accordingly. The groups could change every year according to the strength of performance in the year prior. Or we leave it as it is now and put up with the flaws.

Round 23 Non MFC Games
You're right HB ... any margin of defeat means the Eagles drop to 4th. Which in turn would put us on their side of the finals draw if they in turn then lost to the Tigers in a qualifying final (the winner of 5th vs 8th plays the loser of 1st vs 4th) And if the Eagles do lose today that means that they can't be drawn against Richmond in a preliminary final. Same deal for us although we could (in theory) meet Richmond in week 2 of the finals or the GF. However ... if our game is drawn today we'd finish 7th and then play GWS in the first week of the finals (7th @ 6th) and then be on the other side of the finals draw ?

Monkey Business
Get well soon Wadda ... I had the flu a ways back and needed 2 doses of antibiotics. Yet the cough still lingers! The 90 day cough. I'm flat chat again tomorrow but will be tuning in via radio and hope to watch the 2nd half live. Confident of a win too ... we win at the coalface and then it's just a matter of controlling possession. Simple but effective but we have to win the stoppages. Each time our players are subjected to must-win games, we'll get better at it. So bring it on I say ... I like the team being tested.

A Day at the Races
Excellent point BM ... if one is to dip-out, better to do it with a class runner (especially at this time of year) My choice was in a benchmark 78 race and I've learnt that lesson. Was looking at Hiyaam closely but thought it needed the run but it did fly home. A watcher though. I really liked Avilius too even at the short odds - and it duly won in fine style ... Punters lament!

You really ride out these multi's Wadda ... I tend to set and forget and then check in after it's all done. But there again, my multi's tend to be overnight contests (soccer - weekend) or occasionally US sports where I'm at work when the games are being played (weekdays) I've never really got into AFL, NRL or suchlike previously ... SuperRugby is different but again, I'll purposely target the games played in South Africa and then set and forget. Good luck with your live multi's ... I've got 4 of our 5 bests in one multi and another 'spec' soccer in other games played later tonight & overnight. A tiny outlay to win k's. Wake up and win? Hope so! p.s. Man City had better get a move on!

Round 23 Non MFC Games
Yeah I edited my post with that info - such a tight race with percentage tight as well And who is to say Brisbane can't win by a few goals? But Richmond have never played the Hawks in a final and that still may not happen! And it's been 79 years since the Pies, Tigers & Demons all played in the same final series. 1939.

Round 23 Non MFC Games
Richmond vs Hawthorn in a final ... first time ever? That's unless West Coast lose by 3+ goals and drop to 4th.

A Day at the Races
A funny day at the races today ... had enough collects to save face but so many of the races were even affairs that I felt like I was guessing a lot. But I knew that going in so no complaints. The track bias at the Valley copped a bit of a caning from a few of the trainers too. Next weekend will be more clear-cut Wadda with 10 of 11 of the Group or Listed races being WFA, SW or SW+P races (Randwick 4, Caulfield 5 (1 Hcp Listed race), Morphettville 1, Belmont (1) ... including the $1Million Memsie Stakes of course.

A Day at the Races
My brain just won't work today (hits head against wall) ... fixed. I'm usually reasonably good on the run too. Age waits for no man hey Wadda ? Just as well you're here Best Bet Strike Rate 13: 6 - 2 - 2 Australian Group Races

A Day at the Races
And 'Don't Give a Damn' salutes. The horse was our very first Best Bet ... yours truly selected it and it won back then as well. Didn't pick it today but It's got to be a favourite of our's now. Got the trifecta with the horse winning today (albeit a small dividend) A win is a win though. It's a good honest horse that is very consistent.

A Day at the Races
Best Bet Strike Rate 13: 6 - 2 - 2 Australian Group Races Again, if one was to back all of our tips to win and then multi them up as well, you'd break even (or better) today. 5.00 - 5.50 was available for Danawi (late) I went down the trifecta path with all of our picks and ended up with a very similar result. Edit: Adjusted the best bet strike rate to the correct figures

A Day at the Races
@Dee Zephyr gets one up for the team with 'Danawi' ... well done DZ! Close at the line - real close. You hate losing by that sort of margin so the luck was on our side this time.

A Day at the Races
If the horse had have refused to jump outright today that would have been it according to the Stewards so it probably gets another chance. The connections may or may not press on ... although, apparently the horse has jumped out at its last 6 jump outs so they'd be in 2 minds. 'Graff' looks the goods ... beat a decent field with ease in the San Domenico. Kris Lees the trainer reckons that Graff is the best colt he has ever trained - Black Book.
-
A Day at the Races
The stewards have laid down some quite stringent rules that the horse has to pass so it might be the end. But who knows? The connections might keep pressing forward.

Round 23 Non MFC Games
I'm more into rivals-watch so the game tonight wasn't on the radar. Zero interest. The Cats aren't losing tomorrow so that's another no-watch ... so then it's twilight time but the Pies will almost certainly win so let's face it, we're playing for 5th spot on Sunday. But you never know. A win on Sunday probably means we'll probably play Geelong for the right to play the loser of 1st vs 4th ... which would be Hawks/Syd/Rich unless Collingwood find a way to lose tomorrow. Lose Sunday and we possibly finish 8th (if the Cats absolutely smash the Suns) but that would put us in the same scenario as is we finish 5th. So we're back to the 5th or 8th outcome - except we'd be the away side finish 8th. But does home or away matter if you're good enough to win anywhere?

NFL
Weird scoreline ... really weird in fact, Dappa. Obviously it is just a practice game so nothing to see here. But 5 zip to the Browns makes no sense at all. Ignore.

NFL
Thanks for the up Gorg. Rodgers loves the guy ... I even detect a bit of awe when A-Rod speaks of him. He is a rare talent and a future difference maker. He's already more than decent. We've got your blokes in week 8 at your house ... late arvo game so an 8.25am start. Day off beckons! ha ha I work for myself so it's really just a timing thing.
