Yup ... just saw that too. Looks like something is happening! Is it too much to see Roos, Ling, and Kennelly announced along with Walsh.
-
Really? Whilst I want Roos to be announced ASAP, I would be stoked if this (has it been confirmed?) was to announce Walsh, that means both of them are on board for next year. Massive get for the club if that was the case.
-
DD36 just doing his part to get the post count up on this thread!
-
Might be easier to say "See you all tomorrow at the presser!"
-
Cant be right, the shorts worn by the guy on the left aren't tight enough for Neil!
-
I wouldn't be opposed if it happened, I think I just assumed Voss would look to head back into the media (could take Roos place on the couch!) I think I would like to see Micky O, Ling, Tudor, George Stone etc as assistants, but I can't give you a reason why them over Voss...
-
Nice one, relevant not just cos of the song, but for the name of the band !!
-
Not just that PaulRB, but if you were ambitious you might also see that there is an opportunity for a succession plan which worked spectacularly well when Roos handed over to Longmire. Learn from one of the best in the business then take over the reins.

We seem to be in agreement here. The benefit of a PP should be focused on getting MFC competitive again quickly. To my perspective using that pick to grab an 18 yr old from the draft doesn't achieve that. Giving us a PP with the caveat that it needs to be traded out, or a mini-draft scenario where again we are to on trade that to other clubs for players not picks.. these are completely different, and could have an immediate impact. Can you imagine the possibilities if pick 1 in the draft was effectively an auction that any of the clubs could obtain?
-
Hmmm interesting if true. I'd like to know how exactly angst from other clubs is lessened if we get pick 3 instead of 1... still means we push every other club down the draft by a pick apart from GWS. If anything I would have thought that they could create a situation that is more palatable by forcing us to use the pick1 and trade with it, or create a mini-draft type of assistance.
-
Since when has it been relevant whether the other clubs have fault in this? .... perhaps it's their fault for beating us so often by so much.
-
It still doesn't seem to be taking into consideration the facts of how the season has gone. If we were under the old PP system we would have automatically been entited to an end of round pick last year, but automatically eligible to one this year (As would GWS incidentally) Even under the new system where the commission makes the call (Wikipedia if true) To allow for this situation, a formula has been developed that takes into account such factors as: premiership points that a club has received over a period of years (with greater weight to recent seasons), a club's percentage (points for/points against x 100) over a period of years (another indication of on-field competitiveness, with greater weight to recent seasons), any finals appearances that a club has made in recent seasons, any premierships that a club has won in recent seasons, and a club's injury rates in each relevant season. Pretty certain that each of these dot points would point to the fact that we have sucked for an extended period of time (irrespective of injuries) All of us want the club to work hard, get good culture, improve, win games and ultimately premierships, but pure facts on our season suggest that we need a PP for 2013.
-
I can't work out if it is pride or something else that makes people think like this. But our club DOES desperately need this. That is irrespective of whether we have stuffed picks in the past, not developed talent etc.... it's just a fact based on almost every statistic you can hope to look at for not just this year, but for the last 3-7 years. Statistically our club stinks in most areas you can think of, it's the 5th worst season in terms of wins in our clubs history, but flip it around and we suffered more losses this season than in any other season in our clubs history, and many of these were terrible losses (Av losing margin of 64pts!) We need this PP, and it needs to be Pick 1 and even that is unlikely to make a huge difference. Only concession I will make to the PP is that I would not be against the AFL putting a clause on this PP stating that it has to be used as part of a trade rather than just a straight selection of the draft, our club needs an immediate injection of talent from established players, not another 18yr old.
-
I agree that pick 1 won't be enough for a proven gun midfielder. I actually do however believe that if we want to get such a player, then we can only look at such an opportunity this year. Roos coming on, excitement, and possibly picks 1 and 3, and some tradeable players if we need to sweeten the deal further.

Not sure you quite get the context of what I am saying with the first bit Rjay, you are claiming Boyd as being once in a generation. But such claims are made about players every year. Scully was touted as such too... I am not saying these guys are not good players... but once in a generation.... thats a big call. Edit: (unless you are quoting someone else saying that.... then sorry )

TBH with a stronger team with good leadership that might work, but I don't think we should be allowing our players too much say in ANYTHING at the moment. Yes they have a part to play, but I think for too long our players have been given a long leash... that needs tightening...
-
Just to be clear, Watts was touted as the great white hope, as have Hawkins, Joe Daniher, Hogan, and Paton @ GWS? How many once in a generation FFs are there in a generation? Remember Roughead, Franklin, Reiwoldt (x2), Cameron and several others exist in this generation too. All of these players are good, but I think once they step up from under 18s to AFL they come back to the pack somewhat. Possibly cos they end up on playing on once in a generation FBs Back onto Adams though.... if we get pick 1 or 3... do people really want to spend that on Adams? is he that good? Caddy hasn't been anywhere near the 'star' player he was seen as becoming since going to Geelong. I'd be more interested in shaking loose Gaff from WCE for a slightly lower pick, or if we are putting pick 1 or 3 on the table, going hard Dangerfield/Sloane etc and offer Pick 1 and Blease/McKenzie/Tapscott. Do a similar process with Brisbane to get Rockliff or Rich, Go to the dogs for Griffen etc If we are putting big picks on the table then go big, and shake loose someone almost considered untouchable. We only get one chance to do something big with Roos coming on as coach this year with the PP (which I believe we will get) We have an opportunity to sell a vision and Roos will be crucial in selling this to prospective players...., we have the tools at our disposal to see it happen if we are prepared to be daring enough to seize on it.

Agree with you on that Hardtack, and a lot of that has to do with learning that getting defensive structures all over the ground are critical and that bit is non-negotiable, it's only after that is ingrained into these players that you get your flair and exciting football. However the comments about having a potent forward line does suggest we should be able to score once the ball gets into attack. Looking at what happened on Sunday against the dogs is a classic example of what our club needs to get right. Modern day game of football sees clubs get on a roll with momentum and scoring very quickly. We played pretty well for 3 of 4 quarters on Sunday and yet we lost because we could not stop the run on in the 2nd quarter. Sydney under Roos & Freo under Lyon use the creation of stoppages to slow the game down to get it under control again. They work very hard to set the tempo of the game to suit their teams. Even when you look at the game we won against the dogs earlier in the season.... it was very similar except we had the best of the first 3 quarters... last quarter we couldn't stop the run of goals but managed to hold on.
-
Problem with that strategy is if Mick Malthouse says here is a 3 or 4 year contract. Roos and the club have to show that they want Watts to stay and that he has value here. A two year contract based upon performance doesn't say that... and most performance contracts would be based on numbers of games played... not 1%-ers and tackles etc.
-
Pretty certain they want a senior ruckman that is fit and can stay on the park. Say what you want but Jamar hasn't seen a lot of time on the ground since he was AA. If GWS were serious about a ruckman, then surely Bellchambers is at the top of the list... Fit, and several years younger than Jamar, and Essendon have to trade to get into the earlier rounds of the draft.

I tend to agree and have similar thoughts on delistings, I don't think we will see wholesale changes, and if the issues at our club are as much about culture as anything then what better way of getting players onside than showing faith in them to produce. That said I would imagine with the 3 retirements we will see players such as Tynan, Gillies, Sellar and possibly Nicholson moved on. Magner and Couch will not get onto the senior list so I suspect they will be let go.I would not be suprised if Clisby was elevated however, and Stark has only been there for a year and injured most of that time, so he would likely remain on the rookie list. Likewise for Taggert I think he has been injured for most of last year, didn't get a preseason in this year and really only got going in the second half of the year. He should have another year to prove himself hopefully. If that occured that is 7 senior list players going, 1 elevated, and Hogan onto the main list. Leaving 5 new players, and 3 spots on the rookie list.

Wasn't much, Barrett saying it's more like 85-15 than 50-50 and that a few clubs are questioning if the AFL is bankrolling our coach. Apparently only $400k of the rescue package is able to be used for the coaching position. Only other thing was him reiterating it's not $2mil a season, but closer to $1.6mil
-
I tend to agree, and in terms of equalisation, I don't think the other clubs could argue that we need the PP (regardless of how we find ourselves in this position) I think a lot of clubs were moaning at the start / middle of the season, don't think that they have said a lot recently. Besides.... if it was the difference between us getting it or GWS getting yet another pick to go with all their other 1st round picks, I dont' think there would be too many clubs arguing.

Aren't Adelaide still out of the first 2 rounds of this draft? or was it just one year of suspension for salary breaches? http://www.afl.com.au/news/2013-09-01/crows-in-trade-market Thought I read it somewhere, so pick 17 is actually the first pick of the second round (barring any mini draft picks or activations of picks for FA, PP etc...)

Just cautious....
