I guess my post is venting - it is way to easy a few years down the track to say - instead of draft X we could have had Y. And as for saying Oliver would has been there at next pick - you know this how ? Pure speculation. As an aside however, irrespective of the pick - our philosophy of trading into two picks for this draft as opposed to next year is sound. We need success and we need it quickly. Having two top 10 players with an extra years preseason and experience in them is invaluable. I will leave Hogan aside as he is a year older ( and freakish) and use Brayshaw as an example. I think he had an exceptional first year but make no mistake his output fell away in the second half of the year ( as expected with a 1st year) - with another preseason in him ( and years experience under his belt) you would expect him to have more impact into year two. With a Key position player you expect even slower development than a mid ( except Hogan - again - freak) - the quicker you get them into your system bulked up and fit , the better.

I have been pilloried before for calling the draft a lottery. Most of the so called experts get the top 20 or so correct but not necessarily in the right order. I believe that recruiters need to be judged on how the players we draft perform. I can see a debate raging for many moons to come as we watch Oliver's career unfold and undoubtedly his progress will be compared to Parish as this to me ( and many others) was the choice we faced. I have no problem with rating our recruiters against the performances of who we recruit. If recruiters are rated against who we could have had most supporters of all clubs are going to be sorely disappointed at some point. Our recruiting has been poor in the past ( pre the Roos era) - it was not poor because we could have had Wines or Martin, it was poor because the likes of Toumpas, Morton and Cook were just not good enough.

I'm not sure why you qualified your statement. "Don't let Dwayne Russell do any games" would have sufficed.

WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - CLAYTON OLIVER

From the highlights packages his first instinct is the same as Viney - see ball get ball without hesitation. I am not suggesting other players are timid but there is a rare breed who do not wait for a play to unfold to make a move - their first instinct is to make the play. Oliver appears to me as this sort of player. -
Jordie Gysberts was actually first but he found it impossible to break through the tape at the finishing line.

Okay - listen to this one. I administer a large program of online fulfillment from 200 retail stores and we use Auspost. They pick up the parcels from our stores and deliver them to consumers. I had Ausposts city hub ring me saying they couldn't find one of the stores in the emporium - they didn't know where the "emporium" was. I told them the "Emporium" was the old GPO building. They asked me what GPO stood for - aghast I said "general post office" - your old headquarters ! They had no idea where it was so I had to give them the address - only Australia Post could do that !

I am saying how about you quote my entire post where I concluded by saying " in my years of supporting I am now a believer that the club is the best placed I have seen in terms of development coaching to get the most out of the kids we draft.". Again - so it is clear - the inference in me being a believer is for exactly what I have seen from Brayshaw, Salem, Viney and Hogan ( I discard Tyson - not because I think he is not a pearler but because we had two years of exposed AFL form before we drafted him). And to me the litmus test will be the likes of Stretch, Harmes and ANB. They have shown glimpses ( as have many of our draft picks over the years) and I am now eager to have my belief justified by seeing them take the next step this upcoming season -

I think you are overreaching - I was not just outright comparing Toumpas to Oliver. I was addressing Bandicoot's post where he was lauding the fact that Oliver had made a very good fist of it in the VFL as an indicator of what is to come and Toumpas had done EXACTLY that in the SANFL. So it is clear - in no way shape or form am I suggesting that Oliver will turn out like Toumpas. The point is good open company form is not necessarily an indicator that you will make it. Toumpas proved his form against men could not replicate it when he came to the big league. Conversely Hogan played good VFL footy and has replicated it. What is more impressive as stated elsewhere - is his commitment to dropping weight and getting fit. -

After years of seeing Draftees fail I am definitely in the "Old Dee" camp of keeping my powder dry until I see some performances from these youngsters that merits confidence that we have picked some bona fide "guns". I will repeat - in my years of supporting I am now a believer that the club is the best placed I have seen in terms of development coaching to get the most out of the kids we draft. -
It was an OH&S thing - they didn't want members to be able to make nooses from their scarves.

I control the Auspost account for the company i work for and it is a 7 figure spend annually. They give me grey hairs. The national sales manager said to me after I whinged for the 4th time in a week " I don't know why you complain - you know we are a dinosaur". I asked him if realised that dinosaurs became extinct ?

Jimmy Toumpas played the last part of the 2011 in the SANFL and played in the Woodville/West Torrens premiership side in only his 5th game and I recall the same things being said about him. Having said that the biggest two changes at the club since Toumpas' drafting is the emphasis on developing junior talent from day one and Roos stated policy of zero expectations on 1st year players. If there is talent and upside in these draftees I have faith that the structures now in place will bring it to the fore. -
ok - this made me laugh....

Extremist Buddhism in Myanmar. Extremist Hindu groups operating in India. ISIL and others. I just finished a scary book that talked about American Christian Fundamentalists financing Jewish extremists in Israel to blow up Al Aqsa and Dome of the Rock so the the third temple can be built on temple mount - bringing on the rapture. Whilst the simple answer is that the extremist/fundamentalists represent a minute percentage of their religions I cannot help but feel the world would be a much better place if there was no religions at all.

Two completely different bands pre and post Green. So two concerts down this week and my legs are about to give out from jumping around like a lunatic. Florence and the Machine and Mumford and Sons were both superb.

What the hell is wrong with you ??? You should pretend to know everything about under 18 football like every other poster on here.

I have zero time for the romance of father/son purely because the father was a gun. I have a lot of time for the romance of father/son if the son shows enough promise to be worthy of a draft pick.

Went very main stream last week and saw fleetwood mac - i have seen them 3 times before and they were very ordinary. I was dragged along and they have improved to a rating of "meh". Just too - well... icky for me...Christine McVie was great but Lindsey Buckinghamwho plays a great guitar is just a first class plonker. Went last night to see Florence and the Machine - Florence Welch has a set of pipes on her which is just wow - she was extraordinary.. Thursday seeing Mumford and sons Friday I declare bankruptcy.

Some serious questions asked about Paul Roos ...
nutbean replied to dazzledavey36's topic in Melbourne Demons
I would say not - with draftees it is long term. It would be a more interesting question to pose about someone like Dangerfield - Roos may be incentivised to get us into the finals. If Adelaide said that you can hav Dangerfield but we want the first two picks for the next two years Roos may think that this is the difference between making the finals and not this year ? Again I would think that Roos would opt for sustained success rather than quick glory and therefore defer to Goodwin. This doesn't make Roos second in charge - it just recognises that drafting is for the long term and therefore the person with the most invested should have the biggest say - and that's Goodwin -

I'll give you a different hypothetical outcome. Roos has been at pains to point when it comes to Goodwin that they basically share the same views and philosophies on football and how it should be played. I'll put it to you that they wouldn't disagree on much. However if you want to present the scenario that they are diametrically opposed and Taylor and co rank the draftees equally - I would suggest that Roos would say that anything you get out of a first year player is a bonus - it is about setting up the team for years to come - I won't be here - it's your call Goody.... -
It is important that our footballers be fit, but looking at who in the past has done well in the 3 km time trials and also looking at the "elite" runners at other clubs ( seeing their results) I have come to the conclusion that unless you need to run quickly for 3km to pick up a ball during a game ( to my knowledge rarely happens) , then the trials are only a good benchmark of where a player is at ( and should be) compared to his previous endeavors - as opposed to beating other players. Finishing in the top 6 doesn't make you a footballer.

I don't like draft year videos to be used as definitive as to what you are going to receive - I think they can indicate strengths and in some cases you can see weaknesses ( Scully's footskills) however if you look back at Jack Watts' draft year videos they are quite illuminating. I suggest that what he does well now is very evident from the footage but what is completely absent from the video's is still absent from his game today.

What did Mandee post ? I couldn't see it as I have him on ignore. (I jest)
