Actually we have had an ultra defensive game plan for the last 5 years - we havent got the ball out of our defense for the last 5 years.
-
me too...after winning 60-70 games by 9 goals to 7 goals - by that stage I might ( and stress might) be over that sort of game plan.
-
You dont think this may have been discussed a wee bit earlier than just now. Unless....Tammi is my like all my ex wives.... "Can I go out with the boys ?" "Sure you can...why would I mind you going out and having a good time" And then five minutes before it was time to go...BAMMM - my left teste gets lopped off - "you aint going nowhere sunshine"

The reading between the lines was pretty clear from the moment he was asked and he said he didnt think he wanted to coach and then when asked if that meant he definitely wouldnt coach next year and he went with "you never say never, I can only speak for this moment in time". It was pretty obvious it was bubbling under the surface then. Contrast that with the Brisbane Lions " will you coach us " . the answer "no, no I wont".

I believe we have blamed someone for this - Neeld and Bailey. We have picked wrong and we haven't developed talent we have gotten in. What I keep suggesting is that this fascination with potting assistant coaches is purely guesswork. The head coach sets the agenda, the game plan he wants to implement and the overall communication tone with the players. An assistants role is to advise the head coach on strategies, tactics and even give input to influence on the game plan. But at the end of the day it is the head coach who decides what should and shouldn't be implemented. Under Bailey ( and Royal was there during his time) we were attacking and high risk, high reward and little emphasis on defence. Under Neeld the plan was to become more defensive and boundary centric. So tell me - was it Royals epiphany that he changed his coaching method from attack to defense under Neeld or was he operating under instruction ? ( rhetorical question) We have all heard rumblings about players leaving clubs because they don't get on with the head coach. Call me when someone leaves the club because of the incompetence of an assistant.

as opposed to all the other coaches who have been stunningly successful

I think one of the major underlying reasons why PJ is adamant we need an experienced coach is not so much because an experienced coach will turn the ship quicker, but because there is a realization that the ship wont turn quickly and an experienced coach will be able sell a slow rebuild easier than a Neeld or a Bailey.

I am not a defender of Royal but you seem to be missing the obvious - right here and now - what midfielders of A grade quality do we have ? Go through every club and our best midfielder would 2nd or 3rd best choice at their clubs and we dont have anyone else who rates a mention ( Viney is young and hasnt impacted as yet). You put Royal in charge of the likes of Hawthorns midfield and we would probably be calling him a genius. We. have. no. cattle. in. the. midfield. Edit - irrespective - the new coach will bring in his own team anyway - and further to the point about the assistants being a reflection of the head coach - there wont be any assistant appointments before the head coach is selected - it is his call.
-
And Leigh Brown came from a successful club. And Craig as Football director has success. I would suggest you are guessing. The assistants are a reflection of the head coach. The head coach and the assistants are only as good as the players. GWS midfield is organised and works ( to an extent) because it is overflowing with talent. As far as coaching the VFL is concerned - This can be misleading - Casey does quite well in the VFL because we have a lot of MFC players who are really good VFL players and substandard AFL players.
-
I am not advocating either of these guys for the head job. I am on record as saying that unfortunately it is not only about coaching - it is about members, sponsors, AFL, media and the wider football community - that is why the AFL is so gungho on Roos as he ticks the coaching box and all the other periphery boxes. My comment was more about calling our assistants duds when truly no one except those who are actively involved would know ( ie coach, footy manager, etc)
-
actually - over the line ball....out of bounds on the full...
-
This line of thinking always amuses me - how would you know the worth of our assistants ? Ling hasnt coached, Knights and Ratten were both bulletted as head coaches. Maybe all these guys can be great assistants but the only person to judge their value is the head coach - we sitting in the stands wouldnt have a clue.
-
I'm starting to get paranoid about not getting paranoid ( looks over left shoulder rather quickly)

Get off you're high hor'se

Fortunately ( or unfortunately - not sure which) because of poor past appointments the search for the new coach has so many more criteria than normally would be expected. This is not just about who is the best coach for the players. It also is about selling to the members, selling to sponsors, selling to the media and selling to wider football community. It shouldn't be but due to circumstances largely of our making , it is what it is.

The very sad state of Australian politics.

Just checking in...nothing to report

Whether he comes or not is immaterial. What is important is you understand that this a game and I would not be taking anyones public stance as gospel. There are so many pieces to fall into place first and still a third of a season to go before the real business of securing the coaches commences. I wouldnt read too much into Roos comments at this stage. Come seasons end when crunch time comes and all our structures are settled and Paul Roos is asked - in or out - then take his comments seriously - up until that time - its all fluff and nonsense.
-
If I was Roo's I would be fence sitting as well. Having read his book I dont believe his stance is about extracting the most dollars. If he is interested I think his public reticence is wanting to ensure that the best possible pieces are in place to make a coaches job easier. Be a complete optimist - Imagine Geoff Walsh comes on board, PJ already in place, our President is a go getter, new board members of the highest quality, a major sponsor antes up with a huge deal, the AFL chip in $$$$ and a priority pick comes our way. On the reverse - we cant get decent administrative talent in, Jeff Kennet gets the presidents gig and privatises and sells off the rest of the board members, sponsors give up the ghost, the AFL gives us $1.50 and we are awarded two priority picks but are penalised the two picks due to our onfield performances being deemed to bring the game into disrepute. Paul Roos has a reputation and before committing he would want to see what sort of structure he is buying into. I would be non committal at this stage as well.

Melbourne has moved on from Roos
nutbean replied to red and blue forever's topic in Melbourne Demons
The other thing that doesn't cease to amaze me is the absense of thought given by posters to the timetable. I would like to know when the last time a new coach was finalised and announced at the 3/4 mark of the current season. (The only thing that has been strongly hinted at is we want an experienced man) This timetable is especially significant in our case considering we are searching for a head of football, new president, board members, AFL $$ and possible special draft picks. I am sure all prospective coaches have noticed these missing pieces and even Roos' with his "not at the moment" comment may turn out to be "not interested at all" by seasons end but I am sure he like all others have some sort of interest on how all these missing pieces will fall. We are burning no one. There need to be some understanding by posters that nothing will be finalised until season end. -
The interesting part is that so much can be aimed at AD but nothing really sticks. I can name so many preposterous statements he has made and ridiculous notions that he asks us to swallow yet he is Mr Teflon. He will go on his own terms at his own time. Watch and see.

Stats that matter - Dees improvement under Craig
nutbean replied to bandicoot's topic in Melbourne Demons
If wins were all that mattered every coach every year is judged a failure except for the one holding up the cup and every supporter of every club should call for their heads. In a perfect world with a perfect club wins are all that matters but that is not reality. So each club sets its own benchmark as to what is their definition of improvement. And whilst the way we are playing is totally unacceptable the smarter posters can see that there has been baby steps forward since Neeld has been removed. -

Why would we move on from anyone when decision time is not until seasons end. Its a game. -
