Things I didn’t know about Harley He won the Larke medal for the best player in the Australian U18 Champs. He was the #2 draft pick in his year one behind David Swallow and 51 spots ahead of Tom McDonald. He was dropped for disciplinary issues on five separate occasions from the Gold Coast side. As a 19 yo came second behind Ablett in the Gold Coast B & F, averaging 24 possessions and more than a goal a game. He is only 27yo (I thought he was older) and, at least in theory, should be coming into the best footy of his life. For a team desperately short of clean and highly skilled mids, who are also great kicks Harley will probably end up being our most important player within a few games.

To be fair though every team is probably a Jono Brown type short. The guy was one of the best key forwards over the past 50 years. He already made significant contributions in 3 flag winning teams by the time he was Weids age.

Lever has played 19 of a possible 45 matches with us. To be generous, perhaps 4 of those games were of a quality that would justify his 2 first round picks, $800k, 5 year contract. Has to do way, way more before there is talk of him succeeding Max

Well that’s a fair old sledge Wrecker. I remember watching Grgic and occasionally he would do something to show he had a special talent. Ended up being a poor mans Jack Watts. To continue the analogy, and Sam isn’t there yet, but he is trending towards a David Cordner trajectory. I was concerned about Patton before the game. The bloke doesn’t have to have many shots on goal to hurt you. What I didn’t realise is how useless he is once the ball hits the ground. Zero defensive pressure. He is a well built statue. Defenders are going to run off him all year and Jon will be directly costing the Hawks goals down the other end. You gotta be happy about that!

I don’t think anyone on here was expecting him till mid season. To me it is almost good news, just confirms what we already knew. Harley can build form from the back end of the season and be cherry ripe for finals. Yay!
