IF the hypocrites who run the AFL are serious about respecting. umpires, they would issue a statement, this week, along the lines of: ANY contact with an umpire (other than a truly accidental contact in the course of play) WILL be suspended for at least 4 weeks. ANY prolonged or aggressive dissent to an umpires decision, WILL result in a free kick and a 50 meter penalty. IF implemented fearlessly and impartially this would end immediately.
Dangerfield loves the sound of his own words - I wonder how he would feel if Mumford runs through him this weekend with his "careless" elbow and breaks his jaw? Greene has had so much love given him by MROs, MRPs and tribunals over the years I guess he just knew he would get a fine. Surely priors should be taken into account, fines included.
FFS the bye could severely disadvantage the QF winners, us and Port. I guess the AFL are hoping that the Geelong Geriatrics will get there and would certainly benefit. No logic and only adds an extra week for one tiny little covid virion to get loose in Perth.
Novel thought - how about fines only for those fringe players on base payment - all other offences get a suspension as $100 or $1500 clearly means nothing to the likes of Greene, Dangerfield, Selwood, Hawkins, Mumford. Ahhh. Tommy Lahiff. I remember his and Harry Beitzel at Waverley one day (not long after the metric system replaced yards, feet and inches). Harry:"Waverley is 20% larger than the MCG" Tommty:"Is that in meters, Hawwy?"
Too right they missed. A "clear message" would have started at 6, plus a "good behaviour bond" of a further 3 if he ever spoke to or gestured in an intimidatory way to an umpire over the remainder of his career. That, plus as an aside, clear notice that persistent arguing or haranguing (which would include removing the mouthguard as per Mitch Robinson) an umpire results in a free kick, plus 50 regardless of the player or the match.
I was thinking of Jacko but how exciting would a clone of Jurrah be in this playing group?
What takes place in the stands, and on line is totally different to even verbal abuse by players on the field, let alone aggressive contact, which is what occurred. FCS if the AFL are serious about 'defending umpires' and 'the integrity of the game' then they must stop any contact with umpires (other than the truly accidental in play) AND also start penalising on field abuse and even questioning - start with an automatic free kick, and add an immediate 50 meters each time it continues. It would stop almost instantly.
How unbelievable would it be to get a LJ#2 in 2-3 years. One can dream.
Sadly I think this is true. IF we played the same 22 for the next two weeks, who would be 23rd, and why?
