    My 2 observations:

    1. If I was Buckley, I’d be furious. Where has that level of intensity been for them all year? I’ve seen a fair bit of their footy and their tackling intensity and ball use was horrific. They choose when to go, and it was us unfortunately.

    2. We looked very flat all game. Not clean, constantly fumbling, and not bringing our team mates into the game with first options. I don’t mind if the press come for us now. We need a rocket, and 2 weeks to reset and focus on what we want to be.

    Great post THBT.

My takeout was the disgrace that the Pies team is , basically getting the coached sacked and turning up for his last game. Terrible and they should be embarrassed.

We'll go on and re-set to lock in a Top 4 after the bye, but some have been found out and there are some quality inclusions to come back, Viney, Ben or Mitch Brown, Jones - and sore layers get a rest - Salem , Oliver( clearly targetted today), Gawn,

The system is proven in a scary way against absolute quality in Dogs and Lions.  But a good time now to be exposed in some areas now for second half season re-set.

Should we have seen this coming after 2 huge weeks in a row?

Probably a good insight.  Smaller ground doesn't suit but primariliy the bye needs to be used to re-think forward sysetm a bit.  Weideman gone at 4 handballs and a tackle today.  Too much left to too few for scoring.

Rest is OK  and team can freshen up next couple of weeks.

I only watched the last five minutes, while I agree about the kick not being 15 metres I also thought Richmond got away with a couple of throws in that period.

Agred they threw it a few times IMO.  But the Kennedy mark was 60 ish seconds to go and a game changing opportunity.

How was Ryan’s kick to Kennedy judged over 15 m?  - should have been play-on for mine.

Game No. 5 of this season  decided by bad umpiring in the final minute. It was 8 ms if it was anything.

You just can't be close near the end of the game to take umpiring out of the equation. double free kicks- again - to eagles.

But I thought the tiges looked off esp in forward entries and now don't fear then in September. Dusty trying too hard reminded me of the Dees pre-2021.

    Reiwoldt unsighted when needed.

Nic Nat's feeding of his midfield in center  was sublime and Tiges just seemed unable to cope

Yze has a realistic prospect of being a very visible part of a drought-breaking premiership at the Demons, perhaps even this year as well as riding the peak of the next couple of years. Staying with the Demons will only boost his credentials and give him a better prospect of a better senior coaching position in future.

Spot on. We win it with yze in the box calling strategy and midfield and he becomes unbelievably better credentialled against all comers. Mitchell included.

    Gets the very next opening.

Surely after what’s happens at Pies they need an experienced coach

I think the current board will use this appointment to shore up their reelection chances. They are after all politicians . Yze luckily for us doesn't cut it P R wise for them  although he would be a great appointment.  Happy for him to seek promotion. Just not till 2023.

Lyon must be odds on. Ptoven rebuilder and strategist.

    Interesting...

On that scenario Geelong would play its first final at Kardinia Park... Geelong v WC

Could also result in no matches at all in Vic in the second round of the finals

Bulldogs to lose only one match going forward (presumably against us) is an interesting prediction. You may also have underestimated Brisbane by a game or two.

    Fascinating though and thanks

Melb Fc unlocked the  Dogs in their most emphatic performance for the year and I think other quality teams will/could do the same. Dogs being on top is a bit Over The Top.

On this theory I have the dogs only winning 5 more games. Port Bombers Dees Eagles and Geelong will all be tricky for them.

If that beat that then well done to Beveridge to re-set strategy a bit.

I doubt Buckley would ever entertain taking another subservient role at any club. It was obvious he was always uncomfortable when he had to serve his apprenticeship under Malthouse. He was accustomed to royal treatment at the head of the queue throughout his football career. Media work will be safe for his ego.

Malcolm Blight talked about leaving coaching and th loss of identity when you are no longer the decision-maker. He said Bukcley will find it difficult not being in charge. People aren't interested in commentators opinions. They will now want to know what Robert harvey thinks.  Blight said he went through this, as Buckley will and it didn't sound like fun. He was being very sympathetic.

Not sure I agree with your media work comment in this regard. Its not a substantial role unless your Barry Cassidy, Waleed Aly, Sarah Ferguson, Gerard Whately, etc.

Froth and bubble, esp in the sports media.  Bucks is better than that

Absolutely we should be going after Maynard.

Remember also his old man works for Casey Demons already.

    Great replacement for Hibberd.

The only Pie I think the team would be interested in/need .

    Supporters need to relax.

This will be massively draining on Collingwood players during the week. There will be many thinking about their future given the events that have transpired at Collingwood since last year's trade period. The club is a shambles atm with everything they've faced.

If anything, this gives Goody and co another reason to G our guys up and prepare them for a hot first quarter. Clearly Collingwood will throw everything at as in the first quarter and if we can match their intensity (assuming it'll be there), then we will roll them after that.

Collingwood have bullied us on many occasions, we're the oldest rivals in the game.

It's time to give it to them.

    Great post JG.

Our side will simply kick into gear  and Max will have them do what they have been doing for 3 months.  The Pies mindset, if its platying out of their skin for Bucks, will simply be an indictment on them and the football dept at the Pies.

    Their trolls

    • Poor Deeeees fans, the MCC toffs, cant have their usual chardonnay, Pimms, brandy lime and soda, plus their cucumber sandwiches, in their usual plush surrounds.
    • Love to beat this mob, then their fans, being in Sydney, can head to the snowfields of Mt Kossie, which is obviously be a lot closer than the usual ski chalets of Mt Buller here.

Thanks for the laughs QD> Excellent research as usual.

But how out of touch these Pies Trolls are?

As a proud long standing MFC and MCC member, the MCC is the most egalitarian and best value for money club in the universe, club elections held, brilliant organising.... You just need patience (15years in the case of a junior and 25 years for adult) in the waiting list to join. Not expensive by any measure.

and the Pies ?- when was the last time any of these trolls had a say in running their club - 1990's was the last election to the fiefdom run by McGuire and mates.

Any what's wrong with skiing anyway - its a great pasttime the world over.

Old + inexperienced is IMO the worst possible combination for a side that is mid-table.

8 of their 23 on the weekend were aged 27+ (Hooker, Zaharakis, Phillips, Ambrose, Heppell, AMT, Stewart and Stringer).

For comparison, 5 of our 22 on the weekend were aged 27+ (Hibberd, Melksham, Gawn, May, TMac).

Of which 4 of the 5 are or were AA standard. Their's are hacks now except AMT

I think the club ultimately will give Ben Brown another run at it to see if we function a bit better, i think it's fair to say his output goal wise is likely to be higher than Weids, so it'll really be a question of if what Weid brings to The table is worth more to the structure than the 2-3 goals Ben Brown is likely to offer each game

Thats a great point.  I always see BB good for a couple of goals each game  esp given his kicking reliability. Match Cttee would be fascinating to sit in on these day.

And yet the teams he has been an important part of have kicked 94, 95, 87 and 97 points, including against 2 of the top 3 teams in the league. Often it's not about possessions.

AFL ranking points? These clearly favour high possession players over low possession players. It says that the top 3 players in the league are Jack Macrae, Touk Miller and Mitch Duncan. It says Chris Mayne is a better player than Nat Fyfe. It says that Jarman Impey is better than Dustin Martin. It has Jack Darling as the second best key forward in the league.

Weideman also currently has a higher AFL rating than Ben Brown this year.

The point I'm making is that 4 games of AFL ratings is, at best, a pretty poor representation of a player's value to his team.

Great posting Axis of Bob summarinsing the dilemma.

Goodwins presser of Friday night highlighted that the coaching team has the same unresolved issue I thought as the supporters and its a work in progress. Weideman competes in the air and brings it to ground which i suspect they value highly given our current forward players - spargo, Pickett, bullen etc.  i.e just halve the contest at least and let the talent do the rest.

Having said that, against Harris Andrews standard defenders, halving can be a challenge

But they still have to decide I guess, or not, and run with Weid maybe seeing BB as a bit one-dimensional possibly?

Can’t see that happening Jaded. JJ is pretty much a defensively minded inside mid, I’m not sure he’s ever played half back, whereas Sparrow has, I think that would be the most likely move, but I think Jayden will be desperate to remain in the side. Salem would be the obvious one with ‘soreness’ if there’s a change in the back line.

Lingers is the obvious in for a sore Salem - if he plays however,  then I think they will reward Sparrow and push Melksham  out of the 22. He could be medi sub or maybe Jones.

Lingers definitely in but I think Salem gets nursed through the game, similiar to him being taken off near the end of Fridays game.  We need to go into the Bye with a winning and Salem is a 'break glass in emergency' team member so nurse him, but have him available if the game is tight.  Don't mess with defence.

This is the best I’ve ever seen us. This is the first time in my lifetime that we are the premiership favourites. Sure we’ve had other great season like in 2000, but that was a year when Essendon was always going to be premiers. I don’t think there’s any team we can’t beat this year. Definitely our best season since 1964

Great topic CW  with this addition - and as one who was at Western Oval in 1987.

This week, at Round 12, and with 11 wins and a killer %, we can say with certainty that the Dees WILL play finals this year.

Normally, even with a good team such as 2018 it was always up to Round 20 or even last Round (1987, 1988 -a GF year, 1998 -a prelim final year) that we locked away finals.

I'm sitting back now and enjoying the rest of the home and away games  unlike every other year in the last 55 years when I started following the Dees.

But, after watching Clayton Olivers post match on Kayo on Friday , the take away comment from him to G. Lyon was "...I hate losing.."

No way will this team and coaching staff let up and I'll be enjoying it.

  17. The Age this morning nominated Simon Goodwin as their (Jake Niall's) coach of the mid year AA team.

While worthy on many fronts did anyone notice on the Friday night coverage that pre-match just in their final huddle in the rooms it was Mark Williams in the middle giving it to them ? They broke up then ran out to the ground. Williams was there greeting the victors as they entered the rooms after the win.

I thought that is this a sign of just how complete the coaching team is as a unit that the senior coach had another of his team doing this prior to the most important game of the year. Sure he might have been indisposed but I suspect not at this time of the evening.

Goody showed great confidenec in this approach and alluded to it in the post match that he coached from the boundary for various reasons, but has great faith in those up in the box to see the whole game and advise - think Yze, Chaplin, Stafford.

Maturity I havent seen in the Dees before. (not saying it wasn't there before though).

Must be a seriously unified unit .

Has had the jitters since IMO.

he had a corked thigh at the time so I always forgive him that miss.  20m out on a slight angle against Carlton I think.

That episode, unfairly or not, did colour my thinking on him.

Next week will be a Dees crowd for sure at the SCG

    HELL YEAH!

We switched on the afterburners and got the job done against serious opposition.

And the best thing is (I think) that there were a handful of players who never got in the game.

We are capable of so much more. IT'S SCARY.

So, have we beaten anyone yet?

Still haven't beaten anyone above us.
