I thought the boilover was on but Essendon were pathetic after quarter time. Like us a few years ago they need some serious investment in their defence otherwise they will never get near Top 4.

And is Rutten as good as they say?

i.e. Tom Stewart - 13 uncontested marks. No planning or just no-one to counter him?

I think he will be good culture-wise for them however.

Weather isn’t the issue. 0 - 1mm rain predicted. They clearly want to have another look at the smaller forward line set up. You’ve got to trust in them (they’ve deserved that trust) but to be honest it irks me we’re not using an off-Broadway match at the G to trial BBB

Not unreasonable . So far theres only been 1 wwek without the extra tall, if you assume Weids was contributing when he played?

Last week w/out BBB I reckon.

I'm tipping there won't be many replies to the Giants thread.

Maybe substitute a picture of tumbleweeds at Giant Stadium....tumbleweed.png

    Kudos for this post.

The original post was 22 hours ago. Normally the other team's insigths correspond to a meltdown of hilarity and comment on here.

No such luck and says just how different it must be to follow a new team as opposed to the traditonal ones with rusted on emotion. Sad really for them.

    Suns commentary must be worse.

i've seen some pretty useless stats over the years in many sports, but i think this one takes the cake

On the contraty it tells us the teams thst genarally did well in last half of last season carried that good form across summer and into first half of this year.  Whilsy last years also rans are still in that position.

    Fritsch for Brown...get real

We need some more forward power

Without Petracca and a couple of lucky goals...Jordan 100 metre penalty...T Mac after the Essendon player knocked himself out on the behind post..

    We lost the match

    Well said here.

It reminds me of the selction mistake (IMO) prior to the 1987 prelim, when the great John Northey, dropped a forward David Williams, for a defender, Rod Grinter.

Williams was a proven goalkicker and was in tears in the race at the end of that disatsorous game.  He was back in the the 1988 GF team but little consolation at the time.. Willaims had a poor game in the lead up semi against the Swans, but in the prelim our best goalkicker was Ricky Jackson with 3. Wilson 2. The other forwards didn't fire a shot and we lost by only 2 points.

Brown will free up Fristsch to do what he does best - dominate in the air in one on ones.

How is me being a supporter got to do with anything? Are you really that blinded that you can't have an unbiased view? That's embarrassing that you can't be impartial.

I see us beating GWS, Hawthorn, Suns and Adelaide and losing to Port, WCE, Geelong, Dogs. I think that's reasonable given our form has dropped off a bit.

I'm with you DRD on this issue.  It's an intersting discussion between a supporters optimism (which I don't have) and reality (which I do have).

My only additon to your prognostication is that I have a lot more faith in coaching and leadership on the ground nowadays (note Dogs and Lions wins for example.)

On that score I think a Port win and a Geelong win is possible - but not bankable in the slightest. The others are realistically in the loss column.

I think the media would argue that it's the audience (viewers, listeners and readers) who aren't deep thinkers and without long attention spans. The media then plays to the limitations of its audience by discussing something as fresh as possible. And I suspect that view is probably correct.

Good point.  I am new to On the Couch and Kayo and have found that show and Kayo game day special comments head and shoulder above any show on Free to air - with 2 exceptions:

Any Ch 7 game with Daisy Pearce as special comments

     and The Front Bar.

Thanks ... but wasn't after the on sale time ... was wanting to know the mcc match category that determines whether provisional members will be eligible ... if it is similar to the Essendon game them I am shut out ... leaving my decision until tomorrow if it's 25k may mean l miss out altogether

Sorry my Mistake and good Luck.

With zero cases today again I expect the stated 85% rule to apply by Dan Andrews.  The club told me their email is on hold till that is clarified , assuming its tomorrow morning .

Despite being top of the ladder and having a 10-0 winning record against the next 12 teams below us it appears the local media pundits are not taking us very seriously. We hear comments alluding this is the most even season and anyone can win it. Two weeks ago the Richmond premiership machine was cranking up, then it was Geelong on the march and now the Bulldogs are clear favourites again. The bombers are charging up the ladder many say and are becoming a threat despite being out of the 8. Of course we haven’t proven anything  yet and many of our wins have been hard fought but there is perception we are just a side show to the real contenders. Seems there is a trend to talk up all our Victorian rivals above us. Other interstate rivals don’t get much love either. Despite our continuing success we are still regarded as a Cinderella club in Victoria. Any other opinions?

The media aren't generally deep thinkers with long attention spans and tend to predict the last impressive team they saw. So this week its the dogs after their eagles demolition with Brisbane after the last game.

When Dees beat up both those teams we were flavour of the month until the next big performace by another team. Dropping the pies game didn't have a lot of impact on predictiosn after beating the next big thing -the Bombers.

ON the Couch's Gerad Healy tipped Dees last night for flag if he was forced to predict someone - " haven't done a lot wrong, just need to fix forward connection..." , but also noted the tiges won in 2017 with only 1 tall, and by inference why can't the Dees.

Others said 4 are in the race - us, lions, cats and dogs.

I thought Merrett was clearly 2nd best on ground

May was head and shoulders above Merritt on impact on the result.  He was good getting the ball so much but votes are about right in terms of who influeneced the outcome,  incl Lever, gawn, Oliver

    Cheer up Boooooombers!  lol

And even better than the brillliant stat above  from herelast week, the year the Bombers last won a final NOT coached by Kevin Sheedy?

The 1968 prelim.  (then lost the following week's GF)

Obviously there won't be an issue with crowd numbers assuming no more outbreaks. Does anyone have information about sale times? MCC and other members?

MCC just said they are waiting on Govt. confirmation of the capacity number.

Reckon on the bigger grounds like the G, the wing is crucial.

Teams want to go through the corridor or the shortest way home but the reality is most teams are great at clogging up the corridor. Having an attacking wingman (Langdon) and letting him run into space as well as a more defensive option (Brayshaw) has been one of the moves of the year in my opinion.

Both are incredibly courageous and Langdon's gut running is out of this world. Angus' aerial ability is also underrated.

I made a comment in the votes thread that perhaps we have become too used to Langdon's brilliance and that he wins his position week after week. But as far as influence on the game goes, he is right up there with Oliver, Petracca. May, Lever and Gawn in importance and execution.

Good post here. The heat map of langdon that has been shown on TV shows Langdon is orange/yellow in both the back and forward pockets of his wing and not much in between. He spends time helping defence and attack then scampers to the opposite end he might be on  - few if any teams have an Ed Langdon-type.

He's our 8th defender IMO as a side job.

You could forgive someone for thinking we lost on the weekend after a having a look at a lot of the comments in this thread.

Having said that, I reckon Ben Brown needs to come in for someone, not sure who though.

I don't blame the commentary today.

AT the game we said all night without the May/Lever (apologies to Hunt,Salem Rivers and Hibberd) team, we would have lost for sure .

Henece the hand-wringing here about selection.

Premiership defence now. Just fix other issues forward.

There’s no way we’re dropping our leading goal kicker.

If we’re doing the two changes then I think AnB goes out. He still turns it over too often (had 5 last night and went at 43%). I know he had 5 tackles but I think Kozzy has an X factor that worries the opposition.

Kozzie continually chases hard and applies pressure and every team needs an X factor that can be unpredictable. Kozzie fills that role and has exhibited a creativity when on . Spargo is a lock also IMO.

Was Stringer quiet? He ended up with 24 disposals and kicked 1.2.

I've been a big believer that on form alone this year he simply gets a new contract with the thought that he'll play majority of games potentially in the VFL much like what Jetta and Nathan Jones are doing now.

Makes sense why the club is potentially looking at Brayden Maynard if all reports are true. The perfect replacement.

Sorry you're right -Stringer wasn't quiet,  I meant ineffective.  he had a couple of opportunites but butchered the ball when in good positions and displayed an unacceptable selfishness when ignoring team mates in better positions.

  17. Few players can claim to be to famous but not Michael Hibberd, and have a process/style/impact named after them.

After the Tigers game this year the media and others starting using the term regardging how to deal with Dustin Martin - " XXX club (the tiges opponent on any given week)  needs to find THEIR Michael Hibberd..."

This also applied to pre-match discussion on the Dogs game re: tagging the Bont - "...send Hibberd??..." Every team now needs a " Michael Hibberd.."

He kept Stringer to a single goal and quiet game on Saturday - further enhancing his status. From memory I think he dealt with Lance Franklin this year also.

But my quetsion is, given his age at 31, and if I read the Contract thread on Demonland correctly , in his last year this year of contarct - who is his likely successor, and do we have one?

I love Trent Rivers, but he's not in the Hibberd style.

Or is he a once-off?   He was quietly booed at times on Saturday but Bombers fans next to me thought it bad taste and wished he had never left them.

    Is cloning a possibility?

I wonder; if Essendon supporters hadn't started booing wildly within the first five minutes because of one free kick that they reckoned should have been there (or whatever), would the Bombers have had a better run from the umpires?

Did anyone else catch the mic'd umpire saying "Just stop yelling at me, Devon." Third quarter, I think.

I have an Essendon-supporting ex from many years ago who would have been absolutely table-banging furious. Such joy.

Devon smith didn't allow jordan a clear run ahead for his girst 50. So ump pinged hom 50 correctly for the second 50. Turning point moment.

And he doesn't shut up anyway.

And the booing at the ground was the best/worst I've ever heard.

    Bombet fans victim complexes possibly.

Great win should have put them away in the 3rd quarter but didn't it almost cost us but we held on well in the end for a well deserved win. The back half were excellent. Very proud of the  boys dare to dream.

Good strategic last quarter. Burning plenty of early minutes.
