If one really thinks more about it in an evolutionary way, maggots metamorphosise into blowflies, which have compound eyes, so possibly not quite so far fetched as first appears.

On the Hawkins issue, I can’t remember which case but the MRO and or tribunals have very clearly said, if you pin the arms and the head hits the ground you are guilty. I guess they will do a  Donut Dan on this one - “don’t remember”

The Age this morning put the incident up in lights. Will be looked at for sure.

Midfield defending has been poor thus far. Clarry, Trac, Harmes and Langdon all jogging while their opposition runs off.

Coaches need to find a way to fire them up consistently.

Oppo midfiled threesome have had 30 possessions in 21 Minutes.!!!

It's opening up for us somewhat. Teams around us are getting key injuries while we still have a charmed run.

We need to make the most of it and cement a top 2 spot. Can't rely on the dogs winning next week, just win today and in Geelong or we run the risk of playing port in Adelaide

I would welcome the chance to play a team that hasn't beaten a top side all year in Port (rather than Geelong) for first week of finals.

I know I’m not always positive about things but jeez this a negative spin.

Percentage doesn’t mean anything now but I would ours to go above the Bulldogs to further reinforce that we have been the best team all year.

Agreed on this CB.  Win today and were' playing for top next week and will be above the Dogs.

Also, looking at the losses this year, I believed at the game that GWS are worthy finalists after their win against us, the Hawks showed they a a good team yesterday and the draw could be called noteworthy (?), and the Pies had the Buckley emotion.

Adelaide were the only outlier in the Dees performance this year.

Lets put that to bed today and we have beaten just about all comers so far this year. Self-doubt inside the club would be non-existent going into finals.

That depends on Covid Im afraid.

Fair to say everything is up for grabs.

Agreed.  But the Adelaide Oval is do-able crowd wise and the least-worst option for travel.

But with a Chief Health Officer who has no understanding of AFL, or ball games in general, I suspect we'll be locked out anyway.

could be 3 out of 4!!!

I am hoping for 2nd with cats on top. Then dees and cats straight into prelim after week 1. Only meet cats then  once in gf. The trick in top 4 is to win week 2.

I don’t recall that there are degrees of tenuousness.

Most importantly, did ch 7 make a judgement?
If not Christian won’t even look at it.

The mrp is a joke but i would think Christian looks at at least all incidents involving concussion and especially being subbed off. A week probably coming up for tom.

I'm not sure, I'd rather Port in Adelaide than coping Geelong at KP (regional crowds in Victoria) for week 1.

I don't really rate Port (I think they are the weakest of the top 4 sides) and we have a good record at Adelaide Oval.

The afl own the grounds during finals so to speak and set ticketing policy. Thus if we play in adelaide there will be many more dees fans getting over there and wont be anywhere near a full port crowd.

He has come good after a shake start.

May,Lever,Rivers , Petty ,Salem..just need one more with run and with  a bit of muscle on Trent and its a backline we will remember.

Imagine just how good Petty and Rivers, and probably Bowey, will be in the future after playing under May and Lever fo 2-3 years.

Oh man why you gotta go depressing me like that?

And if it was against the Dees, the tackler, probably Selwood's tagger Jack Viney, would be cited by the MRP and get the GF double penalty and be rubbed out for 2 weeks, escalated to four for carelss high contact and medium impact.

And Dangerfield, in his capacity as President of the AFLPA would note the following Monday  he thought the act wasn't an in-play act andthus  be deserving of a suspension with the MRP getting '..about right.."

He will have already have been cleared of knocking out Dees playmaker Kozzie Pickett in the first quarter.

Now tell me that's not an unrealistic scenario.

That bulldogs game was with no crowd. 🧐

Great point and proves the Noise Affirmation theory IMO.

Take out the Dogs game and across only other Optus games , the eagles are Plus 34 Frees at home games.

Equates to around 5 extra frees a home game, not to mention all the oppo frees missed due to crowd silence

I have West Coast's stats from this year.

208 frees to 188 for WCE from 11 Home Games at Optus Stadium.

They won the free kick count 7 of 11 times.

Twice had 10 or more frees than the away side.

There are no stats for free kicks not paid.

No surprises that one of the free kick counts that they lost at home this year was against ... surprise surprise ... the Bulldogs.

Thats the underlying issue isn't it.

The crowd screams and the free is paid.

A Dees player is pushed in the back - silence -play on.

An interesting stat would be the free kick differential for Home games only for Crows, Power, Weagles and Lions.

I'm betting it would blow this stat table away and confrim the ' Noise of Affirmation'?

The stat I mentioned above puts the eagles at + 27 ahead at Optus.  As logic in umpire behaviour would suggest. They are Plus 4 across the whole season.

But the killer aspect of this was that when the Dogs played over there the Free scores were 18 to 11 - Dogs favour.

Doggies have unlocked this seceret and we need to find out what it is clearly.

Wow. Top of the table and then this. We are in real good shape. Massive congratulations to the Goodwin and the list managers and the club in general

Good point but the key take out is this.

We are the top of the table, and only 8 players are playing for bona fide finals teams (generally)

And we have four of them.  So how good are our nominees given they have made a place for themselves in a top of the ladder team where you expect competition would be fierce for spots, and/or they can hold their own in the AFL in a top team and then relentless competion that brings.

Well done to these four. Several IMO are not in the bottom 6 for selection either -Rivers, Petty, KOzzie (?).

I didn’t think he should have blooded any new players leading into September. Thank goodness I’m not on the match committee. 😅

Magnificent disposal skills and a head on his shoulders well beyond his 18 odd years (at least in a football sense). A huge tick for the recruiting staff!

He executed a beautiful short pass in heavy traffic, between eagles players to a target in the 3rd quarter.

He sold me then, composure, good decision and first rate execution.  His HTB in last 1/4 was just a speed of the game thing and he'll learn.  Huge pick up for the club IMO

I don't believe vandenBerg is in our best 22. However, any player that gets an odd game here or there is likely to struggle for any number of reasons including, not being in rhythm with team-mates, lack of so-called match fitness, and possibly nerves. Last night, vandenBerg looked like a player not quite understanding the pace of the game. Understandable when you haven't played regular senior football. If he were to stay in the side, I would expect him to improve.

I think he would also, but just at whose expense?  He had 4 tackles and had an inpact in that regard.

You can never doubt his endeavour.

I'm just laughing now. Seriously forget about that final 15 minutes. We went over to Perth playing to get our top spot back and we did it.

Lets get back to Melbourne and beat Adelaide.

Agree on this.  The mindset for both teams at the break would have been tricky to manage.

Dees go into the break knowing they have a lock on Top 4.

Eagles know they are out of finals if they lose , so lots to keep switched on for. Theyr;e stil a proud club.

Just human nature playing out and understandable.

Winning in Perth after last 2 weeks of travel and upheaval was super human of this team.

    Well done lads.

    Absolutely nailed it

How does Vandenburg get chance after chance. Was slow and dumb and missed two definite shots that should have been kicked

This idea of " lets play vanderenberg for his aggression " . Amazes me as old-style thinking.

A player has to contribute. Look at Oliver. He's as tough as he comes but what a contributor.
