  1. Grimey needs to focus on getting the park for 20 games a season.

    JT for me.

Trengove signals a new era, will always be first picked each week and is already a gun anyway. Good support from Beamer will help out.

David Dench was apointed at 21. We cannot go back to a captain at FF. Must be an on-baller with grunt and style. JT has all this.

  2. Heard 3AW rumour file this morning, no apparent source other than Ross Stevensen himself - but said R.Lyon to Dees on 5yr deal. Unconfirmed.

    I hope so HT.

Can we remember that Ross Lyon was part of the Roos team that took swans to a flag. I don't believe some of the rubbish comments on here about 'saints footy'.. IMO 'saints footy' is about discipline and team ethos. They just don't score as much. He would be the best fit for us since the great John Northey who had a very good list play well above themselves week in week out.

It was great to see Swooper and Rod Grinter at the 'G' last week too.

    A

  3. Cannot attend - wish the supporters attending well.

This season cannot end fast enough for me - bring on 2012.

I agree about looking to 2012, but in the interets of optimism, note the following:

    1. The President is with us

    2. New modern training facilites open

    3. DEBT FREE

    4. The great G. Lyon is football director

    5. Jack Watts

    6. Jack Trengove

    7. Opportunity to now try a new EXPERIENCED senior AFL coach - first since 1981

    8. The core playing group is young enough still to be moulded

    9. Stefan Martin

    Have I missed anything???

  4. Gee his body language when questioned on OWAAT was very telling.

I think an offer has been made.

I am certain it has, however Lyon was most professional clealy not specultaing through the media. The term he used on the show was 'posturing'. He doesnt do this and leaves this up to his management and believes they will handle it correctly.

Much has been said about 'Saints' footy on this thread, but from my memeory of the great John Northey- - the demons were never beaten till the final bell, snatching many a last minute victory and they were as every bit excting as free flowing game styles we see today sometimes.

The will not be a payout issue as he would not break a contract - simply agree to part company, hopefully accepted by the St.Kilda board. They can sue him for 'specific performance' , which simply means a legal manner to make him stay one more year, but in those circumstances would be unlikely to be invoked.

  5. How cash can be obtained by not spending an amount you were never going to spend is beyond me...

We can pay for a good coach like Clarkson or Malthouse because of the fact that we have grown revenue streams and asked fans to chip in.

If you think cash flow in a football club regarding player remuneration is isolated your'e more naive than I thought by this comment.

  6. If the offer to Clarkson is true, it's a good move at precisely the right moment before anything is penned with the Hawks. Surely it must be worth some consideration, former club, 5 year lucrative offer, Lyon, Viney , Connolly - all acquaintances. But it would be hard to let go with what he has helped build and the superstars available on the Hawthorn list as well as Jeff on the way out.

It would be a great coup in netting a visionary coach who has his finger on the cusp when it comes to tactical game plans. Although it must be said, he has benefited from the quality players and good recruiting at his disposal.

If Clarkson is a true professional and Melbourne throws the kitchen sink at him, he will take it. Issues about lists quality etc. over a 5 year deal - which is a lifetime offer for someone of his age - will not/should not count in his decison. Pickering will be telling him the same. This issue is a professional one, not that emotional - thats the angle for us fans to take.

The cash comes from the Board's resolve, quite correctly, not to pay Scully an outrageous salary which would destabilse the team.

Whatever happens this move says to me the Board/G. Lyon and Co. are seriously on this case for next year.

I'm excited that there's a firm hand on the tiller.

  7. If Todd Viney gets a response from the players in the remaining games it would be hard to go past him. I see him waving his arms around passionately at games whilst DB is deep in thought.

The worst thing the club could do is to appoint anyone on the strength of 6 games at the end of this season. Think Geischen, Primus, etc..

Be clever about this next move.

  8. And it is a puff piece with nothing of note, because there is nothing of note. GWS has had no impact in Sydney's west other than amusement factor.

The four league clubs mentioned, while they aren't having great years on the field (Parra are killing me), they are still the power base and nothing the AFL is doing is going to change that.

I live in the north west and my dad works in Penrith (one of the clubs mentioned), and does a lot of work for the local junior leagues (which are massive) and they aren't losing kids

(or teens or young adults) who want to play AFL, they aren't losing money to GWS sponsors and the Panthers still dominate the town both financially and with playing stocks.

Well written QueenC . This post should be mandatory reading for everyone, inclduing AFL leadership, and then shut down this thread. If Tom goes he is going to oblivion, if he stays gerat for us.

I cannot still believe this GWS team has any legs. Has Demetriou ever lived in Sydney let alone been to the West. This process is the greatest waste of money since I don't know what and the AFL is tantamount to negligent in the matter from a business persepctive. Fortunately I'm not a shareholder.

    Go Dees

  9. All of this talk about Scully holding the club to ransom (not in your case Demon17) and what we can and cannot afford is in my opinion, wasted words... the club will only offer what they think he is worth and what they can afford after taking into consideration all other factors such as Sylvia's contract issues and the impact on the rest of the playing group (I for one trust them to have been gauging the feeling within the playing group, particularly after the Junior debacle).

Fully agree Hardtack, its just that the GWS model offers such a quantum of difference never seen before that we cannot envisage the impact on the team if he stays, and we expect him to forgoe an offer that would be ridiculous is too much to expect

  10. +1, I'm still firmly expecting he will stay with us, but I wish with all my being that this bloody season would just end so we can all get back to worrying about normal things such as coaches, new draftees etc, instead of worrying why TS wasn't singing the song with as much gusto as the rest of them.

I now think he needs to go.

The financial model due to GWS puts this issue into new territory. Nothing like this has happened in prior years. If he stays legitimately, he will have sacrificed 100's of thousands of $'s per year. Absolutelt unrealistic to expect this from anyone. Thus if we match the deal, it will have a huge effect on the rest of a terrifc young playing group.

They will eventually start looking at their own bank balances etc and compare - its human nature.

In summary, we can't afford him so lets all move on . He should do the same and cut the crap about waiting etc.

Screwed again by Andrew Demetriou not thining this through

  11. Thats interesting. I'm glad you put this in because my 'gut reaction to the 'interview' was thats he's left already.

I got up and started cleaning up the dinner plates when I had a flash, "He's gone already". Why? what? Huh? He was trying to play some game and Sam was fishing I believe on Gary's behalf to try to find something.

This suggested to me that he's not singed with Melbourne!!!

Then I just thought It's Carlton! He's signed already and It's not Melbourne, or Gary wouldn't have acted like that. Gary & Sam where fishing for Marlin.... I reckon it's a done Deal... just like Judd was... 2 mates back together again with Greg Swann as well.

You got it in one Dee-luded.

Its a lock. The coach he 'feels' for as he said last night is Ratten.

The AFL are aware of this move also already.

  12. KB reported that he ran into a prominent businessman last night at the soccer.

This businessman was also a very influential Dees supporter.

When quizzed by KB, the call was...'we've got too many other good players to worry about, BUT we're all about MTM.....'

When translated the acronym stands for MALTHOUSE TO MELBOURNE.

Interesting....the thought is that Malthouse will generate his own salary by the number of new members he would attract.

    Thoughts?

    Already in discussions with Carlton

  13. Foot Show now.

Malthouse not sounding that convincing at all that he'll be staying at the Pies. Not at all.

From a seriously good source today - Management discussions already underway with Carlton - hence the article last week about Malthouse not feeling to be a solid Magpie. This wasn't a cooincidence.

Ratten was never in the frame for 2012.

  14. True. He's still kicking a couple a week even if he isn't doing much else. He only needs a couple of touches to hurt a side so I'd start him on the ground and leave him there unless he was having a real dog of a day.

I'm off to Norway/Sweden next year too!

  15. Really hope that this doesn't eventuate. Too good a player for it to happen, whether he is in form or not. The Football Department and match comittee would have to be stupid to do such a thing. Have a feeling that Jordie Gysberts might be the sub. Could give Sylvia midfield relief later in the game which could then allow Col to then play as a CHF/FF to kick goals. I guess we'll know Saturday.

Isn't the theory that the sub should be a serious runner who can outrun the tired opposition in the last 1/4 Thats' not LJ.

Also he still neesd seriuous minding and will occupy a good Tiger defender if starting on the ground.

  16. Didn't you know they did that? Very passionate are Richmond supporters. Mind you, their bygone era is stretching out almost as long as ours. No premiership since 1981 and few finals appearances compared with us. Nice Jack Dyer statue outside their club: circa 1945.

For the sake of accuracy its two finals appearances since 1982. I think in 1995?

No wonder they're a bit anxious!

  17. Disagree.

Reiwoldt gets Frawley (Will match him body on body and can exploit him on the rebound)

    Garland gets Vickery

    McKenzie on Cotchin

Martin v Beamer in the middle and if he goes forward then someone like Jones can take him (would love to have seen Bull Tapscott take him however...)

Morton to take Deledio and wear him like a glove. That shuts down most of their play makers then and i will back the rest of our team to destroy them...

I like your thinking! Good plan, but is Beamer a stopper or give him a shot to take on Martin?

  18. Could not sound any less enthusiastic calling Melbourne games and loves to take little snipes at our players (Last quarter when Nicholson kicks the goal to put us 50 points up, he says 'The Dees just love it when a game is like this', .

    Anyone else agree?

There is some truth in this when you remeber back to the John Northey days - if you can.

That was the toughest Melbourne team I remember and the game was never over till the bell. We haven't been like that for some time.

Examples-Round 22 Western Oval 1987, making the 88 GF after the 87 heartbreak, etc.
