Col Sylvia is playing International Rules.
The Chazz replied to Red and Blue Bloke's topic in Melbourne Demons
It's the only time that AFL players will ever get the opportunity to play for their Country. While it is every players desire to win a premiership (which takes a team to do), and openly state that individual awards would be traded for premiership medallions, it is still great to receive some individual recognition for their ability. I appreciate that it's not even the same game as what they are "qualified" to play, but FFS, it obviosuly means a lot to some players, so let them have their moment (and hope they don't suffer any major injuries). -
The talk of Melbourne using 1 compo pick to try and snare the 2nd pick in the mini draft, meaning they would be free to snag Crouch, would be by far a better result than 2 compo picks for O'Meara. This would still give us pick 12 this year, then 2 x 1st rounders next year (one of which would be assigned to Jack Viney). Would also mean that we still have some bargaining power for the rest of trade week this year, as we could potentially use our 2011 Pick 12 (or remaining compo pick) in some sort of deal to land an established player. The big question ios in regards to what established player/s we have already spoken to. According to the media this morning, we have been working on some things for a few months now, and those discussions moved in the right direction yesterday.

Jury's out for me sorry. Just not sure if he will make it to the level everyone on here is expecting him to. That's not saying that I don't think he will make it, I just don't know. I hope I'm wrong, but to say that I am already is totally over-rating the kid.

I'd prefer that combined with a bit of can too!

Did he sing tha tthe other day? All I could hear was a heap of mumble and screaming, with the words "I'll kick your asses" being the only ones you could barely comprehend.
-
They can do that over the next 2 seasons though can't they meaning they could get O'Meara next year, but will have to give off all 4 x 17 year old picks the following year?
-
As long as the Carlton Football Club are in the league, I wouldn't count on that.

The big question I've got is where do the experts think O'Meara would go in the draft next year? Ok, he is certain to go number 1 in the mini draft, but if there was no such beast, and he was in the ND next year, would he be pick number 1?

We aren't the only ones that have first round draft picks to offer, and we aren't in the box seat (Gold Coast having pick 4 + a first round compo pick would be in the best position). On the other hand, chasing a topline player is where we are easily in the box seat as we have plenty of room in our salary cap, as well as those first round picks. There are 17 clubs that would kill to get their hands on either of those 17 year olds - competition will be fierce. We may have 3 or 4 clubs who want Goddard, but I believe we are ahead of them (because of the $$$). A few MFC supporters have MFCSS regarding these 17 year old picks.

I'm going to expand on this B59, as I have been going to write something similar (wow, you and I in agreeance - the planets are ever so slowly aligning!). I want us to have that attitude that we are the hunter. We will not be reactive, we will be proactive. So what if a player (eg. Goddard), has 1 year left on his contract. It wouldn't stop the scum or filth from making contact, so why should it stop us??? We sat back and did minimal about Ross Lyon becuase he was contracted, and I fear that we played a similar role with Malthouse. Yeah, sure, MM said he didn't want to coach in 2012, GLyon was public about how if MM's situation changed, that we would love to chat with him. If we have this $500k card up our sleeve, I'm hoping we don't sit back next week and wait to see who's available. I want us to make someone available. It's just like going for a job - sit back and wait for one to pop up in the paper and you're limiting yourself to where you can work. Get off your ass and visit places you want to work for, and you'll give yourself the best chance of getting the job you want.

HT, you said we might have to give up someone who is on pretty good coin with value. The immediate players I thought fitted this criteria would be Sylvia, Rivers, Davey or Jamar. There aren't too many others on our list that meet your criteria, which is why I made the comment about "similar vintage", as those players listed are just that to Goddard. Frawley aside, I don't think we have a player aged between 22-26 that is getting paid top coin that would play a big role in St Kilda's rebuild without the need for them to bottom-out.

That's assuming Energy* Watch paid market value. I have been eagerly awaiting an announcement of the FoJ sponsor, and the investment they make, especially considering the well publicised deal with EW*. I still think it's a great deal for the MFC, but not an expected deal. But, I can't help but wonder who paid for the big marketing push that came from the announcement, in terms of full page ads in the papers (not sure how much that would cost), adverts on TV with MFC players. Did this come out of the EW* marketing budget, or was it out of the MFC sponsorship package? I don't remember seeing such media advertising from past sponsors (to the point of whole page ads, tv ads, etc). If we can get the big bikkies for the front, then good. That's why Cam Schwab is in the job he is, and I'm in the one I'm in! But I know if we can land a $1.3m sponsor for the front, anything above that is icing. It will be interesting to see the comments made on here about C Schwab if, god forbid, I'm right for a change. Edit: *Changed to Energy Watch for B59's benefit.

There was a 6-8 week period where Rivers should not have been playing seniors let alone moving up the B&F ranks (have to admit, I don't know if he got votes during that period). But, to be fair to Rivers, not many of our players deserved votes in that time. As I said HT, not taking anything away from Murphy's season, but wouldn't you think a $1.80 favourite for the Brownlow, where a professional betting agency were paying out bets before the end of the season, must have had a pretty bloody good season. As it turned out (through the eyes of the umpires), he polled more vites than Murphy. That was my point about someone winning the Brownlow and not winning the B&F, it will forever have questions raised. That's why I prefer to look at a players placing in the B&F over a period of time. I want to see consistent performances year after year. Chip Frawley is well on track of doing this. Col needs to do this.
-
It's always a hard one the B&F. How many times has the person that wont the Brownlow not won their B&F in the same year? It will forever raise eyebrows and have us scratching our heads. I for one can't believe that Judd didn't win the Brownlow (can believe this as the decision is made by idiotic judges), but more surprisingly to me, he didn't win their B&F. Not taking anything away from Murphy, but surely Judd had a better year didn't he? Further to this, I can't see how Jared Rivers made our Top 3 (would've thought Garland was a better defender all year)! While he had a fairly consistent year, so be judged our third best player for the year is mind-blowing. The thing that I prefer to do is rather than judging individual years results, I'd rather look at it over a 5 or 6 year period (or even throughout a players career). If they regularly finish in the Top 5, even if they never win the Bluey, that's the sign of a good player. It's the ones that are Top 3 one year, then 12th the next, then 8th the next, that inconsistency is what's killing us, and it's blokes like Col that are doing it to us. I should give you a pat on the back though - I questioned your post, and you almost got through it without getting personal, and you didn't emoticons. By the end of preseason, I'll have you on "favourite poster" thread. Just call me the "post whisperer"!
-
Sorry B59, you're going to have to explain this one to the uneducated. Obviously I'm reading it wrong when I say in your first paragraph you're hinting that the Bluey is really not a recognised award in the greater football community's eyes, and as you rightly point out, there will always be a winner, just like there will always be someone who comes last in it, and there will always be someone who comes tenth. But, in your next paragraph, your concerned that Col came tenth in our B&F. I wouldn't think B&F position would matter too greatly (if I read your first paragraph correctly). All the bullsh!t aside, and most have said similar on this thread, or any other time they talk about Col. He is inconsistent, should be our best player, needs to pull his finger out and work harder. If he can do this, he can be a season winner for us, at the moment, he's just a match winner but only for a handful of games each year. Not good enough.

I wouldn't be so sure about this part HT. Why would St Kilda trade one of their best players, for someone of a similar vintage? I think for that trade to work, St Kilda would be more looking at the future, and see that having 2 x 1st round draft picks, plus Warnock (I'm suggesting Warnock only because of the talk of them trading Dawson), for a team of St Kilda's age and what they haven't been able to draft over the past few years of finishing up higher, and especially if they continue to get lower down the ladder (which I think they will). I have to ask, what is the better of our compo picks? Hypothetically, if we used it this year, would it be pick 13 (used straight after our first round pick 12)? And if that's it, and we trade it, does that then become the "new owners" pick after their first round pick or is it still based on ours? I know it's been flogged to death, just can't be bothered finding it.

That's why I said Sewell would be hard to convince - like Clarkson, it's just too hard to leave Hawthorn in the state they are in to come to us. Goddard on the other hand, well, we can chuck some cash at him (would be the best player on our list), St Kilda's offield issues are always there, more personnel leaving than coming, fair to say they are on the slide (window shutting rapidly). I'm almost 100% against this method, but could you offer him the captaincy? A lot of things there that could get inside his head and start thinking about. Compare that to Pendlebury next year, again, unless the sh!t hit the fan, why would he leave Collingwood?

Viney, in his first season, will be in our Top 5 midfielders? Wowee, this kid must be good (especially considering in his first year he will be better than Moloney). A lot of people on here see the Bartel comparison - I'm buggered if I do! JT to me is a clone of Luke Hodge. Has shown that agressive side early in their career (Hodge had to be told to settle down by the club IIRC), can go forward and kick goals, or play the sweeper role on half back. I guess that's what Bartel does too, but I just think build-wise, JT and Hodge are very, very similar.

And you couldn't get the smell of the chewy off the cards! Remember the tacky nicknames some of them used to have on them? From memory, our great president in his early years used to have his name as James "Frankin" Stynes. Can't recall if it were James or Jimmy, but I know Franken was "their" nickname. Never remember hearing him called that! Garry Lyon's nickname was Dollars too, but I think that was used a bit around the Club from memory. I have some of the Select gold cards from the 1990's (can't remember what year - maybe 96), with Ben Hart at Adelaide, Wayne Carey at North, and Wanga at Essendon. Their not the most expensive ones going around, but I think they sell for sround $25-$50 on ebay.

Still would love to lure Sewell over, but could be doubtful due to where Hawthorn is placed (I think they will go close to winning the Cup in 2012 at this early stage). Maybe we offer up Pick 12 this year with Warnock. I'm sure a Club that is desperate for a solid defender would consider one of their better players with this deal. Would it be enought to get Sewell? Would go bloody close. Would it be enough to get Goddard? According to Ralph, the top players would demand 2 first-rounders, so it may be short. Would St Kilda get more benefit from one of our compo picks rather than pick 12? Realistically, we have 3 first round draft picks this year OR next year. Next year, if it were a normal year, we'd only have 1 first rounder, and hopefully if we rise up the ladder, might be a pick 8-12. In a normal year, we'd be stoked to get a player like Viney at that number, so are we really gaining anything by hanging on to our 2 compo picks for then? I would consider trading pick 12 and one of our compo picks this year, which will still give us 1 first round pick in this draft. Maybe that might be enough for St Kilda to lose Goddard - pick 12, the 2nd of our compo picks, and Warnock?

In this years post-season Top 50? At the end of last season we had 3 players in the Top 50, and it would've been fair to expect that those same 3 players, plus a couple of extras, would make the same list 12 months on. I appreciate injuries probably cost Frawley a spot, and it could be argued that it cost Jamar a spot too, but it also shows how none of the other players stood up. The amount of Demons in the Top 51-100 list would be interesting. I'd imagine Frawley, Jamar, maybe Garland, Sylvia and possibly Trengove. Some would arue Jordie Mc and Jurrah, me, I'm not so sure. The point is, like the pre-season arguement of last year, we would have bugger all Top 100 players compared to a lot of other sides. That just shows where we are at!
-
The sadest part about it is that it has been 2 seasons I think since HG45, myself and one other poster had a good disagreement about this exact topic - how many Melbourne players are in the Top 50, 100 & 150, and I can't how we have improved our stance much at all. Hopefully, the pre-season Top 50 and the post-season Top 50 over the next couple of years will introduce more Demons, but I think I hopef the same thing 2 years ago. Harsh, but true.

DOF, I wonder what his theory is behind this? Obviously he has an idea in his head, I'm just interested to know what it is (and interested in the Demonland public opinions!).
