  1. Commentary is pretty weak. Not following the game much. Seriously, they are simply not following the game, having a chat with Katie Brennan for the last 15 minutes.
  2. Yep, that'd be the one! Almost every game in Sydney for the first month of that season had a downpour.
  3. Oddly enough, I was actually at the last game that was stopped for lightning, was out at Spotless Stadium in Sydney. There was a bit of a groan at first but then the crowd quickly agreed as they all 'bolted' for cover, under a massive downpour and some very impressive aerial 'match-day experience' features. Good luck to everyone at Casey trying to get cover!
  4. Quick reference point for expectations on the quality of skills; Essendon district league has three divisions, with salary caps of $250k, $200k and $150k. So over those divisions, significantly more cash-for-talent is available at a local club nobody has heard of than for the women's AFL teams. Now, recruit using that salary cap, but also with the condition that you can only recruit players who have never, ever, earned a football salary of any kind before, and most of them have never done a serious preseason with formal coaching or training. By next year, this women's competition will be unrecognisable for the sheer improvement. Even with entirely the same playing lists.
  5. Yeah, the Demon women are carrying on the great club tradition of being dumped to the least commercial and publicity valuable timeslots and opponents. But we'll crush that problem by continuing to be the most active promoters of the game and of our women's team throughout the men's season, and by making the best facilities and coaching support available out of any of the women's teams. When our women's team is winning everything in sight at the same time as our men's team is a regular contender, when we have as many members as clubs who claim to have three times as many 'supporters', and when the likes of Hogan, Gawn and Petracca are all among the most visible players in the game... then we will wreak a terrible vengeance upon all who opposed us... no wait... I mean, then we will get the recognition and profile we deserve.
  6. That does suck. But at least we'll be in the game at the other end of the season.
  7. Women's league off to a good start, Collingwood getting smashed. Tell you what, Daisy Pearce is a pretty good commentator too.
  8. Good with kids too.
  9. Just adding to the chorus - they're idiots. They've gone full DUOA. (Acronym, starts with 'Disappeared')
  10. Melksham, Kennedy, Bugg, Neal-Bullen, Harmes, Wagner, VandenBerg, Trengove. An eight-headed 23rd player, rotating between half-forward, half-back and midfield. Admittedly, I'd guess in any given game 3 of them will make the final team, but it wont be the same three all year, I'd guess. The 2017 Casey midfield could be the stuff of nightmares for opposition VFL coaches.
  11. I'm so excited I even bought a copy of Inside Football, first in a long time. (This edition has a full run-down on every women's team, player by player) Frustrated that I can't get down to Melbourne/Casey for the game, but still hoping I can make it to one this season.
  12. They'd want Mitch King as part of the deal, and I'm not willing to pay overs.
  13. It would be a good bit of fun if we set up some kind of repeat of the Tyson/Salem/Kelly deal. Trouble is, what does GWS really need, at all, let alone what we have to offer that we'd willingly lose? Who knows, maybe they'll imagine Spencer as the successor to the great Simmonds, Jolly and Martin tradition of Demons rucks blossoming at other clubs.
  14. As an All-Australia in both key forward and key defender roles, you'd think he'd be an ideal support for young talls coming through those first few frustrating years of suddenly not being bigger than everyone else. I hope he gets cheerfully involved over time.
  15. Where's Daisy when we need her?
  16. What a horrific thought. Support YOUR BRAND club! Are you a truly dedicated PRODUCT fan!? SHOW YOUR SUPPORT by BUYING! If there is one great thing the salary cap has achieved, it is containing to some extent the need for rampaging commercialisation of a social and cultural activity. Just conversationally, there's yet another extreme which is the baseball and other teams in Japan, which were once explicitly built around the corporate identity of the yakuza... erm, wait, wrong word... zaibatsu! So yep, Mitsubishi would take on Mitsui and Suzuki and Honda, and there were so many people employed by these companies, and the culture of devotion to company was so strong, that there would be some pretty fervent support. Not sure how it is looking these days, though.
  17. For mine, in no particular order - Daisy, Viney, Gawn, Jones, Watts, Jetta.
  18. Pretty sure offseason is out with a shoulder problem.
  19. I wonder if it also helps that he wasn't 'the superstar', which creates a whole different psychological situation. Goodwin was the 'excellent professional', and even when captain he wasn't the eternal symbol of the greatness of the club. Plus, he's not back at his playing club. It's all interesting and does comfortingly point to a meaningful difference in how things will happen for us.
  20. Winning multiple B&F as a midfielder when Mark Ricciuto and Andrew McLeod are running around in the same team for your whole career, that's impressive! I hope Dom Tyson is taking notes.
  21. I wont try to do every team, I think most will be relatively stable, a bit of drifting this way and that. UP! Melbourne. Yep. We all know that. Up a few wins, a few ladder spots, slipping nicely into a home final. Port Adelaide. It clearly all turns on activity between the ears. Rough to predict this mob but the core class is there, and the return of Ryder and Monfries helps their brittle debt. Gold Coast, Fremantle, and Essendon. Not in any exciting way, though. The only way is up... and yes, I've left Brisbane out. DOWN! West Coast. I just don't like them. They're unlikely to drop to dismal lows, since their team is well-selected for Subiaco and they do have a good core. But they are unreliable and annoying. North Melbourne. This time for real. Maybe never to return. They don't actually have the young bold new players coming through that they claimed was their reason for needing to push-out some still high-performing veterans. Even after the purge, there are a lot of older players which the club relies on for success. Waite and Goldstein most obviously. In the short term, they'll slip a bit, but in the long term I expect they'll continually slide for quite some time - the young talent just isn't there, the depth isn't there. Geelong and Hawthorn, I'd expect to slip somewhat. But probably still be in finals. After all, there is an AFL contractual requirement that Geelong, Hawthorn and Sydney are present in every finals series.
  22. 'Doctor Jones' is probably a reference to Indiana Jones, via the awful Aqua song - 'Dr Jones, Jones, calling doctor Jones" repeated ad nauseum.
  23. You're thinking of the Junction Oval. Concussed during a meeting, by a falling possum, maybe?
  24. Just playing Devil's Advocate... but what if Hird was telling the truth, and he really hadn't known about the illegality and scale of the Essendon supplements program, as adminstered by Dank, reporting to Robinson, reporting to Hamilton? What if he had sincerely believed that his admonishments, and request that no further injections be made without Dr Reid's approval, were taken seriously and had established a safe line of reporting? How is it that Hamilton and Corcoran, for example, haven't been drawn and quartered for public entertainment during one of the 'We are Essendon' marches?
  25. Sometimes I just marvel at how they don't all end up with bits of them twisted off, snapped, and hanging from one last sinew. You'd think that all it would take is two players bound up in a wrestle, and another to bump them unintentionally and unexpectedly while going past, and by the time the ground gets involved it is hospital time. But there is some kind of deep human instinct for the 'instant release' at the critical moment. After all, almost all human wrestling and push-shove is between children who are quite close. Keep not breaking eachother, kids!
