I can only assume the 18m goal rectangle (it aint a square) is designed to stop teams pressing up so high and locking the ball in their fwd 50. ie less congestion. Beggars belief they could 'trial' this in 3 intra-club games and make a decision it was OK. The again a Frosty barrel from 18m out could go to CHF.....

That strategy worked well for Port.....

Which bit? "Tom Morris reporting"?

They commented about the umpires not being sucked in but you;re right nothing about Shiels diving...

The guys flopping over Jones, Brayshaw and Lewis got free kicks.......just sayin...

Just got back. Boys looked sharp. Lots of drills around quick ball movement (unsurprisingly), good talking. Crowd of around 400-500. Very upbeat with coffee carts ice cream trucks etc. Everyone looked pumped but not overawed. Just like there was a job to to do. Bernie looked to be training with the mids. Oscar Baker walking laps - has done his hammy again Same spot as last time. Corey Maynard not training. Will be ready to go for the first pre-season session. Maxy training the house down. Trac slotting all his goals (!) Cheers

http://www.melbournefc.com.au/news/2018-09-17/former-player-michael-young-passes-away Aged 59. Too young. Condolances from the Melbourne fans

We had 15 t/o's by foot in the first half. Atrocious. For all the talk of the Hawks missing shots on goal this was the key issue. Should have been 10 goals up at the half.....

Anyone notice Olivers left handed bounce as well in this passage of play? He is a genuine talent -

I used to bang on about this in the lean years. Little things that build the comaraderie. I guess you can't fake it. It's fantastic to see. Oh and another thing I have been waiting a long time to see,. from todays Herald Sun... Collingwood and Melbourne will also cash in on their status as power Melbourne clubs playing exciting football with young and marketable stars. Both can expect a huge boost in Thursday and Friday night football after Melbourne secured only a single Friday night clash this year - an away clash against Port Adelaide.

Casey Demons v Essendon VFL Preliminary Final
jnrmac replied to KC from Casey's topic in Melbourne Demons
I reckon he did. Not huge possessions but his defensive work was good. Bernie, Bugg and JKH played well. Jeffy was OK and Pederson was better than middling. I would leave Tyson out and then choose based on match up. I like the idea of Smith that frees up Fritsch to go to wing or fwd. Don't think we can have Bernie and Lewis on a fast deck... -
Bruce is simply embarrassing. The first rule of a good commentator is that its not about themselves. Its about calling the game properly. We can all see whats going on. Stop being a fawning sychophant. Better still. Times up. Retire now.

Anyone else notice how biased the umpiring was towards Collingwood? I thought it was shocking.

My Melbourne highlights from Semi Final
jnrmac replied to Bobby McKenzie's topic in Melbourne Demons
We have the highest attendance of any finalist on both weekends. Who said the Dees couldn't draw a crowd? -
Only the first 3 games I believe......

Richmond won the flag so that explains their huge increase. West Coast and Geelong moved to new stadiums with increased capacity and GWS is off a low base (and its a complete BS figure as well. 25k members what a joke) St Kilda is probably our best comparison and they were expected to challenge this year....

Cos he is from Adelaide and they speak weirdly over there..

Wow. Have a look at Bruest trying to stop Viney with a kicking motion. That is dangerous and should be outlawed. Has the potential to break legs. I am glad he has the worst two finals in living memory (well maybe not as bad as 'neon Leon'
-
That rule was brought in to stop the Goodes or Lindsay Thomas style sliding into a player front on. That has the potential to break legs or hyper-extend the knee. The way they are paying it is typical AFL over officiating and completely not understanding why the rule was brought in. Worse still is now players wait until someone is on the ground and then flop over them extracting a free. Its total bullshite. Gus was nearly decapitated and gave a free away. FFS that was criminal. They got three of those on the night and were gifted 4 goals from frees. Its simple if you slide into someone front on its a free otherwise play on.

Ray 'doesnt deserve a nickname' Chamberlain.........he does but it wouldn't get past the censors here....
-
That's only 350-400 ppl....and then it would sit on the tarmac for say 10hrs...won't happen

Either that or they only stocked 6 thinking they wouldn't score that many !

Melbourne hasn’t won a premiership since 1964 but starved Demons supporters will be buoyed by an unusual statistic that surfaced this week. An inquisitive Demons supporter asked Twitter stats guru Swamp what the longest streak of improving their win total year on year a team had put together. Melbourne has steadily improved since bottoming out with just two wins in 2013, doubling its total in 2014 before winning seven in 2015, 10 in 2016, 12 while just missing the finals in 2017 and 15 this season. Swamp revealed the six year-run did match the record shared by Geelong (1958-63) and West Coast (2001-06). The icing on the cake? Both those teams won premierships in the sixth year of their streak. Start dreaming big, Dees fans.
