CHANGES: Rd 04 vs Port Adelaide
Someone has to come out for Lever though and Tomlinson is the likely one out. And Petty is back in the VFL this week, so TMac to defence would only be a stop gap anyway.

CHANGES: Rd 04 vs Port Adelaide
I think Jackson as a centre bounce midfielder is definitely worth experimenting with. He is big and quick and hard to tackle and has great hands. If he can use these ingredients to become a clearance midfielder and also be a bit more consistent with his marking, he will finish the season as a top 5 player in the game.

TRAINING: Monday 4th April 2022
Nick Larkey and Tim Membrey would be other comparisons to van Rooyen. I think he could end up as a defender at AFL level like Michael Hurley.

POSTGAME: Rd 03 vs Essendon
We will obviously be better with Lever and Petty back (and Salem), but I don't see turnovers at half forward as an issue. We are always so well set up behind the ball and usually play the boundary line. The whole game plan is about minimising the chance for them to score if we turn it over. The general clearance is also different than the centre bounce because we can set up with an extra behind the ball. Opposition clubs will usually give us this as they can't match Petracca and Oliver. We will often lose clearances badly because we are outnumbered but not suffer on the scoreboard.

POSTGAME: Rd 03 vs Essendon
I watched the replay last night and I think we played pretty well and much better than has been . We were excellent in the first quarter and would have been further in front had we not failed to convert from set shot. The Bombers scoring shots were from lucky wobbly kicks inside 50 or 50m penalties. The second half was a bit more concerning only because of the centre clearance. As much of a weapon the centre clearance was for us in the finals last year, we were not a great over the course of the season last year. I would like us to be a bit more conservative in there. I still think the only way we lose at the moment (when our pressure is high) is if we kick poorly for goal and/or we get badly beaten in the centre clearance. Both these things happened on Friday and we still won by 29 points.

CASEY: Rd 02 vs Essendon
Very good summary. Rosman’s athletic profile is exceptional but he fumbled too much yesterday. I think Chandler was better than has been reported. I don’t think he’s far off the AFL. He is better than Spargo and Bedford in the air and a much longer kick. Daw, Dunstan and Melksham were all underwhelming.

CASEY: Rd 02 vs Essendon
Howes looks clean and he has good pace and size. He runs on top of the ground a bit like Kelly from GWS and Gunston. He needs to find more of the ball but what he does do looks pretty classy.

How did Howes slide that far in the draft? Looks like he will be a star!

I think this day in 1990 was one of the greatest wins in my time.

Max Gawn - Slow start
Max gave away 6 frees against the Bulldogs and mis-timed some of his marks but he was otherwise ok, including his long 55m goal when we really needed it. He dropped a large number of marks against the Suns and looked exhausted in the third quarter on Saturday. Not his best game, but Witts is a tough opponent for him because he is just as tall and heavier than Max. I reckon he has been pinged twice unfairly this year for shepherding when he caught the ball in the ruck on the way down. The adjudication on this rule has been strange in some other games I have watched. I think it is premature to worry because he is covering the ground well and marking form can turnaround quickly.

Great to see they are making all the VFL games on TV or streaming this year.

James Jordon is a Flag Hero!

2022 Injury List
Salem is not really replaceable but I would still back is to win most games and we have some decent depth players. Having Bowey to release pressure and find a free target by foot is such a luxury.

CHANGES: Rd 02 vs Gold Coast
The Lions v Port game was very slippery conditions because of dew. You would expect the conditions to be similar next week.

CHANGES: Rd 02 vs Gold Coast
I am not advocating Kozzie out. That said, he gave away two frees while chasing (down field and in the back). We need him to be more disciplined (i.e. make them hurt as much as possible but stay within the rules). This was a big improvement in his game last year versus 2020 and he needs to be reminded.

CHANGES: Rd 02 vs Gold Coast
Hibberd did not sound super confident that he would be fit for the next game. It is a calf, which he would not want to re-injure. Most likely is just one change, being Lever for Salem. Suggestions to drop Smith are idiotic. His closing speed and spoiling was fantastic. If a Bulldogs player went for a drink after the game, he would have punched that away from the bartender too!

TEAMS: Rd 01 vs Western Bulldogs
I am expecting Brayshaw to play in defence, Jordon on the defensive wing and Harmes as the fourth midfielder. It will be a big game for Jordon to show he can break into the best 22.

TEAMS: Rd 01 vs Western Bulldogs
Smith still has a lot of scope for improvement. He has only ever played half a dozen games in a row. If he can play a full season, he will surprise a few on Demonland. He is one of the most athletic players in the competition and his skills are not as bad as is made out. (Here's hoping my views are the same at 10pm tonight!)

We are 4% off top spot. Could finish top with a big win or drop to third with a loss.

POSTGAME: Community Series vs Carlton
You can't win the flag at this time of year but you can lose it. Looks to me like we have had a good preseason. We have no long-term injuries, zero injuries to key players and we look fit (9 out of 11 last goals). The players who will miss against the Dogs (Petty and Rivers) are replaceable. We have been given a lesson to shut our traps and give the ball back faster. The Blues were pretty impressive IMO. McGovern looked excellent down back. Kennedy played well. Cripps is a star again. Viney looks like he could do with another run but it's a long year and we need to be careful not to over do him. Lever started poorly but got better. Fritsch a similar story.

POSTGAME: Practice Match vs North Melbourne
Super impressive performance by the Dees, even though we were just blowing the cobwebs off. ANB, Brown, Spargo, Hibberd and TMac were particularly good. Oliver is becoming a combination of Judd and Cripps. Petracca was tardy at times but there was no medals to be won yesterday. Gawn was exceptional up forward. Our game style seems to have followed on from the finals last year and we are continuing to move the ball with a bit more aggression inside 50. We have so much depth in every position. Weideman looked great in his cameo. We know what Hunt can do. Smith and Tomlinson are good AFL footballers. Chandler is exciting. Injuries aside, we are in for another great year.

PRACTICE MATCH: vs North Melbourne Streamed LIVE on Kayo
Interesting none of the first year players got selected. How many quarters will they play? Probably only 4 by the look of the squad size.

GAMEDAY: AFLW Rd 07 vs Brisbane Lions
The team looked much better with Bannon partnering Harris inside 50. Bannon's pace means we have pressure when the ball hits the deck and gives us the chance to get goals over the back. Daisy needs to go onto the ball and play a negating role at stoppages and then drop off to play as a quasi loose man behind ball. Her pace is a big problem but she is still valuable because of her skill level. West lacks the skills required for the level.
