  1. ok...sounds like a silly question...but when a contracy say ends in ..say 2007...when exactly in 2007 ?..at waht point does the club have no claim in other words? thanks

End of the season. That is, once the club has played its last game and has had its last training run for the season, that player is out of contract.

  2. The real outcome of this interview should be to get Cam Bruce off the airwaves ASAP. Honestly, I'd rather hear Aaron Davey's nervous but honest stammers than the usual Cam Bruce hyperbole. He, White, Yze and Robertson always spew forth the same old crud when doing interviews. It drives me nuts.

By the way, the current game plan we've been seeing is not run and carry. It's the opposite, stand still and handball off as much as possible to other blokes that are standing still. There's no running or carrying, how could be called run and carry?

  3. The current poll result surprises me. I voted PJ.

Jamar has had more than ample opportunity to develop his game and demonstrate his worth, and apart from 'decent' tap work, his work around the ground has been particularly disappointing. His work up forward hasn't impressed me to date, and I prefer the natural skill of PJ over Jamar's any day. To me, PJ works harder and has more room to improve. His tap work is improving and with more work will be equal to Jamar's by the end of the year. IMO.

It'll be interesting debate come the end of the year.

You do realise this is a thread from this time last year right?

Jamar's really struggling right now. Has not come on in the way I had hoped, where as at this point, PJ is developing better than I thought he would. Can I revote? :D

Edit: Sorry about the thread closure, seems you can't close the poll without closing the topic. Topic (and poll) reopened!

  4. If I change it to 85% would that make you happier?

You're still implying that he's predominantly a receiver when in actual fact the stats show he's our best ball winner. Are Jones and McDonald receivers too? (or is that McDonland, you've said that twice now :D)

As for the skills and smarts you talk about, I haven't seen a lot of that from Bruce for quite a while. His disposal is about equal to that of McDonland at the moment, and he makes a lot of iffy decisions.

I believe Fan's talking smarts and skills in winning the ball. Using it is another matter entirely.

  5. Being a receiver is hardly a crime, and that is the point.

It doesn't detract from your value as a player, but it does mean that you need to have support around you to be successful.

No, the point is that Bruce isn't just a receiver as you imply. You don't have to continually put yourself at the bottom of the stacks-on pack ala Jones, McDonald or McLean to be a ball winner. Bruce will happily run in to a large group of people and come out with the ball, but people don't notice, either because they have a preconceived idea about Bruce, or the fact that he does so without any fanfare such as knocking blokes over.

Compare that to someone like Yze (or Hards :D) who will almost invariably be found at the outside of the pack, or running past going "gimme".

  6. Yep. West Coast drafted Tim Watson at one stage, who did not go over. West Coast also drafted a young lad from Tassie by the the name of Gavin Cooney who did not go, but went on to be one of the state's best players at the top level down here. He would have easily made it in the AFL had he gone.

Former Tasmanian Sheffield Shield/Pura Cup batsman Jamie Cox was also drafted by Essendon in the late 80s but elected to persue his cricket career instead.

That's my trivia for the day.

I remember a few years ago when a boy from Perth (Clancy Rudeforth?) wrote to all the clubs outside WA telling them that if they drafted him, he would not go. I believe they changed the rules after that.

  7. all i know is he was drafted by them in 1994 and then traded to richmond in in 1995...he went at about pick 14, then went to richmond for picks 16? and 32 i think. before coming to us for 20.

thats some very high draft picks there fore dutchy over the years.

They took him with pick 19 according to Wikipedia.

  8. Technically correct, but he never stepped inside the door of the club!

Any idea why? I seem to remember they took him fairly early in the draft, but I wasn't aware that he never actually went to the club.

  9. for the first three quarters in which he instructed his players to handball at all costs.

Woah, let's back up a little here. Were you present during Neale's addresses to his players? How can you say that he instructed his players to handball at all costs as if it were 100% certain fact?

  10. The problem with only having 3 words to play with is that you can't tell anywhere near the full story.

Jones -- yeah he was great but his game wasn't perfect. His kicking at times is not great, and if he's going to take so many shots on goal from 50 he needs to drill more of them. A weak criticism I know, but it's warrented and something you can't hope to say in 3 words.

Ditto with Brock. Showed his importance, sure. But he also showed why you usually bring players back through the VFL when you have that luxury. He showed glimpses of his best at times, but also at times looked to be horribly out of touch with the pace of the game. It was definitely a "blow off the cobwebs" game for him IMO.

  11. PJ did all the right things today. His mark in the goal square was great -- right place, right time. He got a head full of steam and fluffed the goal chance though. I hope he learns.

By the way, who knew Jeff White had the league's highest possession count for any ruckmen in the league this year?

  12. For a guy in just his second year, he is really impressing me.

I trust his disposal will improve to really cap his game off.

Absolutely agree. Even if he peaks early he'll be an A grade midfielder.

If he starts kicking those goals that he missed today he'll be the complete package.

  13. He is unknown up forward, which in my opinion is his natural position.

Is he up to it, I say yes, but we've seen so little of him that we don't have much to go on apart from his pre-season form which was excellent. One thing I am sure of, is that he is more up to it than Bizzell, especially in the long term. When you are 0-8, you look for the win, but in the back of your mind there has to be some sort of consideration for the future.

    Nice save. :)

I don't agree with the selection of Bizzell, however I have my doubts about CJ as well. I wonder if he's out of the side because of his failure to go in hard enough. His banishment to Sandy may be to teach him a lesson. Just a thought.

  14. Bizzell has shown us what he can do for quite a number of season now, CJ is still largely unknown

Bizzell is couragous, so is Ferguson. Neither are up to it though, CJ IS.

So is CJ up to it or is he unknown? He can't be both; you've contradicted yourself. At this point I'm thinking CJ i'm beginning to think he's neither anyway.

BTW David Gallagher also dominates regularly at VFL level, and wasn't his AFL career a sterling one.
