Really like Cooper Hynes. If we can get another late first rounder like 18 from Brisbane, then drafting Draper/Lalor and Hynes would be such a good midfield combo to build our future around. Speed, skill, contest.

2024 AFL National Draft prospects: The next batch
Lord Travis replied to Whispering_Jack's topic in Melbourne Demons
I assumed Draper would get taken pick 3 or 4 and not be available at our pick. If he makes it through to us and doesn't seem a homesick type, then we have to take him. His agility and speed out of contests is brilliant, and his foot skills are great too. He'll be an elite midfielder. We're in a great position where we could land one of Draper, Langford or Lalor to build our future midfield around. -
If we had been a decent team this year and our first round pick was in the teens as expected, it would've been a fair price to pay for him at trade. When we turned to rubbish and finished with pick 5, he ceased to be an option. Even if he nominated us now, I wouldn't do the trade as pick 5 will be an elite midfielder who plays over a decade for us.

So it's a yes now then? 😆 As a delisted free agent, he's a free hit at low salary. Improved depth at worst.
-
Agreed. Parfitt is no superstar, but he's solid AFL depth or midfield depth. He's only 26, so not a 30 year old at the end like Hunter, Billings, Dunstan etc. Statistically he's very similar to Neal-Bullen, but slightly better across their careers. Neal-Bullen is a stronger runner, but Parfitt wins more ball and lays more tackles. Infact, on average he lays more tackles than any of our current list except Jack Viney, so even as a defensive mid or half forward option he's an upgrade on our current list. As a free agent, he costs us nothing at trade. He'd be improved depth at worst and IMO a better option than some others such as Hunter, Laurie, Billings. It seems a no-brainer to take him for free on 1-2 year contract for free.
-
Not worth 5 years. He's a decent player, but reality is he's a second tier midfielder. You don't give long contracts, big dollars, or high draft picks at trade for him. Good we had a crack, but not worth what he's getting. Fair play to him milking the $$$ when he's overvalued.

No, even if it's pick 18. Second rounder is his value. He's a similar commodity to Langdon was at trade IMO (pick in the mid 20s).
-
Is Callaghan wanting to come to Vic? If he's an option to extract from GWS, then we should throw the kitchen sink at him. He was previously a top 5 pick and has shown he was worth it, developing well in a stacked midfield. We should throw pick 5 without a second thought and potentially sweeteners on top. He's already a very good line breaking midfielder inside and outside particularly. He will be a star in future and only 21 years old.

Way overs. A mature age mid-season draftee who hasn't played a single game at AFL level is in no way worth pick 25 in a trade. Trading second round picks is for established AFL players such as Langdon, Hibberd, Melksham, and Grundy for us in recent years. The average AFL salary is $450k. Why would you give a mature age mid-season draftee $400-$450k? He'd be paid more than talented kids and established players, including some premiership players. It would be poor salary cap management. Realistically, we offer our last pick - pick 61 - and lowest possible salary. He doesn't command anything more. All our other picks are too valuable to waste on him, even the picks in the 40s and 50s hold enough points that they'll likely be part of a package to trade up the board with Brisbane, Gold Coast, and others that needs points for academy and father sons draftees.

A mature age mid-season draftee who has two years in the system and never played an AFL game. Probability says he's not gonna make it, so he'll likely become depth if acquired. Can't be anything more than a late pick swap at trade for such a lowly valued commodity.

Thanks for sharing. Incredible insight provided there on Trade Radio... Another 4 weeks of this dribble! Is Damien Barrett just a poorly configured AI bot?

Reportedly requesting trade to the Saints.

Coates Talent League 2024
Lord Travis replied to Whispering_Jack's topic in Trade, Draft & Free Agency
Yeah Ashcroft looks the goods. Not possible for us and weighing up the other options is interesting, and we need to take a gun midfielder at 5 to build our next premiership midfield around. Gun mids win flags. Whoever we take will be part of the next wave to replace Trac and Clarry long term. We need another Trac/Gus/Clarry type elite midfield haul for the future. We already got Windsor as part of that, now need an inside bull next to him. Langford seems destined to be a gun big bodied mid who can clunk marks and hit the scoreboard. He's probably the one that will be available at our pick who seems best IMO. Lalor the other main potential, but he's injured again so won't see him again now. He's also had injury troubles the past 12 months, so unsure if there's anything in that from a durability or work ethic point of view. -
Rising quickly and might go late first round. He's got good intensity for a small forward and would pair nicely with Kozzie. Would love to land him alongside a gun mid at 5. Small forwards can have such a big impact on both scoreboard and defensive pressure. Modern game style is all about speed and they're the role that capitalists on it the most. The last few finals series have shown good small forwards are probably the most influential position on the ground.

Coates Talent League 2024
Lord Travis replied to Whispering_Jack's topic in Trade, Draft & Free Agency
Will be interesting to see how Langford and Hynes go against Ashcroft and Reed. -
I agree they're both great young players full of potential, but not sure how those Ins work in the real world. Ward was pick 7 in 2021 and is now starting to flourish at an up and coming Hawks. He's contracted for next year. Humphries was pick 6 in 2022 and signed a contract extension to be locked away until end of 2028. He's shown he will be a star in time as he builds his fitness to play midfield for more minutes. Both are pillars of their clubs future midfields. They would both command a first round pick for a trade if their clubs let them go. Where do we get the capital to trade for either of them without giving up our pick 5?
-
One of the most talented juniors in recent memory. He never put it together through a combination of poor work ethic and injuries, similar to Harley Bennell though less troubled. If he had the determination he could've been a star of the game, but alas he's now 30 and on the scrap heap returning home to WA.

4 weeks. Woe was concussed. Was a seriously dog hit and sums up Ladhams attitude on and off the field. He was suspended and unavailable for their finals campaign as a result when they needed a ruckman. He lets his team down time and time again. If he wasn't tall he'd be in the queue for Centrelink.
-
We tried to get him not long ago and he instead signed a new contract with Port. A shame, as he has potential as an athletic forward option.
-
Ladhams is a spud. His nickname is peanut because he's an [censored] and a [censored]. Swans literally had no other fit ruckman this time last year and he went and got himself suspended (again) when they needed him. He's up there as the worst ruckman on an AFL list. Shown nothing at AFL level other than being taller than most. This hit on young Woe in the VFL is reason enough for us not to consider him. Gutless sniper. https://www.afl.com.au/video/832484/big-swans-crude-hit-leaves-young-demon-dazed?videoId=832484&modal=true&type=video&publishFrom=1661749857001 Yes we need a ruckman, but we'd be better with with basically any random battler from the VFL who actually wants a chance to prove themselves. Avoid Ladhams at all costs.
-
No apologies here. My point about the midfield remains and I'll ask you to put down the bottle before posting. Gawn is on the decline. He has 3 years left on contract and will then retire. He's still a great player, but his influence is diminishing as other rucks rise and the game changes. I'd wager TDK, Xerri, Jackson and other athletic rucks pass him next year. Trac staying for now is good. We'll need him because we're bottom four without him. My point still stands about our midfield. It's the biggest issue with our list. 3 years on from a premiership and it's in tatters. You'd expect we'd have had pull to be a desirable location to play, yet no one of worth has come to the club since and we've lost many. Our midfield needs a significant uplift for us to return to finals.

Limited viewing but I feel the same. Langford on the other hand at 190cm seems a natural big bodied ball winning mid who has foot skills to go with the clearance work. He hits the scoreboard too so looks a genuine mid-forward type.
-
Should've just drafted him in the first place. Him and Anderson were always going to wind up the best players from that draft.
-
Looks a great talent. Not sure if I'd prefer him over Langford, but he's clearly got the attributes to succeed as an AFL player. 194cms is a big mid, Cripps size. He looks to link well and be a good kick. I didn't watch any carnival, but curious he didn't perform well or make the underage All Aus team. Langford on the other hand won the Larke medal as best player, made the All Aus team, and at 190cms is a big midfielder too. He appears to have good drive and skills too. We likely won't have the choose anyway and just take whoever is left at pick 5, but if we did have to choose I'd trust JT to make the right call.

Roffey should have spoken to Petracca. This is a marque player who is destabilising the club she leads. Why would you, as leader, not reach out and try to mend the relationship or negotiate? Poor leadership. If she has spoken to him, but wanted to keep details private, then state that instead of lying and looking incompetent and feeling the negative narrative. Poor leadership. Seems we need new leadership at the top. I hope we see those meaningful changes over the off-season.
