The 2014 AFL National Draft
ahhh ahhh a man after my own thinking how is it , or indeed we ought to ask WHY is it possible that clubs who dont particularly feature often at draft time still manage to eek out and snaffle decent players ? I reckon its because they have the criteria for selection right as opposed to our litany of fukk ups !! i think our biggest mistake is to go after the salvation messiah types when what we really need are footballers. I think the current FD understand this...tgft !!

The 2014 AFL National Draft
Not a lot of point bringing in too many kids if you dobt have a reasonably able and 'cultured' middle order of the list. This is where we lack at the Dees and I fully expect Roos to do what the Swannies did for a long time. Rely less on the draft but go about recruitment via other clubs. Roos is on record as not being a slave to drafts. Why does anyone think he'll suddenly change. Theres still the next draft and the next one etc to pick a few kids from. We need to get going like yesterday .

I disagree rjay. It presumes there are no decent kids up to say pick 25. This is a flat draft by many accounts. Im in building and we would concern ourselves more with getting the house fixed up and right before worrying about extensions etc. If you want the likes of Hogan Salem Mac to stick around get them some good workmanlike team mates. Edit. I will agree that weve made some "wrong" picks and that hasnt helped. Just about every one was considered ELITE..I think

The 2014 AFL National Draft
Jack this to me is the error of many a thinking both now and the last 10 years. This myth of needing elite. We struggle to put a decent AFL std team on the park because we dont have enough good meat and potatoes let alone any fillet mignon..Kids wont impact a team tomorrow and thats been our folly. Roos will endeavour to ensure kids spend more time learning their craft not less. Any reliance on kids, no matter how elite , will be less. I hope Roos uses both high picks to bring in some good 'decent' players who WILL lift this club quickly. We will still get some fairly lively picks. History suggests theres as much chance anywhere up to 50...and even then some gems appear late. Lets worry less about the cream and more about whats beneath.

The 2014 AFL National Draft
if we , just for a moment , put names to the side and just go with intent then I can see many here also think its either a)desirable b) probable that picks will be traded. If we do get the bonus prize ( compo ) and if it is band 1 I still maintain theres a greater benefit this year to re-invent those picks as players able to impact immediately and accompanied by some still handy picks to garner some development youth. We are different from many teams. We arent looking to top up and continue along a well established path we're doing some emergency re-engineering on the fly ....the foundations need fixing and the roof is leaking and the floor's a bit wonky etc All things equal next year we'll still have a decent 1st and 2nd round pick. Right now we need rtr players thats my take
