You're nearly there D167. We haven't actually won ANYTHING. Weve been decent. Our VFL players have found their ceilings. Those ceilings for a very few got them gigs at AFL with varying success. Yes those doing well at AFL (teams) have depth and that extends into their VFL lineups. Those with REAL depth tend to over-run those without. Port an excellent example of competing well at VFL but they would provide little depth to an AFL team as most play well at that level but would struggle stepping up. We have a VFL team that FAILS to get the choccies. Again very good at that level but in reality providing little assistance to MELBOURNE. We have poor depth. Those teams you refer to D167 have players bashing down doors and then replicating form into the firsts . Thats depth. We have a merry go round of nqrs getting games in the hope someone clicks. Most have been shown inadequate. You think we have depth ? You're welcome to your view. Its not mine.

I think the greatest error may be to equate having a good/decent VFL as having depth.

I found over time ive become more and more conflicted about this bloke. Have to love and respect all the pros. Am not convinced (still) as to certain areas. The undisputed is; i wish all the team would TRY like he does. Not always the result...but always the effort.

How exactly are Depth and Quality separate? One is a component of the other. The very idea of not having enough depth stems from not having enough quality players. Maturity and experience are other factors but even as a noob Clarry and even the likes of Viney showed more quality than many with 50-80 games more than them. We have depth problems because we DONT have enough decent players. Simple as that. Many of the projects and kids arent displaying the right stuff. Hence..lack of depth

and this is where the formula is inherently wrong...the players get umbrage at what...?? They want to be the tail wagging the dog ( club ) Players are widgets. The club is what its REALLY about. Whilst somewhat kneejerk I dont mind the general sentiments uttered here. Its about premierships...not just being OK Melbourne aspires to "OK" doesnt always even get there ffs

How many did they have out ?? Ffs At their best a mid road plonker. They were underdone and undermanned and rag dolled us for 30 mins then totedwith us. I have no illusions here

And showed we could fold like shlt. Mate, don't kid yourself. We weren't far off full strength..played a very undermanned Filth and got molested. Im personally glad we didn't sneak into finals falling over the line. We couldn't sustain intensity in H/A. Finals as shown are when the able have a meal of the pretenders I have no joy from this season,let alone watching Ess get mauled...but it'll do.

Think wed fair any better than our last meeting...and on their turf ?

Not to put a dampener on our enjoyment but just keep in mind, had we fallen across the line that would be us being put to the sword...better believe it....just saying.

I concur. Of the starting 22 any given week maybe 15 / 16 are genuine starters with the rest having earnt the opportunity. There maybe about a dozen beyond that core 16 who youd rightly suggest a bone fide afl level...just some better than others at various times. That and injury affords some a game or two or three. The rest are either noobs or development projects and some simply tried/ failed or past it. I dont see a great degree of real depth. Thats my opinion.
