The passage of play taking the ball from the back line involving Barassi, Bourke and Mann (l have forgotten someone) is the best sequence of football - preserved on video - from the Demons' golden era. PS Did you ask Hassa why he shanked that shot on goal?

Barassi to Townsend to Bourke to Mann...

I was fortunate to attend the 2014 50th anniversary premiership lunch at the Bentleigh club. Having been at the 1964 grand final it was a delight to meet the players again.

Hassa was one of the 14 (out of 20) players who were there and I got all their autographs. It was a joy to be there and Hassa was, as always, wonderful.

After kicking the winning goal at the old Glenferrie Oval in 1964 to guarantee us first place on the ladder for the finals, how could he be anthing else.

    GO DEES. GO HASSA BABY.

Yeah, mine were Tassie as well as Townsend and Stan Alves, and then along came Greg Parke, Max Walker, Greg Wells and Gary Hardeman; all favourites of mine from that post premiership era. I have a vague memory of Hardeman being knocked out early in a final (can’t recall who the culprit was), something that pretty much knocked us out of the running.

Don't think Gary Hardeman ever played in a final...

One of our greats. The North footage would seem to be from 1967 where we won by 3 points at the ‘G, with Peter Smth running around in the #4 jumper previously made famous by his father - the coach that day.

The Collingwood one would be from 1968 at Victoria Park, again where we won. Greg Parke visible in the footage in his first season - kicked 4 straight.

At 1.27 the Geelong player who attempts to kill him with a head high is good old Sam Newman.

I'm pretty sure in that North game that Mann swooped in out of nowhere and kicked the winning goal...

Many moons ago, I was in the Yarra Glen area, trying unsuccessfully to find my way to Dixons Creek.

I stopped at a general store for directions and who should I see lining up to buy his lunch but Brian Dixon.

Surely he'd know where Dixons Creek was!

Naturally enough, I asked him for a little help.  He seemed most annoyed at my intrusion and begrudgingly pointed me in the right direction.

Just for the record, his lunch order was two pasties and a vanilla milkshake.

I once saw Tim Watson ordering a pie from Longwarry service station.

Hassa, when he worked for I think Mobil was often at my father’s business and got me all the team autographs which is a treasured keepsake. I was also taught by Mrs. Mann in primary school. A true demon hero.

Speaking of Mobil, his 1964 card was one of my cherished memories!

Given that there were only two matches covered each week - monopolised by the top teams - l am guessing some of these games at least were match of the round and therefore during MFCs better years of the 60s...

"Melbourne doing it easy" at 0.26... later on "and another goal by Melbourne"...  "Kerry Ryan" anyone?

Can anyone ascertain if this footage is from his post-12th-premiership period? The mid-60s seem to have been a bit of a watershed, from the earlier 'get-and-kick' style, to a more skilful, varied one, as demonstrated by H.

There is a vast difference from putting your knee into someone and putting your knee on someone, a la for a ride and timing is everything too presumably to achieve both.

When I was just starting, I used to look at Jesaulenko's marks all the time.

If you look at "Rhetrospective" on YouTube, there are instances of players being penalised for kneeing an opponent in the back. And this was in the biffo era of the 60s. It seems the afl administrators are bent on preserving certain forms of violence to keep up with the other thuggish codes.

The use of the knee to inflict damage is probably one of the few acts that goes unpunished (mostly, or nearly all of the time)

At suburban level back in the day, the use of the knee as a weapon was quite rampant

Do people here remember when Hogan suffered vertebrae damage in a practice match against Geelong before he had played a senior AFL game?

Can't remember which Geelong player inflicted the damage to Hogan but it might have even been 2 Geelong players (Hogan was playing in front)

Missed the whole of the 2014 season (which was meant to be his debut season)

I was watching some Rhettrospective on YouTube(inc. games from the 1960s) and it is interesting to note how umpires protected the ball-carrier, and a player's back couldn't be rammed and targeted, as is now commonplace.
