Its for a side for the 2009 season, perhaps many voters were looking to the future? As McDonald struggled to make the side, but also got in as an emergency, and Wheatley missed out altogether. Voters obviously had been impressed with Valenti of late..........

Wheatley was put up for a nomination against other midfielders and centre line players - he wasn't considered in the defender catergory as more posters considered him more of a midfielder- winger than defender. The votes simply didn't stack up for him in his favour. Out of 77 voters, Paul Wheatley only received 7 votes when people voted their preferred best 6 midfielders.

The voters simply voted for him............which earned him a place ahead of a few seasoned campaigners....notably Wheatley.

Sums it up perfectly. On the flipside, if Newton had more of Miller's work rate and urgency and physicality............then that would be something.

Blue-collar class footballer. Very Handy, good work ethic. Was there the day he got goal of the year against Port Adelaide. That was a turning point for him.
