To suggest that recruiters are often wary of indigenous talent is spot on and isn't "naive stereotyping" by supporters. To suggest otherwise is naive. To call jurrah's obvious talents "great tricks" shows a complete lack of understanding of football ability and I'm surprised you labelled his obvious skill as tricks. His kicking is sublime, he has a great mark, is quick, can pinpoint a handball and tackles like a demon. hardly tricks. had he played TAC football and developed this talent and his body sooner I'd be very surprised if he made it to the 3rd round. Rioli was pick 12. I think you should watch him play again before judging him so poorly.

Totally agree but my point is that as a club Collingwood can't do without their odler players if they are to challenge. We however. at our stage of development don't rely on the older guys, most of whom will be gone at years end anyway, making us far younger than Collingwood
-
We are rebuilding and players such as Whelan, Robertson, JMac and even Bruce are no longer are best players and we won't need them when we are again challenging, thus we don't rely on them.
-
That's fine . I'd be interested to hear of your take on each of these players
-
That's a play on numbers. Take Robertson for Martin and Whelan for Bennel and then we are 5 years younger. It's that simple. Not to mention we don't rely on any of our older players which they do (Didak, Lockyer, Fraser and co) We also haven't seen Strauss for JMac, Blease for Bruce. Jurrah or Spencer for Johnson. We are plenty young enough and it's just Mick being his usual crafty self.

Moloney will be superseded by Jones and Mclean I fear is finished at this level.
-
A midfield of Blease, Strauss, Grimes, Jones, Mckenzie and Scully will be competitive. If there was another gun midfielder available it would be tempting. I think Scully and Butcher would be favourites so far but only time will tell. For the record I don't think Mclean and Moloney will be the answer.

Sorry to rain on your parade but Jetta- as yet not ready for AFL Robbo - gone. Another totally unacceptable effort on Monday. Jurrah - several weeks away, exciting prospect but don't expect much from him Watts - see above Davey - playing elsewhere and having his best season so he's not playing HF. Miller - great efforts but little or no scoreboard pressurs.

As an under performing senior player I'd take him out of the team for a couple of weeks with a knee strain. We need to look at the kids who want his spot so give him a rest and let him play out the last 7 or 8 games and then retire. I for one will thank him for being a tireless servant of the club and a fine captain.

B: Rivers Warnock Garland HB: Strauss Martin Frawley C: Morton Grimes Davey HF: Jurrah Butcher Sylvia F: Miller Watts Blease R: Spencer Jones Scully INT: Maric, Bennell, Petterd, Bate EMG: Wonaeamirri, Jamar, Mckenzie, Moloney Good post and gave me reason to once again right down our squad in position. If, and of course it's a decent sized if, these players reach their "perceived" potential then I believe we have a team capable of pushing for a flag. I know I've included Scully and Butcher but I can't see us winning more than 4 games. During the rest of the season we're going to see more and more experimentation. Like Morton in the back half, Martin playing forward, Youngsters like Strauss, Jurrah, Mckenzie, Valenti, Newton, Bail. McNamara, Buckley are all going to get some game time leaving us open to the odd belting but offering us and the coaches a glimpse of what might be. Is our core good enough. Let's look at it and in doing so I've included "potential" because at the moment I think we have to. Davey Frawley Garland Grimes Morton Watts Sylvia (On current form he belongs in our core) You would hope that our draft picks from this year might also get into this list. But you can't deny it's a fairly impressive list of young talent. Of course this whole exercise relies on "potential" but that's where we are at. I am remaining confident that as a club all the right boxes are being ticked. My biggest query lies with the general, intangible qualities of this club. I'm not sure that we're upto it here. Our confidence is at a very low ebb and even with the right team installing "belief" into the club as a whole might be Dean Bailey's biggest hurdle. I hope it's not insurmountable.

Calm down Gill. It's one bad game after a string of good games. Forget Neitz, he's gone and his last 2 years were very ordinary. McDonald was given the captaincy for 1 year because we have NO ONE else on the list who is captain material. As for Sheedy coaching us. I'll tell you what would have happened if that blunder had been made. He would of retained all our ageing tired players for one last crack at a finals series. We would of watched on in horror as Yze, White, Godfrey, Ward, Bizzell and co all ran around whilst no youngsters were blooded. We would of missed the finals and we'd be 2 years further behind in our rebuild. We'd also be stuck with trying to rebuild with a comprimised draft. As for Gary Lyon, he doesn't want to coach so why would we want him to coach? Todd Viney went back to Adelaide for family reasons. The future is bright. Our team is young and improving and with some more astute drafting we'll be well on the way. Have a look at the team below and give them 2 to 4 years to find their feet. B: Rivers Warnock Garland HB: Strauss Martin Frawley C: Morton Grimes Davey HF: Jurrah Butcher Sylvia F: Miller Watts Blease R: Spencer Jones Scully INT: Maric, Bennell, Petterd, Bate EMG: Wonaeamirri, Jamar, Mckenzie, Moloney Now Gill have a look. See it's going to be OK, Patience!!

Sadly their capacity is now so low that retaining them on our list is pointless. Thanks for the memories.

OUT: Robertson(retired), Bell, Johnson, Whelan IN: Miller, Newton (just so he can finally prove to everyone that he's not upto it), Martin, Bennell

Couldn't agree more. The problem lies with our 5 or 6 most senior players. I say move them all on, I've had enough of them.
-
Paul Johson is not worth keeping, simple. If any of you seriously think we can win a premeirship with him in the team you are delusional. And yes I am [censored], and yes it's because I watched us take a big step backward today against Collingwood.
-
Oh and I forgot, it may well be time to, dare I say it, trade Brock!
-
Robertson Bell Whelan McDonald Johnson Bruce (I'm done, I've stuck by him, mainly because of YzeMagic, but now I'm done) Wheatley Anyone who thinks the club will have trouble delisting 6 or 7 players at season's end just had their eyes opened.

When I saw the title of the thread I knew you'd be spouting your dribble. I'll tell you what let us down today and it wasn't the coach. Our forward line is led by Junk time Robertson who should be shelved immediatly for bringing the club into disrepute. After that we have no forward line. Our supposed leaders in JMac and Bruce are pale shadows of their now distant best. Our midfield was made to look one paced (slow) and we don't have an AFL standard ruckman. That doesn't leave all that much for a coach. On the plus side I thought Grimes continued his impressive development. Sylvia is finally performing at the level he is capable of on a regular basis. Davey continues to have his best year. I think Bate, Warnock, Cheney, even Maric all showed enough for me to remain hopeful. We massively overhyped the game which gave Collingwood all the ammunition they needed to hit us hard, which they did. To right off the coach is absurd to a level thankfully only seen by a few posters on this sight, led ably by our man Mo. Now lets move on to Tom Sc.......

You'd presume that if his form holds he's about 3 or 4 weeks away, but who knows. I'm very keen to see him at the G

When I say had Jurrah come through the "normal" channels I mean had he been playing in the Under 18 comp for several years and had all that extra training and coaching he would be a top 5 pick.
-
Having seen Liam play on Saturday I thought he deserved his own thread. I waited but noone started one so here goes. Of all the players on Melbourne's list Liam provides me with the most excitement. We all know Watts will be good and the likes of Grimes, Morton, Maric, Garland and co will provide us with many highlights over the years. But none of them has what Jurrah has and that is the ability to turn football into an artform. If this kid had come through the "normal" channels to the draft he'd of been a Top 5 pick. I mean name a weakness that is apparent at the moment. His kicking action is, well dare I say it, Perfect. He can take a beautiful mark, he's pretty quick, tackles superbly, notice the way he pulls players to the ground so effortlessly. On top of that he reads the play well and his handballs are pinpoint. Given a few preseasons and some more conditioning he could be anything. Now thats exciting.
